Ryan Dohrn explains why salespeople should reply to emails promptly but not instantly. Responding immediately can make you look subservient and damage the peer relationship with prospects. A slight delay lets you stay in control of your priorities while still delivering good service.

Hey friends, Ryan Dohrn here, your Global Sales Coach. Hey, hope you're having a good week out there in sales land. I just got a contract in myself, so I'm having a good day and really happy about that. You need to ask yourself this question: if you're going to get stuff done, what controls you? Does your inbox control you, or do your priorities control you? I'm going to bet a lot of you are saying, hey, it's my inbox. Okay, so I want to give you a little bit of tip— a tip here. Is it instantaneous or prompt? Which is better in business, instantaneous or prompt when it comes to email? I think prompt is very acceptable. Instantaneous is what's caused— that's what causes a lot of problems. So when an email comes into me, I want to be prompt, but I'm never instantaneous. And I'll tell you why, because I want to be a peer to the people that I'm selling to. I don't want to be subservient to them. I don't want to be working for them, so to speak. I wanna be a peer to them. So when I instantaneously respond, it's not necessarily good customer service because a prompt reply is also good customer service. An instantaneous response in my world, in my little opinion, is, okay, you've jumped and I'm gonna say, they say jump and I'm gonna say how high? I don't think that that's a great way to set up a relationship with one of my clients. I wanna offer great customer service. I wanna be prompt in my email replies, but I'm typically not instantaneous. And so far so good. Nobody has accused me of bad customer service. That little shift from responding instantaneously to being prompt is a shift that can change a lot in your sales life in terms of how you handle the email that's inbound. Friends, never forget, I mean, if sales was easy, everybody'd be doing it, and they're not. We're not crazy. This is a great career, but not everybody's doing it. We are the chosen few. We found a career that'll feed our families for a lifetime. Hey, love to come to speak at your national sales meeting or something like that. Reach out to me over at ryandohrn.com. All right, friends, we'll see you next week.
