Keith Rabois argues companies waste talent by demanding perfect resumes. He says hiring managers need to practice evaluating less-proven candidates and that giving underproven people real opportunities to succeed beats waiting for the mythical all-star who checks every box.
Just can't do it because everybody's going at one. So I think you have to go after people that are less proven, and you have to get really good at evaluating those kind of people. And the only way to do that is just practice. You've got to get, like, figure out how to assess people and give them the opportunity to succeed. So, for example, everybody says they want the classic vpe. Every board meeting, you sacrifice a little bit of that for more. Both minds tackling a problem simultaneously. Because they always say, like, I want 10 years of experience, proven ability to do this, proven. And you're like, it's like baseball saying, I want a third baseman who bats 300 hits, 40 home runs, 100 RBIs and wins a Gold Glove.
