Ayurvedic Health Reset: The Power of Triphala to Reverse Burnout and Restore Gut Health in 21 Days
26 Dec 2025 · 24 min
In this episode of the Actionable Ayurveda podcast, Salima Sukumaran addresses the pervasive feeling of burnout and loss of self‑recognition among high‑achieving women. She opens with a personal anecdote about a client questioning Botox, then situates the problem within a broader cultural narrative of women sacrificing vitality for external success. Salima introduces Triphala – a traditional Ayurvedic rasayana composed of three fruits (amlaki, bibhitaki, haritaki) – and explains its historical use by ancient Indian queens, its tridoshic balancing properties, and emerging scientific evidence of microbiome modulation, antioxidant activity, and gene expression effects. She then presents her proprietary five‑step, 21‑day protocol designed to restore energy, skin health, digestion, and emotional resilience: (1) Executive Evening Reset – a Triphala‑honey night drink; (2) Metabolic Reset – Triphala with Trikatu tea; (3) Vision Restoration – Triphala‑licorice eye wash; (4) Cellular Renewal Mask – topical Triphala mask for skin; (5) Morning Intelligence Activation – a mindfulness practice to listen to the body’s needs. Throughout, Salima shares client case study Naomi, who experienced dramatic improvements in appearance, energy, and mental clarity after following the protocol, and includes listener feedback from Vindhya. The episode blends storytelling, Ayurvedic theory, modern research citations, practical recipes, and motivational encouragement, urging listeners to adopt these simple, low‑cost practices to reclaim vitality without sacrificing ambition.

You know what one of the worst things in life is? It's realizing you've become a stranger to yourself. I'm talking about that moment when you catch your reflection in your laptop screen during a Zoom call, perhaps, and think, who is that tired woman staring back at me? Hi, my name is Salila Sukumaran, and I am an Ayurveda practitioner based in currently rainy San Francisco Bay Area, California. And 3 weeks ago, I received a text message from a client and a friend that made me at once wince and chuckle a bit. It simply read, "Should I be getting Botox?" The woman who sent that text, she is an accomplished artist and a business owner, and hands down someone who won the lottery when it comes to flawless East Asian skin. She has two beautiful teenage girls who share all their cosmetic hacks with her. —a husband who provided a more than comfortable home at a sought-after address and was a source of steady friendship. But all was not well in paradise. Her husband had drifted off into his own life and hobbies, the girls were preparing to fly away into the world of higher studies and internships, and she felt empty and unfulfilled by her current role. And the wrinkles were a reminder of a life half-lived in service of others. She couldn't remember the last time she felt beautiful, really felt that feeling of aliveness. So if you're nodding along right now, you are not alone. Hey there, sisters! Here we are with yet another episode of Actionable Ayurveda, where we learn new ways to reconnect to our Ayurvedic intelligence, our inbuilt AI, for a juicy, glowy body and a life of purpose. As we begin this new season of Sacred Herbs, each week we will journey into the heart of one of Ayurveda's cherished herbs, unfolding its ancient story, its timeless healing gifts, and how it can nourish the lives of modern women like you. Today, let's talk about a Rasayana herb. That's ancient code for a powerful free radical fighter, and that's been revered for over thousands of years. The mighty Magical and mostly misunderstood Triphala. Here's what I need to tell you upfront, and it might surprise you. In all my work as a practitioner, there is one of the most common complaints I encounter. It's not migraines, it's not inflammation, it's not period issues. It's us women not feeling beautiful. And here's the thing, almost every one of us, each and every one of us, including me, I'm no exception, has struggled with this for years on end. Sometimes, sometimes lifetime. See, I spent my 30s thinking that looking and feeling exhausted was just normal, that brain fog was the price of being a maniac who wanted everything and some more, that my body betraying me was simply what happened to women when motherhood came knocking and everyday struggle for energy was normal. I was wrong, and I was missing something that women thousands of years ago understood instinctively. Picture this: it's 300 BCE, you are in the court of an Indian queen. She retires to her opulent bedroom within 3 hours of sunset. She doesn't check her emails or doomscroll through reels, but she drinks a mixture that her royal physician has prescribed her. 3 sacred fruit, ground by moonlight, chanted with mantras, steeped in water touched by moonlight and sunlight, called Hamsodakam, mixed with some forest honey and ghee. This isn't some fantasy. This is history. And that mixture, it's called Triphala Rasayana. Here's what blew my mind when I understood this. These ancient queens never experienced what we call burnout. Not because their lives were easier. Trust me, running a kingdom while dodging assassination attempts and court politics isn't exactly stress-free. But because they understood something we have completely lost track of. They knew that energy isn't just about eating more and more expensive foods like exotic fruit or nuts or precious spices or drinking stimulants like coffee or matcha. It's about preserving your own inherent life force, your cellular intelligence. Your body's ability to repair and renew itself while you live your incredible and demanding life. I have seen this pattern so many times now that I could predict it. A brilliant woman walks into my practice. She's successful by every external measure— a great job, well-brought-up children, a partner who supports her— but inside, she's running on empty, held together by caffeine and sheer willpower. Her symptoms read like a modern woman's laundry list. Afternoon crashes that hit like a wall. Skin that's either breaking out like a teenager's or aging faster than she can keep up with. Digestion that's either sluggish or unpredictable. And sleep? She wakes up feeling even more tired. What I do know is this. If I can help you recognize the early warning signals your body is sending, you can take some surprisingly simple steps that will create profound shifts. And I have experienced it myself. I have seen it in hundreds of patients. And today I'm going to share exactly how. I'm going to walk you through my proprietary 5-step protocol that you can implement starting tonight. And if you commit to it for the next 21 days, I know it's going to change everything because these are the exact steps I have used to help ambitious women in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond feel more vital than they did in their 20s. Hear me out. Everything I'm sharing is simple to implement, costs less than your monthly latte budget, and works with your existing routine, not against it. This isn't just about feeling better, though you absolutely will, It's about unlocking a level of mental clarity, physical energy, and emotional resilience that's going to show up in every area of your life. Your presentations will be sharper, your patience with your family deeper, your ability to handle curveballs more graceful. And when you finally do get time to rest, you will find that rest actually restores you. And I'm sharing this because I believe every ambitious woman deserves to feel as powerful in her body as she is in her career. So let me tell you about Triphala and why my Silicon Valley executive clients are quietly adding it to their morning routines. Triphala means three fruit in Sanskrit, but calling it just three fruit is like calling a Stradivarius violin some old wood with strings. This is a precisely calibrated formula that's been refined over millennia. In the ancient text Bhava Prakashanikantu, Triphala is described as Triphala kapha pitta agni meha kushta hara sara chakshushya deepani ruchya vishama Jwaranashini. What does this mean? This was Sanskrit for triphala balances kapha and pitta doshas. Kapha dosha is the element that keeps us together, it maintains the structure. Pitta dosha is what governs our metabolism, the energetic patterns that govern our body and our mind. It supports the urinary system, It improves skin health. It kindles digestive fire, our Agni. It improves eyesight and even works against recurrent, hard-to-cure fevers. Impressive, isn't it? But let's pause. Let me ask you this. When was the last time you woke up and felt fully energized, deeply rested, and utterly in tune with your body? The 3 fruits— amlaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki— work synergistically in ways that modern science is just beginning to understand. Recent studies have shown that triphala doesn't just improve digestion, it actually modulates your gut microbiome, increasing beneficial bacteria while suppressing harmful microbes. But here's the part that changed everything for me. Triphala is classified as a tridoshic rasayana. That means it adapts to what your body needs. Whether you're dealing with hormonal changes, chronic stress, or just accumulated wear and tear of a demanding life, Triphala meets you exactly where you are. And before I share the specific protocols, I need to tell you about someone we will call Naomi. Naomi contacted me last October after what she called her wake-up call moment. She was preparing for a talk at a prestigious venue in Europe. The night before, she looked in the mirror and she barely recognized herself. She had just gotten off a long-distance flight. She felt jittery and overwhelmed. Dark circles that concealer couldn't hide, skin that looked gray despite expensive treatments, and an exhaustion that went bone deep. Salila, she told me, I have built my entire identity around being sharp, being on top of my game, but I feel like I'm operating at 30% capacity and everyone's going to notice. Naomi's story matters because she represents something I see constantly: women who have optimized everything in their external world but ignored the internal systems that actually fuel performance. Now, before I give you the 5 game-changing protocols, I want to acknowledge something. You're probably feeling overwhelmed right now. You have tried so many things that promise to fix everything, and you are tired of disappointment. And here is what I need you to know. You don't have to overhaul your entire life tonight. In fact, trying to implement everything at once is a setup for failure. And failure is the last thing you need right now. As I walk you through these steps, I want you to listen with curiosity, not pressure. Notice which one makes you think, aha, yes, I could start that tomorrow, and which ones might be better saved for next month. Trust your instincts. They are smarter than you think. And how do I know this approach works? Because I have worked with many high-achieving women. And these are the exact protocols that consistently create transformation. And I'm not speaking to you from an imaginary pedestal. I'm speaking to you as a woman who walks this path with you. A mother navigating the tender chaos of co-parenting a teen. A daughter caring for aging parents while carrying her own dreams. A healer who holds space for others, even on days her own cup feels empty. A startup founder building something from her soul. A writer finding her voice page by page, word by word. And I know the pressure you live under. I know the exhaustion that has seeped into your bones. I know the guilt of putting yourself last, even while you're succeeding in every other arena of your life. You are not alone. I see you. And I'm standing right here with you. Let's talk about the first protocol, the Executive Evening Reset. The road to recovery starts with what I call the golden hour, that precious time between finishing work and going to sleep. Instead of collapsing with Netflix and wine— no judgment, we've all been there— you're going to create a 10-minute ritual that recalibrates your entire system. Mix a teaspoon of high-quality triphala powder in hot water. Make sure that you consume it within 3 months of opening the package. Add a teaspoon of raw honey to this when it's cool to touch, not for taste, but because honey acts as a yogavahi, a carrier that helps the herbs penetrate deeper into your tissues. Be careful with the temperature at which you mix in the honey. Never mix honey in hot water, as this will create a whole slew of other problems. Sip this slowly, mindfully. This isn't just supporting your elimination, though it will gently optimize that too. This is your body's overnight maintenance protocol. While you sleep, Triphala is working to repair cellular damage, reduce inflammation, and build up your ojas, your life force that makes you feel like yourself again. And every time I do this, I swear my skin looks more hydrated the next day. This was my instant remedy for Naomi, along with Protocol 4, which I will share shortly. If you have junk in the trunk, believe me, it shows on our face. Okay, now on to Protocol 2, the metabolic reset. Here's where we address the elephant in the room, that stubborn weight, especially around your midsection, that seems immune to every diet you have tried. I'm going to introduce you to Trikatu, 3 warming spices that work synergistically with Triphala to reignite your metabolic fire. This combination of dry ginger, pepper, and pippali, long pepper, is particularly powerful for women dealing with insulin resistance PCOS, or that frustrating plateau where nothing seems to work. I call this the metabolic reset tea. We take a teaspoon of triphala, our hero, and a quarter teaspoon of trikatu, and simmer in 2 cups of water until reduced to 1 cup. Sip on this along with your biggest meal. Hopefully your biggest meal is your lunch, and if you just said dinner was your biggest meal, we will have a different problem to fix. If you have stubborn weight, this could very well be the reason. Triphala Triphkatu Metabolic Reset Tea isn't just about weight loss. This is about restoring your body's ability to efficiently convert food into energy instead of storing it as fat. On to protocol 3, the Vision Restoration Ritual. If your eyes are burning by 3 PM and if you find yourself squinting at your screen, or if you have noticed your night vision isn't what it used to be, this is your intervention. Triphala is Chakshushya. It has a special affinity for eye health. The ancient texts describe it as giving eyes the clarity of an eagle. Your practice is to soak half a teaspoon of Triphala and half a teaspoon of licorice shavings in a cup of filtered water overnight. In the morning, strain through a double layer of fine unbleached muslin cloth and use this gentle solution as an eye wash. The relief is immediate. The long-term benefits are profound. Now, before I share the final two protocols, let me tell you what happened to Naomi after following these practices. She, of course, nailed that presentation she was nervous about. She looked great in all her pictures that got splashed across social media. But diligently following these practices for 3 weeks is what was a game changer for the long term. And I got a text from her saying, Salila, I feel like I've returned to myself. I feel unapologetically me. Now, Naomi's transformation wasn't just physical. Though her energy levels came back to normal, and her skin regained that glow she thought was gone forever. She told me a colleague stopped her to compliment her on her glowing skin. Her recovery was more than skin deep. She rediscovered her intuition, her zest for life, even her ability to be present with her family during the holidays without feeling like she was going to go out of her mind. Now let's go on to protocol. 4. The Cellular Renewal Mask. This was my second hack for Naomi. Treat this like your daily huddle with your skin, a chance to literally feed your face with nutrients that stimulate collagen production and reverse photoaging. Research shows that Triphala increases elastin synthesis by 35% and reduces melanin production, effectively turning back the clock on sun damage and hormonal pigmentation. In vitro studies have shown that Triphala extract stimulates the expression of elastin synthesizing genes in human skin cells. This effect contributes to its anti-aging properties by helping to maintain skin structure and elasticity. And some of the key findings from these studies were Gene stimulation. Research indicates that Triphala extract affects gene expression, specifically stimulating the genes responsible for producing elastin and collagen 1. Enzyme inhibition. In addition to increasing synthesis, Triphala effectively inhibits skin aging-related enzymes, including elastase, which breaks down elastin, and collagenase, which breaks down collagen. Antioxidant activity: the high concentration of antioxidants such as gallic acid and vitamin C helps protect skin cells from oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals, which normally accelerates the aging process. Overall effect: these actions combined demonstrate potential dermal anti-aging effects such as increasing skin elasticity, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Here is your renewal mask recipe: 1 teaspoon triphala powder, 1 teaspoon of honey, and a few drops of organic sesame oil. Use some rose water to loosen the paste. Apply to clean skin, leave it on for 15 minutes while you meditate or simply breathe, then rinse with cool water. Feeling like a queen? Go for an indulgent full body mask. Mix a cup of Triphala with half a cup of jaggery, a tablespoon of honey, a quarter cup of tahini or sesame powder, and a quarter cup of sesame oil, and thank me later. Let's talk about Protocol 5, our final protocol, the Morning Intelligence Activation. This final protocol is the most important one because it rewires our relationship with our body. Before you check your phone, before you mentally review your to-do list, place both hands on your heart and ask, "What does my body need today to feel strong and vital?" Then listen, not with your mind, but with your body's wisdom. Sometimes the answer will be more water, sometimes it'll be 15 minutes of sunlight, sometimes it will be permission to rest without guilt. This practice transforms you from someone who fights her body to someone who partners with it. Do this every time you take a break or get overwhelmed and feel out of touch with your body. This protocol should have been the first one because this is fundamental. Here's what I want you to understand. Ayurveda isn't just ancient medicine. It's the recognition that our body's intelligence is profound, that your symptoms are communication, not failures. And most importantly, you don't have to choose between ambition and vitality. Those queens I mentioned, they understood that self-care isn't selfish, it's strategic. They knew that a woman who tends to her own energy can tend to everything else with grace and power. Your healing doesn't have to be complicated. Listening to our own body should be commonplace and not some revolutionary act of resistance against the powers to be. Now I want to hear your story. What resonated the most? What are you going to try first? Have you felt like a stranger to yourself lately? One of our listeners, Vindhya reached out to me and sent me this message. Salila, I just wanted to say a very good morning, and I was thinking of you this morning. Thought I'd let you know which of your podcasts I enjoyed the most—Ama, Fasting, and Joint Health. I'm looking forward to your new podcast soon. Thank you, Vindhya, for your gracious words. Send me your thoughts, your questions, and I would love to share them here. And if this conversation sparks something in you, share it with another ambitious woman who might need to remember her own power. Until next time, may your Agni burn bright, may your Ojas overflow, and may you always remember that your body is not your enemy, it is your greatest ally. From my heart, To your heart, I'm wishing you a wonderful holiday season.
