Downsizing doesn't automatically simplify life. A smaller home cuts yard work but trades it for storage problems, less guest space, and HOA fees and meetings. The goal should be a home that fits your actual lifestyle, not just fewer square feet.

Many assume a smaller home automatically creates a simpler life. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. A smaller home may reduce exterior maintenance, but it may also reduce storage, may reduce flexibility, reduce room for visiting family, increase homeowners association involvement. Sometimes the work disappears, but it's replaced by homeowners association dues, shared decisions, or less flexibility. The goal is not simply to own less house. The goal is to create an ownership experience that works better for the life the person wants to enter into.
