A conversation about ferry access to Manitou Islands, where sand buildup has made the route impassable. Boats need 7 to 8 feet of water to avoid grounding, but lack of dredging has left the harbor too shallow since 2020.

So now they're going to take that dock, the current dock, and take it back to where we originally had it.
And why is that the best location?
So it's very, very naturally deep, but where they put the dock is next to Sandy Point where the lighthouse is there. And so there's just this ever-ending sand flow there, constantly changing. I don't know if you remember, like, the Three Brothers. It's— well, it's completely back covered again. There's no shipwreck there. It's back under the sand. So that's just how much the sand flows and how much the current and wind where it is just keeps filling up with sand. And requires dredging.
And requires dredging, which they haven't been doing.
No.
And so then that caused you to not be able to go to—
Correct. Okay, when did that happen? In 2020, we were not able to get to South Manitou because the dock was ripped out. That's redone. In North Manitou, it was filled in with sand. We couldn't get— well, we need, you know, really 7 or 8 feet of water with wind. Otherwise you're going to bottom out.
