Sandy Farquharson breaks down net positioning in racket sports. Stand at the second post, about 3.5 meters from the net, not closer. Too close leaves you vulnerable to lobs and limits your attacking options.

Oh! If you're inside this first post, you are way too close to the net. From here, you might be able to block the ball, but the moment it goes up, you're going to be in a bad position to defend the lob. In the space between second post and the service line, this is no man's land at a recreational level. At the pro level, it's transition zone, but back here, you're too far back to actually attack, and you're going to end up playing All these balls around ankle height, and therefore you can't actually take advantage in the net position. The best place to be is at this second post or just inside. This is 3.5 meters back from the net. From here you can go forward to the ball if it's short, you recover to your position, you go back for a bandeja, recover your position, and that way you are going to maintain the net and take advantage during the point.
