How the Desire for Perfection Stifles Business Growth

Sandy Wardenburg Waggett argues that waiting for perfection kills business growth. She cites Rachel Hollis's $9.99/month app launch and Seth Godin's "just ship it" philosophy, showing that small errors like a typo won't tank a successful launch. Publish despite the flaws.

Good morning, everyone. Sandy Weigt here with MSW Interactive Designs. And this is sort of an impromptu marketing tip or business tip, because this morning I was thinking about sharing Seth Godden's point about just shipping it, not waiting for things to be absolutely perfect before you put your work, your marketing or whatever it is, your product out into the public. And then when I got to my office this morning, I was just like, well, no, I'm busy. I don't have time to do this today. And then I opened up an email. My team, and kudos to Alicia Conrad, who got my team to sign up for this Rachel Hollis program five to thrive. For the next 90 days, we are going to be focusing on certain things. So this is Rachel Hollis's new launch. And what she selling is a lifestyle app, which is $9.99 a month. And so her big launch is October 1st, and it goes October, November, December. But the whole point of it is with her mindset and her encouragement to get people thriving in life. But her product that she's selling is her app. So clearly, they launched it, they marketed it. The launch, though, is what I really want to talk about today around the idea of just shipping it. It doesn't have to be perfect. And this is where we as owners with our content, our pieces, our products, our ideas, we get hung up because we are afraid to be criticized. We are afraid to have something out there that has a mistake in it. So I just wanted to share with you this because Rachel Hollis, who you know is obviously internationally known, her download today in my inbox, which is the thing that everybody who signed up for this challenge gets on her five to Thrive on point number four, give up one food category. You know you shouldn't be eating. There's a typo in the word shouldn't. This went out to every single one of her subscribers. And, you know, a lot of people would be mortified about this. I'm not. And some people will criticize her for this. But this is a perfect example of why you should not get hung up on tiny, tiny little details.
This could have been held back. You know, somebody probably should have caught it. But you know what? It doesn't hurt anything. It doesn't hurt anybody. And her product launched today, and it launched to a gazillion people. I mean, I don't know how many, but a lot. And, you know, a good percentage of them signed up for her $9.99 a month app. So she didn't wait for it to be perfect. The fact is, the launch was scheduled for today. So it just went out. And you know, as business owners, we need to think more that way, less hypercritical of ourselves. You know, if you're thinking about putting out video content like I'm doing here, you know, gosh darn it, you know, maybe your makeup's not perfect, maybe your hair looks a little funky, maybe your voice is a little raspy because you have a little bit of a cold, you know, but that is no reason not to put your content and your ideas and your aspirations and your help out into the world. So this again, like I said, this is not an original concept for me. Seth Godd my video. See, here's. Here's another thing. It's not going to be perfect. You have a hard time seeing it, but he has got this pamphlet around his idea of just ship it. Don't wait for it to be perfect. I am going to put a link to that for you to download in this post, and I suggest you download it. And it is just a practical guide. If you've got a product, an idea, some kind of marketing piece that you want to put out there, it just goes through and lines out an exact process for how to do it. And gosh darn it, he walks you through putting it out there where it doesn't have to be perfect. Just ship it. So keep that in mind as you are thinking about things that you're doing around your business. You know, there's always going to be critics out there and there's always going to be another typo and who, frankly, cares, right? All right, that's my marketing tip for today. Just ship it. If Rachel Hollis can do it, you can, too. Have a great day, everyone. Sandy Wagyu with MSW Interactive Designs signing off.
