Hey, everyone. Sandy Waggett here with MSW Interactive designs and transform and inspire your business. And I'm here today with three marketing tips that I would love to see you carry into the new year for your business. The first one is Get Different. I've been talking about this book, Get Different, Mike Michalowicz's new book. And one of the analogies he uses in this book is that if you are a bin of apples in a grocery store in the produce aisle, it's hard for another apple to stand out, right? Some might be a little shinier, some might look a little more colorful, some might be a little bit more firm, but they generally all look the same. When you're doing your marketing and promoting your business like everyone else in your industry, you kind of look the same, too, using the same language, using the same techniques, using the same strategies. So how do you stand out in a bin of apples? You stand out by being an orange, right? That's the analogy that he uses. So think about it this way. What can you do differently enough in your marketing, in your business, in your industry to be the orange, not the bin of apples? Don't be like everybody else. Be different. So that's tip number one. Tip number two, there's two paths, right? You can't take both. You can only choose one. In other words, you can't be all things to all people. You've got two choices, right? You can either.
Build your business and build your messaging to spec and become a commodity, or you can set out to exceed expectations and get different so that you become remarkable. The idea is not to be a commodity, because when you're a commodity, you suddenly begin competing on price, and that's a quick race to the bottom. So what can you do in your business, in your approach and how you interact with customers, your vendors, and your team to become remarkable and not position yourself as a commodity. And to that point, my tip number three that I'd love to see you carry into the new year is to remember that business is about creating and keeping clients. Most people focus the bulk, if not all, of their marketing investment on getting the clients, and they forget about keeping the clients. They assume that'll take care of itself, but it doesn't. The most successful businesses invest a portion of their marketing budget or their marketing dollars in marketing to existing clients from a service perspective, in the form of exceeding expectations, in the form of surprising clients with great value, unexpected things. So stop focusing 100% on the two in the bush philosophy and focus on the one in hand. The one in hand is the existing clients. How can you give them such a remarkable experience that they become your biggest advocates, your most loyal fans, and would never consider leaving and going somewhere else? So those are my three tips. Get different choose the path of nonconformity. Don't put yourself in the position to become a commodity. And then, number three, invest some of your marketing dollars in taking care of and exceeding the expectations of existing clients. That will give you a business for life, profit for life and growth for life. Sandy Waggett with MSW Interactive designs and transform and inspire your business.
