Namo Amida Butsu. Welcome everybody, really good to see you, and special welcome to Clare who is hopefully still recovering from the horrible virus. It's just me and Ralph tonight, just got Ralph down here, he's brought his bone with him, vegan bone. Kasper is at a meeting for Exile Buddhists to talk about what is special about Buddhists in terms of how we do climate activism, so he's upstairs in that meeting. And Dhyame, if you're willing later, maybe you wouldn't mind unmuting to do the call and response bit, but if not, don't worry, I'll do it on my own.
Great.
So I thought that I'd say something this evening about one of the things I really love about Pure Land Buddhism, which is something that really struck me when I first encountered it. The idea is that where we begin as Pure Land Buddhists is from a position of knowing ourselves as foolish beings. Foolish beings of wayward passions is the phrase that's usually translated from the Japanese, and the word 'bonbu' means foolish beings, bonbu beings. And when I first encountered this idea, immediately something in me began to relax or to imagine that it was okay to be a foolish being.
It's all right there.
There's one bone and two dogs, which is a problem.
Aaah!
Well, you ate yours, didn't you? So This Friday I have my diary all blanked out, and the idea was that I was going to have a retreat day. And I've got some very complicated essays about Pure Land Buddhism that a colleague sent me. I've printed them out, got them ready. I was going to not check any of my online— not going to check my phone or anything online all day, and really dedicate the day to practice and learning. And I noticed this afternoon as I was seeing my clients that there was a part of me that was saying— there was a part of me that was saying, you're actually really quite tired, that there's been quite a lot going on, and the idea of a whole day full of studious practice was not appealing to me. I realized that I've fallen into a trap that I often fall into, which is seeing spiritual practice and spiritual learning as something that I do, which will make me a good girl, it will make me a good Buddhist, it will mean that I'm much more calm or knowledgeable or closer to enlightenment, whatever it is. And that thinking comes from within my bambu system. It comes from within the same sort of thinking that gets me into all kinds of other trouble. And I remembered that as a Pure Land Buddhist, I don't need to do anything. I just need to say Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, and Amida's grace will Amida's merit, Amida's work for us, on our behalf, will take us all to the Pure Land where we will become enlightened nice and easily, from within our lotus petal or from without, and that practice really can be seen as an expression of our gratitude for that fact. It's really hard for me to believe that, but I kind of know that it's true. I have glimpses of experiencing it's true. And when I have those glimpses, I'm ironically more likely to want to do the things that are good for me, like be in nature or read things that are spiritually nourishing or be quiet. So where this has taken me to is acknowledging that I am tired and that I'm very grateful to have a whole day on Friday to do with whatever I want. And I think I'm going to make it a holi treat, which is something I invented a few years ago when I went away on my own., and I couldn't quite— I didn't quite like the idea of it being a proper retreat, so I thought I'd mush the two together. And I had a really wonderful 4 days doing a mixture of reading spiritual texts and going on walks and watching trashy TV and eating popcorn and, you know, all the kind of the whole mix of things that make up life and make up leisure and make up non-work. And all that kind of thing. So Friday will be Holly Treat, and I'm sure that I will read some of those essays because I'm actually looking forward to reading them. But I'm also thinking maybe I'll— not much we can do at the moment, I know— but maybe I'll go on a slightly longer walk for my daily walk, or maybe I'll read a bit of my other book which isn't worthy and that feels much better. So we can always rely on ourselves to do the things that we tend to do, that we, we, we are stuck inside our brains most of the time, and a lot of the thinking we do comes from within that system. But when we can remember that there's something outside that system that just loves us, that just loves us as we are, then everything feels a little bit easier. So I am going to lead us into some quiet meditation. I'm going to then mute and fetch a bone for Aiko and come back, and then after a while I'll start some chanting. The chanting we'll do today I'll decide when we get there, and if you don't know the words, just kind of a good approximation will do. No moan me to be.

So now we'll recite the refuges and precepts together. Gyame, if you are able and willing, do unmute. Thank you. So please repeat after me. After me. For refuge I go to the Buddha. For refuge I go to the Buddha. Namo Buddha.
Namo Buddha.
For refuge I go to the Dharma. Namo Dharma. For refuge I go to the Sangha. Namo Sanghaya. With faith in the Three Jewels, I pray that I may not take life. With faith in the Three Jewels, I pray that I may not steal. With faith in the Three Jewels, I pray that I may not fall into sexual misconduct. With faith in the Three Jewels, I pray that I may avoid wrong speech. With faith in the Three Jewels, I pray that I may avoid intoxication. I pray that I may avoid intoxication.
Innumerable are sentient beings, we vow to save them all. Inexhaustible are deluded passions, we vow to transform them all.
Immeasurable are the Dharma teachings. We vow to master them all. Infinite is the Buddha's way. We vow to fulfill it completely. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. I don't know what that sounded like to you guys. We lost Jarmaine, but sorry about singing. That's fine, the singing sounded good to me, but it might not have sounded good to anyone else. So we'll now do prostrations, and either prostrate to the floor or do a bow or bowing your head, whatever feels comfortable. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
Namoh Amida Butsu. Namoh Amida Butsu. Na mo amida bi. Na mo amida. Na mo amida. Na mo amida bi. Namoh Amida Butsu. Namoh Amida Butsu. Namoh Amida Butsu. Namoh Amida.
I think that might have been you, Philip, that made Ralph bark. Philip's just above the, uh, I think you're just up there, are you?
No?
Oh, okay, it wasn't you, it was someone in the guest room. Blaming you for no reason. Okay, so we always finish by saying a verse together, which I will just put into the chat box. Oh, it was there earlier, now it's gone.
That's strange.
Okay, so if everyone wants to— everyone who can unmute, including Becky, who now has sound, then we'll recite this together. Blessed by Amitabha's light, may I care for all living things and the holy earth. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
