Scott Perry explains why viral Substack notes don't convert readers into paid subscribers. Purchases come from existing followers who were already thinking about subscribing, not from new people who see the viral post.

If you are posting notes for the sake of hoping that you can figure out how to get a note to go viral and that somehow miraculously that will give you the number of subscribers that you need to have a viable business or that they will inspire someone to purchase your thing, it's, it's a fantasy. Yes, I do get notifications from SubSec that say, hey, congratulations, your note brought in 2 paid subscribers or whatever it is. The note didn't bring any paid subscribers. Because nobody reads a note and then says, "This is obviously so brilliant, I have to go ahead and shell out my hard-earned money." Doesn't matter if it's a $9 monthly subscription or a $300 founder level. If people are not purchasing on the virtue and value of what you said in a note, they have probably been following you for a long time. They are probably subscribed to your Substack already and reading your content, and they have been thinking about whether or not they should pull the trigger and actually join your community for a long time. And they just happened to be reminded of that when they read your notes. So they, so they went ahead and made the purchase.
