Nesting Custody Explained: How to Successfully Implement This Child-Focused Divorce Solution

Nesting keeps kids in the family home while parents rotate in and out, either on set days or using a second residence. It works best as a temporary arrangement during high-conflict divorce, giving children stability while parents figure out a longer-term plan.
What nesting is, is it's when the kids stay in the house and the parents rotate in and out. A kind of a subset of nesting is actually when you both cohabitate in a house during a divorce process or even after, but the kids are also there. And one parent essentially is like in charge on specific days, and it's that— it's their day, and, uh, and the other parent's on their day.
Would you say nesting is preferred during divorce or an alternative?
Yeah, I mean, it allows you to get a temporary agreement for most people, like during a divorce process. So like when the tension's high and the kids are being impacted, oftentimes it's advisable to no longer be living together. But in San Diego, you know, adding a second location that's like where the kids could also live part-time, and then arriving at all those details for what that parenting plan is, is going to be, you have to figure all that out. Mm-hmm. And so nesting could be like, hey, Why don't we just share a second location, or you live at your mom's, I'll live at my mom's on the other days, and we'll just keep rotate in and out just to get, you know, just to get through this time period until we can figure out the long-term things.
Mm-hmm.
