Sean Everett reflects on the artist's inner voice and how it can be nurtured or suppressed. Artists are vessels translating universal truths into music, dance, writing, design, and more. Suffering and lived experience fuel meaning, and honesty in your creative voice matters more than commerce.

Good morning. I woke up this morning thinking about artist spirit, and I think that artist spirit is alive in all of us. I think it starts as a quiet, super quiet voice, and some people stoke that fire, others maybe suppress it or don't listen to it, and The more you listen to it, the more you invest in it, the bigger it becomes. And I think a lot of artists will tell you, if you listen closely, that they're just tuning forks picking up resonant frequencies from the universe, and they're just a vessel pointed through a pen or through their body— performative art. Dance, music, writing, painting, applications, software, the way you take care of a family in spite of what you've been through, the way you package water and the style of a bottle, the story you tell, a brand you create, a business you create, the core values you stand on, the belief systems you have. It all comes from this creation So sort of sitting here wondering, what do you do with it? Have all this time in a life, some more than others. Your art could be Excel, could be a drawing, could be a refrigerator, an industrial object, a toy, a movie. A story. Yeah. Anything that you put into this world. I think the great artists, as I've studied it, have a perspective, have a story to tell. It comes from a place of living, of having experienced things. Suffering is the only universal truth. The happiness, the joys, The pain. It's riding that wave of life, understanding what that wave looks like, looking at it from the third-person perspective, the philosophy of it, the psychology of it, trying to find meaning in an open universe that just moves and changes. The spoken word is art. This technically is art. Anything that you create from yourself that's honest. True, authentic. And I guess it just comes down to like being honest with that feeling that you have and then capturing something that is invisible, hard to put a finger on or a pin in, packaging it into some physical, verbal, auditory— you're repackaging a resonant frequency into something else to communicate it to others. And I think that's really all an artist spirit does, is it just— the greats feel something deeply and truthfully. Some call it like an open wound exposed for the whole world to experience. It doesn't have to be a wound, could be great joy or just awe of nature or of a surrounding, of a setting, of of an environment, but it is that capture and communication. And I think that's all it is, is, is us trying to put our finger on universal truths. And the ones that really resonate— the movies, the films, the songs, the stories, the poems, the fashion, the paintings. The books, the cave paintings—it's all to just find that universal truth and help others see that universal truth, connect with that universal truth. And we're just back to this connection point. So I think you just have to strip away all these layers. And, um, just get back to an honest representation of what you're called to say, the truths you have, and put that into something, into a product, into whatever. And the commercial side of it really does— it's great because it allows you to do things and invest more and create different and new and larger forms of art. But if you lose sight of which item comes first, the money or the or the art, you can become unbalanced. And there's no soul to the money. There's soul to the art, right? I think in some ways monetary design could be art. Look at Bitcoin. But it was based on a core set of values and a frustration and a pain and suffering that was. Seen in a global-scale economic system. So once again, it's packaging that resonant frequency into something that can be used to connect with others and ideally help them understand themselves, other things. So artist spirit, do you have it? What's yours? Have you sought it? Are you investing in it? If you had something to say deep at the core of you that's resonant, that you just can't turn off, it's likely there's others in the world that have it too. And given you put that in something else, it's likely that they'll connect to it. You don't have to do much else except just be honest and let it flow out into the things that you make. Art is spirit.
