Sean Everett explains three levers for scaling: hiring, writing code, and creating media. Software scales at near-zero marginal cost, unlike physical goods. The talk pushes you to think about how to achieve 10x to 1000x growth.

Hello. Let's talk about scaling. Why is scaling so important? And why did the technology industry do such a good job of it? The reason that all the investors and everyone have piled into software is because of leverage, right? So I can write a piece of code once, have that piece of code used by millions, even billions of people. And that gives me a ton of leverage, which helps me scale. At zero marginal cost, which means for every other person that interacts with that piece of code, I pay essentially zero. I mean, it goes to zero. It's not exactly zero, but consider the difference between every single cupcake that you make. You— it's hard to scale. You still have the same unit costs. Sure, at a huge amount. If you're Hostess, you're paying a smaller dollar amount for the ingredients, but you're still paying something. It's not close to zero. So here's the question you need to ask yourself. Wherever you are in your business, your life, whatever, what do you have to do to scale it 10x? The motions you're doing now are probably different than the motions you need to do in order to get the 10x results that you have. So you need to think about leverage. And what are the 2 ways you get leverage? You do something once and you continue to get the benefit of that over time. 2, well, 3 areas that works. One, you can hire a bunch of people and they can do stuff. That comes with its own costs. 2, you can write code and that means you need some expertise. Or 3, you can create media. And media has been around for a long time. It's not going anywhere. Anyone can do it. Just sit in front of a keyboard, type some letters, record a video, record some sound, and all of a sudden you've got a media business on your hand. That's it. Think about scale. How do you go 10x or 100x or 1,000x from where you are right now? Have a great one.
