So how do you listen effectively to your team? Well, according to the National Law Review, most malpractice suits against doctors are from patients who felt ignored or unheard. The doctors who never get sued are the ones that patients saw as the most compassionate, and it's the same way for you. So are you listening to your team with an intent to direct their steps or an intent to discover their story? As a basketball coach, I remember Bob Knight saying, "Everybody listens, but very few actually hear." And so if you're leading effectively, one of the number one things you can do to be more compassionate and to help your people feel heard is to intentionally listen to discover their story. That's what effective leaders do.
