Sean Glaze explains how to get teams to adopt change: make the next step clear, reward incremental progress to overcome fear, and use small wins to drive adoption. He uses a puppy-training staircase analogy to show how breaking change into manageable steps works.

So how do you get your team to embrace change? Well, change requires them to commit to something more important than their own comfort. And I remember when we first started training our puppy to go upstairs to our son's room. The puppy didn't want to take the first step and certainly couldn't imagine making it to the top of the steps. But we put a treat on the first step and the puppy jumped up. And we put a treat on the second step, and the puppy jumped up. And it's the exact same way with your team. When you're trying to implement change as an effective leader, people are afraid of fog. You need to make the next step clear, but you also need to make sure that you're rewarding progress along the way so they see the benefits of taking those steps. They're going to lead to the far more productive implementation of the new platform or process that you've introduced. I'm Sean Glaze. That's what effective leaders do.
