What's a performance review activity you can use with your team in your one-on-ones and communication calls? Well, one of the most powerful things you can do is to have ongoing consistent calls and communication with your team so they understand not just what they need to do, but what they're doing well and how they're impacting the results that your team is seeking. But in those one-on-one conversations, if there's been an issue, using an index card can be an unbelievably powerful way to improve the results that your team members are getting. On the front side of the index card, have them write down what are their top 3 responsibilities as part of the team, and you do the same. Then take a few minutes to decide if those are the same things that you wrote that the person wrote on their card, and maybe discuss why were they different if they were. Even more importantly, after you've identified those top 3 roles that they are taking ownership of on the team, then you want to actually have have them on a scale of 1 to 10 rank where is their performance at presently for each of those responsibilities. Have them rank 1 to 10 each of those, and then you do the same, and discuss what your rank is versus what their rank is. That gives you a very objective way to have a discussion about some of the things that are affecting your team results and help that individual to improve and develop as a winning teammate themselves. I'm Sean Glaze. That's what effective leaders do.
