Chapters
Becoming a more effective leader starts with improving your awareness. And one way to become more aware is to question the stories you are telling yourself about your team members or situation. Questioning your stories diminishes the impact of your negative assumptions. Because sometimes our beliefs become blinders that limit our ability to see things. Sometimes assumptions can keep us stuck. And some beliefs are baggage we've accepted from our peers and past. And when we don't question our assumptions, we get stuck dealing with symptoms instead of discovering the real problem that we need to address. So, whatever challenge or situation you are facing today, know that the stories you are telling yourself are shaping the interactions you are having with your people. It's normal to have negative or unproductive thoughts at times. That is just human nature. But holding onto those thoughts can cause you to have less productive interactions with your team. Are you making negative assumptions about someone on your team? Leaders stumble not because they have unproductive thoughts, but because they accept them as true. Effective leaders know that not all thoughts need to become beliefs. Effective leaders question the stories they tell themselves.
