A short transcript excerpt from a January 7, 2026 YouTube video by Mike Melton. Two speakers explain wheel balancing methods—static (single-plane) vs dynamic/dual-plane—and show that some wheels must be statically balanced because there isn’t enough room for dual-plane weights. They describe a truck that Discount Tire technicians repeatedly tried to dynamically balance (causing vibration) when the wheel required static balancing, and they criticize inconsistent training/standards at Discount Tire.
Let's address this right here.
So there's a couple main ways that you balance wheels.
So this wheel right here on my.
Truck is going to be a single plane, or you want to call it static balance. Now, I will like this. You're going to do a dual plane or dynamic balance, whatever you want to call it.
And what that means is you're going.
To put a weight right in here and on the back side of the wheel. Now, for the single plane or the static balance, you're just going to put it on one part of the inside of the wheel and I'm going to.
Tell you the reason for that. So the only reason you're going to ever have to static balance a wheel is if it's made a certain way.
Like mine are, or those wheels the.
Discount Tire had that they tried to dynamically bounce the wheels.
You can't do that.
So when I mean made a certain way.
So picture this being the back of the wheel, right? So if you got enough space, you're going to dynamically bounce. So you're going to put away here and then a weight here, right? That's how you dynamically or dual plane balance the wheel. Now when you don't have enough room, say that's cut off, you got about that much space. Well, in that instance, you're going to static balance it because that's going to give you a better balancing than dynamic because there's not enough space in between the two planes. So if you try to dynamically balance the wheels with two, two weights like they did, it will vibrate.
So the truck that came in that needed to be rebalanced, they could never get it right. Discount Tire was trying to dual plane balance the wheels, which is dynamically balance the wheels. And you can't. That wheel requires to be static balanced. That is it. That's why he was having so many issues. And I'm not sure who trained that person, but I know a lot of guys that discount are pretty good guys. And then you have some that just have low standards and if they get busy, they lower those standards even more.
