In this solo presentation, Mike Melton explains that the key to scaling a small business while preserving family time is to deliberately build leaders within the company. He argues that owners often start by doing the hands‑on work (e.g., detailing cars) but must transition to working on the business by developing people who can take over daily operations. Melton highlights common mistakes: lacking the right people and not having a mentor who has already walked the path. He stresses a people‑first culture—caring about employees’ home and family lives—to prevent negative energy from spilling into the workplace. He also notes that owners must first be self‑led, establishing personal standards and a clear culture before they can expect others to follow. By creating a pipeline of leaders, setting standards, and fostering a supportive environment, business owners can “buy back” their time, enjoy weekends, and still achieve growth.

The best way to build a business and still have time for your family like I do, where I take off weekends, is to build leaders in your company. Okay, leaders build leaders. And once you do that, you'll have a company that's thriving, a company that's growing, and you'll have a team and of, of, of killers, of leaders. And, and these people will give you your time back. So it's like buying back your time. A lot of people go into business and they're new to business. They know how to do the work, they know how to work on the cars, they know how to detail the cars, they know how to clean the house, right? These are people that open their own business, but they know how to do the work, but they don't know how to run the actual business and build the leaders inside that business who can, who can start to actually do the work for them so they can get out of the business itself, working in it, and start working on it. That's how you grow it. The biggest mistakes that business owners make when they're trying to build leadership culture and build a big brand is not having the right people around them and not having a mentor in their life that's already done it and is already where they want to go. In order to build a culture where your team cares Listen, and, and business owners, you really need to listen to this. You have to care about your team more than their team cares about themselves, okay? So what I'm saying by that is a lot of people are underdogs, all right? I myself am an underdog, and you want to make sure that they're good. You want to make sure that their home life's good, their family life's good. Because if that ain't good, they're going to bring that bad energy into your shop. And if they ever do, a lot of business owners, they always like to tend to either get your attitude better or you're fired, right? So me, I'm a little different. I'm going to dig into the issue. What's bothering you today? You know, and we're going to talk about your personal issues. This is where a lot of businesses, they don't care about people. I actually care about my team. That's why we thrive. In order to build a culture and strong leadership, listen, you have to be able to be self-led. If you can't lead yourself, you can't lead others. And then, and then that's when you start to build your culture and your team. So when you start to build your culture, you start to build your standards. That's where I would start at.
