Mike Melton describes firing an employee for a bad attitude, who then took a job at Discount Tire for $13 an hour instead of his previous $23. Melton argues that toxic attitudes spread like cancer and that lower pay doesn't make a worse job acceptable.

After we fired a guy, we found out he went to Discount Tire. You know how long he stayed there? One day. You know why? Because they started him out at $13 an hour. Who in the hell can live off $13 an hour? I'm sorry to tell you, but he left. Well, he didn't leave, but we fired him. He was making $23 an hour, so he dropped $10 an hour, and they wanted him to train all his— all their team just like we do. That's pretty damn funny. Remember, the damn grass ain't always greener on the other side. And the reason we fired him is because he had a badass attitude. Dude, I'm gonna tell you what, he was a good, good worker, knew everything, but we don't deal with attitudes, and attitudes got to go because cancer is spreading.
