Mike Melton shows how his tire shop builds a high-performance culture through role-played customer interactions, equipment like a $35,000 Hunter Maverick mounting machine, and daily training. He emphasizes that leaders must transfer all knowledge to make trainees better than themselves, and that discipline in the shop prevents costly mistakes with real customers.

So this is one thing that you need to be doing with your guys. You have to roleplay, because I would rather make a mistake— my guys make a mistake with me— than make a mistake with my customers. Because one, it's going to cost you the customer. Two, it's going to cost you money. Let's see how good this guy does. So my objection to him is, I got a couple more places to check. Go ahead.
Totally understand, Mike. Would you be mad at me if I save you some time and money this day.
No, how you going to do that?
Well, hypothetically speaking, let's say you already went, checked all the other tire shops around, you even checked online for some tires.
Now, and you—
and where's your last stop? Where your last— yeah, where your last stop?
All right, now you see that right there? This is why it's costing a lot of people money. This is why we role play. This is why we train. He is in training, so that's why he's not as good as I am, but I'm going to make him better. A leader makes people better than them. A lot of you guys say, oh, that guy's not as good as me. Well, I'm gonna tell you what, take your damn ego, take everything that you know, and put it in their head. Make them better than you. Look at this guy right here. Here's the fucking hole plugger, son. At our shop, we use nothing but Road Force balancers. What Road Force balancer is, it's a diagnostic machine to check for any kind of vibrations before we put tires in your car. Not only that, we use a flange plate. What this does not only protects the face of the wheel because you don't want anything pressing on the face of that, it also gives you a better balance because it's balanced like it's actually on the vehicle itself. Now let me show you exactly how the machine works. So there's a roller here, and what it does, it puts 1,200 pounds of force on the tire simulating it being driven on the vehicle. Now before we balance this thing out, you know what we got to do? We got to take that damn sticker off, son. This is a Summit car tire. These things always balance out right. So let's go ahead and balance this thing out. So right now we got it spinning. Here in a second, that roller is going to come down. Like I said, it's going to put about 1,200 lbs of force on that tire. It's going to diagnose any kind of vibration issues before they go on that vehicle, cuz there's nothing more frustrating than getting a set of tires, brand new tires, on your vehicle and then you're going to have a vibration issue. All right, so now, like anybody else, they would put weight on it. So now like this one here, it's a little too high for us. So what we're going to do, we're going to force match the tire and we're going to bring that radial runout down. So what radial runout is, it's kind of like your tire's in an egg shape. So if it's in an egg shape, what's it going to do? It's going to cause a vibration. So once we fix that runout issue, it's going to put it— make it more of a circle. So that kind of dumbs it down for you. All right, now this is a new guy. He's training. So this is Aiden. He's our crew chief. All right, what a crew chief does, he makes sure everything's right before it goes out the door. All right, what he's doing, he's helping him position that thing so you don't break the stencil. So, so watch him train. He's just training them. I'm gonna stay out the way. There you go, pops on there. That way you never ever break a stencil. Listen, this is where a lot of shops don't do— they don't train their team. We train every day. We have to train every day. It is a non-negotiable for me.
Non-negotiable.
Got a customer here for a new set of wheels, so they're gonna be some TIS off-road wheels, and we're gonna be pairing these things up with some, uh, Toyo AT3s. That's what that thing looks like mounted up already. That's a good-looking damn wheel. It's one of their brand new styles. That's the Toyo AT3s. Putting on there some 35x12.50-20s. Here at our shop, we definitely don't cheap out on equipment. I know a lot of guys, when they open up tire shops, or even if they have an existing tire shop that's been there for 10 years, They want to cheap out on equipment. Listen, don't cheap out on equipment. This is a Hunter Maverick machine. It's about $35,000, but it's well worth it because you don't damage wheels and it's, and it's less work for your guys. It's better on the back. You agree with that, don't you, Tyler? Now a lot of shops just use these and only these. We use these on your steel wheels and stuff like that, your high-end wheels. We're going to use that. Now this is another thing. Road Force balancers. A lot of shops cheap out. They don't get this type of balancer because they say it costs too much. You know, listen, don't cheap out on your equipment because it's going to cost you more at the end of the day. Tires we're going to wrap these in, of course, they're going to be the Nitto G2s. So as far as a performance tire, that is a hell of a tire and it's DOT approved. Now let's show you how easy it is to mount this thing up, get that thing below that drop center. So we're just going to put it— come down a little bit more. All right, so what you want, you want that, that tire below that drop center right there. That's going to help allow to mount that tire a lot easier. All right, now go ahead with it. Show them how easy it is to mount a tire with this Maverick machine. All touchless. You ain't got nothing touching the face of that wheel at all. Come down with that roller a little bit. There you go. Come on around. Now he's new on this machine, so don't, don't hit him too hard in the comments. This guy's new on this machine, he's training on it. He got it though, he got it. After he's done inflating it, what he's gonna do, he's gonna massage the bees. That way we get all the radial run out of these, out of these wheels and tire setup before it goes to the balancer. That way it's gonna ride the best. All right, so when you drive a truck like that, you usually wear pink thongs. We got the bees massaged, now let's quit bouncing this thing out. You want to use that flange plate. What he's doing now is lining it up, make sure that everything's right before we put it on the balancer. All right, so you got it on there. Take your wing nut, tighten her up. Since these new wheels, of course they ain't got to take no weight off, but you do have to take that damn sticker off. Get that off it. Go ahead, balance this thing out. So if you're not familiar with my content, this is a Road Force balancer. It's got a roller. This roller is going to come down and put 1,200 pounds of force on the tire, simulating it being driven on the vehicle. So it's going to diagnose any kind of vibration issues so we can fix those before it goes on the vehicle. So here in just a second, it's going to come off and it's going to give us our runout ratings. So here we go. Roller's coming off. So it's only asking for half ounce here, half ounce here, and we're below the threshold. Everything's green. That's what you want to see. That way that thing rides smoother than a Cadillac, son. All right, we got the Pandy Dropper in here, son. All right, this is what he came in for. He came in for old tire repair, so we're gonna patch her up. Now, business fitness has got to be very important because that's a lot of discipline. That's what a lot of people don't have in their personal life or in business. That's why it either fails— their marriage fails or their business fails— because they're not disciplined enough. All right, I told y'all we got something different. Now you see no logos on this truck at all, but it's going to be changing. And that's who's going to be changing it right there. All right, I'm over here and this guy is trying to damn take his damn finger and get that adhesive on. Now you know they make rubber wheels. He just wants to damn take forever. Y'all believe that shit?
