Data Products Are Becoming Mini-Apps #substack #shorts

Data products are evolving from dashboards into mini-apps that recommend or execute actions directly. Shagility traces how teams moved from Google Sheets for reference data to building dedicated apps with write-back capabilities, blurring the line between data tools and software products.

So, if we think about data products, information products, right? And we go, in the past, they've always been very BI-centric, right? They've always been dashboardy, right? They've always been BI reporty kind of thing. And we move more to products that actually start actions, right? They actually either assist somebody to say, here's the next best action you should take, or actually, I'm going to take it for you with your permission, right? I'm going to do this, yes, no kind of thing. Then actually, isn't that really still SIQ? in a data and information team, right? Like, why do these mini apps, we keep, I keep thinking of them as software products, right? I keep thinking they need to be in a software team, in an IT team, they need to be driven by software product managers. And then I go back and actually go, well, actually maybe not, right? Maybe these are just data that's incurring an action. You know, the number of times we've built data platforms and we always end up building a data entry screen, like we're doing it at the moment, reference data, right? We have a bunch of reference data for a customer. We used to always build it in Google Sheets, right? Because we had the integration with GCP, Google Cloud, it was out of the box. We'd already built it. So we're like, you maintain that Google Sheet, we'll treat it as a view of a table. We'll lock it down a little bit so you can't change the schema and then we'll fix it when you do. And that gave us a cheap, easy way of doing reference data, right? Right now we're now building the apps, right? We're saying, well, actually, why don't we give you something that's more magical? Yeah, than a sheet, right? So we'll give you a mini app. So we're now starting to do that write-back, you know, that creation, that mastering, that write-back, which we always tried not to in a data platform. So I'm thinking the data world is going to start extending out, right, into these places that we never really wanted to go. Master data management. I mean, I want to come back and ask you about master records for patients.
