Don’t Reinvent Healthcare Standards #substack #shorts

Shagility and a colleague discuss why healthcare shouldn't rebuild existing standards. They cover US incentives for EHR adoption, public funding's role, and established efforts like FHIR and OMOP. The key point: leverage existing taxonomies and governance instead of starting from scratch.
I mean, we get this nice benefit, at least in the United States, where the US government has done a lot of work.
I don't know the actual timelines of when this happened, right? To incentivize the industry to get onto electronic health records when they were on paper records and to create interoperable standards. You can send records between hospitals. And because the US, we're not a single payer system in the US, right? We have private and public, but obviously being paid by the federal government under their, the many patients they cover for Medicaid and Medicare. incentivizes you to meet their interoperability standards for payment and reimbursement. So there's a lot of public funding and public incentives that have helped create some normalization in healthcare, which is really, really nice. But like you said, we'd be crazy to start from scratch and act like this meaning and all this work hadn't already happened. These huge committees that built the FHIR standard and the OMOP, like we would be insane to act like those don't exist, which is something that— Jessica Talisman, who you mentioned before, is always saying, there are experts, there are experts who specialize in this. And so it's like, why would you reinvent the wheel with how knowledge is governed or what's a taxonomy? These things are separate objects and they're built in a separate pipeline and these ways of working. And similarly, in the niche of healthcare, you'd be crazy to not leverage the benefit of the fact that OMOP had a taxonomist in that room going, no, we're not going to do it that way. So much of the hard problems have already been thought through and solved. Why not go to the 80% and then be like, okay, and where might this wiggle room exist? That's how I view it.
Yeah. So we're doing, we're doing something where we're building out a product for media effectively, um, for a customer and we've worked with them for a while. And so we're effectively grabbing data from a large number of publishers.
