This is an I Heart Podcast hey, it's Angela Yee. I just got back from Turks and Caicos where I celebrated one of my best friend from high school's birthdays and we had the most stunning Airbnb villa. I mean it was a modern, newly renovated house that had nearly 360 panoramic views of the ocean. We had our very own family sized pool and the pleasure of enjoying the beauty of the sunrises and and the sun sets on multiple balconies. Doesn't that sound like a dream? It's no wonder why it has the Airbnb Guest Favorite stamp of approval. But one of the best parts. While I was out there living it up with my girls, my upstate home was booked on Airbnb and earning some extra cash from me with their Co host feature. You can team up with a trusted local co host who handles all the details like check ins, guest messaging so your place keeps working while you're away. You are now turning into Angela, but I call him Yee. Hey, what's up everybody? It's way up with Angela Yee. Today is also September 11th, 9 11. So let's just take a second. If you're having a day today. There's a lot of activity here in Manhattan. I actually have to drive past where 911 took place so traffic was a little crazy. But we have to give that grace today because it was definitely something that a lot of people were affected by. So got a flat tire today. So dealing with that also. But here I am. We have a great guest joining us today. He's a New York Times best selling author. His name is Shaka Senghor and he has a book out called how to Be A Proven Guide to Escaping Life's Hidden Prisons. So this is not just for people who have been incarcerated. It's for people who have their own self imposed prisons that they're living in. He also wrote that book Righting youg Wrongs and he was on Oprah. He recently was on Joe Rogan. But just amazing. I love Shaka. He's from Detroit and he really, really is somebody that I find to be quite inspirational. We are going to start the show off with some love and some positivity. We're going to shine a light. 800-292-5150. I have a friend of mine who I'm so proud of and I want to shine a light on her. I just saw this article on a new venture that she is gonna be doing and we'll be discussing that when we come back. But who do you wanna spread some love to? Call us up. It's way up. Turn your lights on y'. All. Turn your lights on. Spreading love to those who are doing greatness. Shine a light on em. Shine a light on em. It's time to shine a light on em. All right, it's way up with Angela Yee. Happy Thursday. It's time to shine a light. And today I wanna shine a light on my really, really good friend Ida Rodriguez. You know her as a comedian, but also as a. Also as an actress. And she is now going to be starring opposite Alicia Pascual Pena in a new indie dramedy. And that is from director Nicole Gomez Fisher. So shout out to her. She actually has been shooting in New York and she'll be shooting in Puerto Rico later this year. It's in the aftermath of a hurricane as a Brooklyn artist who's played by Ida and her daughter embark on a last wish road trip across Puerto Rico with their terminally ill matriarch. And that's when they uncovered deep family secrets. She posted excited to share. I'll be starring in and producing a new dramedy called Hurricane Seasons. Can't wait for y' all to see this story come to life. So shout out to my girl Ida, who is always doing amazing things, but not just that. She is so non industry. She literally, like, cannot stand playing the game and doing all of those things. Really one of the most authentic people who I know. Brilliantly hilarious. Now, Lamar, who do you want to shine a light on? I want to shine the light on the mother of my kids. We got five kids together. We co parent. I'm a truck driver. I'm always on the road. But she hold it down. So I just want to shine the light on her and I appreciate everything that she do. Five kids is no joke. Yeah, we got five boys, but we make it happen, though. Oh, my God. Five boys at that. The amount of energy in that house got to be wild. How did y' all get to a space of co parenting? I mean, we was together for a while, you know, since we was kids and, you know, we decided to co parent, but, you know, we make it work. Was it difficult at first? Nah, nah. We mature about the situation. So we just gotta, you know, do what we gotta do for these boys and raise them up right to make sure we in their life. Well, shout out to her and shout out to you for that. We love to hear successful co parenting stories. Most definitely. I appreciate it. All right, thank you for calling. Well, that was shine a light, 800-292-5150. If you couldn't get through, you could always leave a message and shine a light that way. And when we come back, we got your yeeti. Let's talk about young thug. He stays in the news. This time, Kodak Black is involved in a couple of different ways. We have Yeeti next his way up. Yo she bout to blow the lid up. Life's messy. This week on the podcast, I am sitting down with Jenny Garth, host of the iHeart podcast. I choose me to discuss the new Audible adaptation of the timeless Jane Austen CL classic Pride and Prejudice. This is not a trick question. There's no wrong answer. What role would I play? You know what? I can see you as Mr. Darcy. You got a little Colin Firth. Okay, that's really sweet. I appreciate that. But are you sure I'm not the dad? I'm not Mr. Bennett. Here, listen to Earsay the Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club on the iHeartradio app or wherever you get your podcasts off this spot. Let's get it. Oh, yeah. Angela's feeling that. Yeeti, come and get the tea. Oh, man, it's way up in Angela. Yee and man. What's up, Dan? I'm having quite a morning. How's it going, Ange? You struggling today? Very much. Let's get into some of this. Yeeti. Now, Kodak Black people were saying that he was drinking Lean, and his attorney is saying the video of him that people were concerned about that was making the rounds on social media, where it looks like he's drinking promethazine, which is cough syrup, was actually not that. And apparently his lawyer is saying it was just a prank. Here's what Kodak Black sounded like in that video. I don't know if that's a good prank for Kodak to be playing. No, I actually met his attorney, Bradford Cohen before, so. But he says that, you know, according to him, Kodak was just trolling people. Now, Boosie and Kodak had a back and forth because apparently, you know, Kodak feels like. Kodak feels like Boosie should have spoken up about Young Thug. Well, Boosie said Kodak believe me, when it's time to speak on a situation, I' ma go speak. But it's business. I get a bag to speak on these situations and believe me, somebody coming with it. You wrong. I shouldn't have energy at all for this ish with what I'm doing going through. And you must be still mad about my remarks about you let that ish go and admit you regret it now your career been downhill ever since. So now the two of them had a back and forth and Boosie told him get off the drugs and go get you some help. What do you think? He's not wrong. Boosie's not wrong. Boosie got a lot going on too, by the way. Like, I'm sure he's not thinking about like let me talk about this man's situation. So I thought that whole exchange was pretty interesting. Now in another story dealing with Kodak, there's another lead call now with Mariah. Mariah decided scientist is telling Young Thug that Kodak was trying to holler at her. Here is what it sounded like. Hey yo, me coming at you don't mean all this dude come up come from up under his situation. But in the meantime, you know I've been up about you and I just can't put that direct. I love to come to some kind of time, you know, it's queen treatment only guess what I said, man, I got a man and I ain't going to get what I got. She first of all, I hate that these calls are leaking out because these are things that like you would never and I'm sure this probably really happened. I'm sure she's so embarrassed right now. Yeah. But let's also not forget that Kodak in 2019 reached out to Lauren London after Nipsey passed. Yeah, Kodak, he do not care. And you know, he's playing pranks right now in his car. Allegedly. Yeah, pranks. All right. Now Bad Bunny revealed the reason that he chose not to include the in his upcoming tour is because he's has fears that ICE will raid his shows. He told ID in an interview that was published yesterday. There were many reasons why I didn't show up in the US and none of them were out of hate. I performed there many times. All of the shows have been successful. All of them have been magnificent. I've enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the US but specifically for a residency here in Puerto Rico when we are an unincorporated territory of the US People from the US should come here to see the show. And he was concerned that ICE might organize outside his shows if he did include the US in his upcoming tour. He said Latinos and Puerto Ricans of the US could also travel here or to any part of the world. But there was this issue of, like, effing ICE could be outside. And it's something that we were talking about and very concerned about. Can you imagine? You're trying to do a show and then Ice rounds people up outside. That is awful. Awful that people didn't have a chance to experience that because of what's happening here. I also love that stance that he made, though. That's amazing, because you know how much money he would have made? Do you know how much money he brought into Puerto Rico? He bought so much money there. Hundreds of millions. I think that is something that is a great example for people to follow. I agree. All right, when we come back, about last night where we discussed what we did last night. I had a night last night, a morning this morning. Still trying to get through it, guys. Push through. It's way up. So about last night. His eye went down. All right, it's way up with Angela Yee. And it's time for About Last Night. Now, y' all know I've been working non stop. So last night I was actually getting lip service together. And T was Savage is coming up soon. Jocelyn is coming up soon. We had both of them last night. Everybody's in town for Fashion Week. You know, one thing that Jocelyn and I had a back and forth about was her Jocelyn's cabaret. I know y' all saw the viral clip where for $50,000, the women had to eat roaches. And I don't think I could do that for $50,000. Now, we asked everyone in the room last night if they could do it. I don't know if y' all was capping or what, but I'm gonna ask in this room right now, what do you think Dan, my producer, could do? No hesitation. You would eat a fat roach? Just do it. A pregnant roach. Close your eyes. Just do it. All right, Navy, if we. You know what? Never mind. I'm gonna ask him because he eats anything. I'm not even gonna ask him because Just one. Just one. You eat more than one. Those roaches were huge, though. And they were. I think I would throw. I don't know what I could do because I'm such a picky eater already. 50k, Ange. 50k. The cash is in front of you. 50k. Let's be honest though. You know me and you know how much I don't eat. Like, there's. I am my palette for things that I don't even like. The consistency of it is so hard for me. I don't know if I could pull it. And you have to, like, chew it. You can't hold your nose. You got to swallow everything. $50,000, a big fat roach. You said anybody would do it. Like, there's nobody that's going to say no. You think that nobody would turn that down. I think you have to be like elite rich. Could you put. If I could put hot sauce on it. No, just it's fine how it is. And it's rough. You can't cook it. Could I 50k even matter? Some flour, some egg flour, breadcrumbs, Right? Because people do eat things like crickets in other places, people eat escargot. That's snails. I love escargot. That's good. See, that's what I'm saying. This is easy for you. I don't eat stuff like that. Stuff like that and roaches are two very different things. There's a lot of things that I don't eat. Like, I don't eat rabbit. I'm not eating rabbit. How about things just like steak? I don't even eat seafood. Yeah, that's your fault. That's what I'm saying. But that's why this is in particularly hard for me. Like, because it's a my. I'm so ridiculously, like, just the thought of things make me disgusted. I think 99.9% of people would do it. 50k's in front of you. Here's a roach. Oh, no, man. And I'm from Brooklyn. You know, we've seen a lot of roaches. All right, well, I want to see what you guys think. 800-292-5-150. Call us up. Would you eat a roach? And I'm not blaming y' all because I wish I could say yeah, and I would try, but I don't know if I could get it down. I don't know if I could. What if it was still alive, too? You close your eyes. 800. Do it. 2925150. Do you think you guys could eat a roach? Remember that show fear factor for $50,000? That's 800-292-5150. Call us up more way up with Angela Yee on now. You know who it is. Yeah. It's way up in Angel. Angela Yee. And today we were having this conversation based off of Lip Service. We filmed Lip Service last night. Jocelyn was on and on Jocelyn's Cabaret. One of the challenges for $50,000 was the women had to eat a roach. I can't do it. I'm just being honest. Like, I would love to sit here and be like, yes, for $50,000, I would eat a big fat roach. No worries. Now, Dan, you said you could do it. No hesitation. Navy said he would do it for $100. So that was interesting. But we want to hear from you guys. For $50,000, would you eat a roast? And I'm not talking about, like, a little tiny, you know, full size wings and all. Fine. Full size roast that could glide through the air. No hesitation. Potentially pregnant. We can't even. But it's a fat roach. Whatever. We want to know, can you do it? Still alive. 800-292-5150. Patricia, would you eat a roach for 50K? Hell no. I wouldn't do it for a million dollars right in front of me. Not doing it. Nope. Not for a million. Okay, now a million dollars. I might. I'm not for a million dollars. I'm not doing it. Money does not mean that much to me for me to be eat a damn roach. Wow. Are you a picky eater in general or just the idea of the roach? Yes, yes, I'm a very picky. See, you're like me. I can't eat nothing. Thought of things makes me want to gag. Yes, I'm like you. All right, well, thank you for calling. You're welcome. Hey, Remo, how are you? I'm good. What's going on? How are you? I'm good, thank you. Would you eat a roach alive and fat. Legs up in the air. I'mma eat that roach like it's the last supper. Ooh. Oh, my God. And I'm a picky eater. I don't even eat seafood. I don't even eat hamburgers. But I'll eat that roach like it's the last supper. Okay, I'm not mad at that. Listen, for 50k, I'm starving. Give me anything. All right, thank you. Thank you. Have a good one. Hey, Kia, would you eat a roach for $50,000? Absolutely. No way. No way. The money sounds good, but it just wouldn't happen. I do it. I got nauseous when y' all were saying, and I'm like, who wants to eat a roach for 50 grand? That's disgusting. You think your kids would do it? My daughter said she would definitely do it. And my 6 year old said he would do it, but he had to put it on the grill and cook it. No, you can't do that. It's got to be fat and raw. You know, kids eat anything too. This is the time you start training them. I'm getting nauseous now. Okay. All right. I'm sorry. Well, thank you for calling. Thank you, you guys. I listen to you every day. I appreciate it. Thank you. Have a good one. Hey, Andy. Hey. Hey, would you eat a roach for $50,000? Hell no. I would stay broken and broke. Hell no. I'm throwing my guts out. That's what I'm saying. I was trying to tell Jocelyn. I was like, I don't think I could do it. She was like, 50K. Jocelyn lost her rabbit ass mind. They were in this room trying to convince me that I'm crazy for not wanting to do it. And I don't think I could do it. I'm glad you're with me. Crazy. I'll be crazy. Hi, my name's Crazy. Hell no. Okay. Oh, Dan, you think she's bugging? Bugging? She's a buggin. Pun intended. I ain't bugging. All right. Thank you for calling. You got it. All right, Dancy. I'm not crazy. A lot of people said they wouldn't do it. I don't believe it. Okay. I really don't. And money doesn't move. Some people, they don't care how much money the money's in front of you. $100 million. It don't even matter more for me. All right, well, anyway, when we come back, we got you a yeeti. This week on the podcast, I am sitting down with Jenny Garth, host of the iHeart podcast. I choose me to discuss the new audible adaptation of the timeless Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice. This is not a trick question. There's no wrong answer. What role would I play? You know what? I can see you as Mr. Darcy. You got a little Colin Firth. Okay, that's really sweet. I appreciate that. There's truth in the room. From industry shade to all the gossip out to met Angela's spilling at yeeti. It's way up with Angela Yee. And it's time for your Yeeti. And let's talk about Neo. He was on Kai Sonat's Mafia Thon 3 stream, and one of the things that he talked about was his love life, of course. I think that's always the top of a conversation. He's in his polyamorous relationship. He has four women that move with him regularly. Here's what he had to say about different arguments and how do you get past that? If one gets you mad, are you mad at everybody else? I try not to do that. It's the same thing as y' all are friends. Like, if he pissed you off and you just pissed off. So, like, you not gonna respond to him the way chilling, Right? The same thing with the same thing with them. He also says that what he does is what's best for him, what's best for his kids and his tribe. He said, I was married before to one woman. It didn't go well. I made my mistakes, and they got divorced, and so people got hurt. He said he wasn't gonna lie ever again about anything. And as far as why these four women are complimenting him so well, here's what he said. One is a little more serious than everybody else. She's the reliable one I have, the one that I laugh with all the time. Everything is funny all day. It's just what she does. I have my rider. If I was getting jumped, she'd jump in and help me. And then I have my eclectic. She's the dancer. She's, you know, she's my artist, you know, so everybody has their own thing. My girlfriends. That's what it sounds like, right? They each have a different role. I am sorry. There's a lot of Guys in this room, I know y' all can't navigate four women. I'm happy with my one right. Can you imagine having to deal with all of that? Nope. Cause as much as you mess up, you know what I'm saying? She has to let you know. Damn. What are you doing? Imagine four women being like that. Gang up on you. What are you doing? Oh, my God. All right, now, on the flip side of things, Summer Walker at the MTV Video Music Awards was there with a much older man, and she had some things to say to let people understand what's going on with her. She was streaming live, and one person was like, you don't need a sugar daddy, because you know you're doing pretty well on your own as an artist. Here's what she said. You don't need a sugar daddy. You are your own sugar daddy. I don't care if I got my own money. I'm sick of paying for my own. My money is mine, your money is mine. Two different points of view here, ladies and gentlemen. But, you know, people are doing whatever works for them in their own relationships. And the hearing for Diddy's quest for an acquittal or new trial has been set. That court hearing is going to be taking place September 25th in Manhattan. Now, his attorneys are asking the judge to either throw out the conviction or give him a new trial. Federal prosecutors are saying that Diddy does not deserve a new trial or acquittal because there was more than sufficient basis to support his conviction on the two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. Now, the court hearing on Diddy's request will come a week before he's scheduled to be sentenced. So that sentencing is October 3rd. So again, that's going to be September 25th. Is that hearing. Those hearings haven't been going well. But what I will say is, you know, he got. He got charged with and convicted of way less things than people thought that he would. All right, well, that is your Yeeti. When we come back, we have your under the radar stories. These are the stories that you need to know about, but they may be flying under the radar. One of them is about using your phone and hemorrhoids and the risk and that. I know y' all be on that toilet scrolling, sending out memes to people. Well, maybe you need to get off. All right, it's way up. Check the news. I got news this in the news that relates to you. These stories are flying under the radar. It's way up in Angela Yee. And it's time for the under the radar stories. Now, this story is for anybody who sits on the toilet for a long period of time while using their phone. That's where a lot of people go to get some peace. Right. And according to a report, there are a higher rate of hemorrhoids when you bring your phone into the bathroom. That's. Has anybody here ever had a hemorrhoid? No. It's very personal, so. Yes. Have you? No, I haven't. That's why I can answer it easily. I feel like you have and that's why you don't want. Next question. All right. Well, it's very uncomfortable from what I've heard. And you know, people sit on there and they use the toilet and send out memes. I already know when my man is on the toilet, I'm gonna get a whole bunch of memes. Boop, bloop, bloop. And yeah, that's. So be careful. That's all I'm saying. Don't stay on the toilet longer than you have. It does make sense. All right. Now, New Mexico is the first state to offer universal childcare. That's the first state in the country to guarantee universal childcare to families who reside there. And families will be eligible for infants and toddlers starting November 1st. No matter what your income is. This is a groundbreaking initiative. And this is going to save over $12,000 per child annually with this initiative. So that's huge. That's a reason to move to New Mexico because child care is ridiculously expensive. Every state should get on that trend. What do we have to do? I'm not going to say it, you know, wait till the next election. That's. And that's why elections matter, guys. All right, now let's talk about this whole Charlie Kirk situation. They are saying that the suspect who shot and killed Charlie Kirk is a college age male who blended in well. So when they say blended in well, to me that means he's white because it would have definitely stuck out if he wasn't because it was definitely in Utah where there were a whole lot of white people. The Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner has asked the public to stop harassing the two persons of interest who were cleared as suspects. So we've seen pictures. One was like an older man. They had him on the ground, so it's not him. But I guess people are still harassing him. There's been more than 130 tips about the shooting that were sent to the FBI. The FBI does have images of the suspect, but they have not released them at this time, they did say that as they're trying to track down who this person is, if they need help, then they release that to the public. But for now, I guess they're working and tracking the suspected shooter's movements. Using that security footage. The shooter moved to the the other side of the building after the shooting, jumped off of the building and ran off the campus into a neighborhood. From the roof? Yes, from the roof. They moved to the other side. So that is the update I saw. You know, Charlie Kirk has been trending. There's a whole lot of different emotions about how people feel, and there's some lack of emotion about how people feel about his shooting. But 911 callers have been calling in saying that they saw the suspected shooter on campus, and there is currently a manhunt underway. So we will keep you updated. And that is your under the radar. We do have the way up mix at the top of the hour, and we have New York Times bestselling author and resilience expert Shaka Senghor joining us. His book how to be free is a proven guide to escaping life's hidden prisons. You are gonna absolutely love this conversation. It's way up. Way up. Just like to talk like they Angela Yee. Like they Angela Yee. Man, she's spilling it all. This is yeeti Way up. It's way up with Angela Yee. And it is time for your yeeti. But first, a quick update. I know earlier and under the radar, we were talking about the suspect in the Charlie Kirk shooting. Well, the feds have released an image of a person of interest, and they are asking for the public's help in identifying this person in connection with that fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. So you can see he's a white male. He's got a shirt with the American flag on it. He's got on some sunglasses. And so that is the latest update. Earlier, they hadn't released that image. Yes, Dan? No. Okay. All right. Now let's get into some Yeeti. Now, Angel Reese is definitely. There's some comments that she made that people felt like she shouldn't have made. She told the Chicago Tribune that this guy can't rely on Courtney to come back at the age that she's at. She wants the front office to add a younger championship tested guard. She also criticized the team's recent free agency and said she would consider a different direction if Chicago didn't improve. Well, because of that, the sky suspended for ha for half a game because she made statements that were detrimental to the team publicly and then also ruled her out for the second half that night due to a back issue. Well, on Wednesday's episode of the Good follow podcast, Angel McCaughrey, who was a WNBA legend, had some things to say. You know, she does know Angel Reese. They went to the same high school. Even though she's older than her. And here's what she told Angel Reese she should do in order to get back into a leadership position and get. Get back the trust of her teammates. You're not the only one having a bad season. Your teammates are having a bad season, too. But here's the difference. They don't have million dollar deals, endorsement deals. You're so blessed, one of your teammates might not even see $50,000. You know what I would do, Angel? I would get one of my endorsements, say, give me an extra hundred thousand so I can give all my teammates 10 just to show them I care. Okay. I mean, I think. What do you think about that as a. She's a vet. I hear you. But I also think that, like, money is a superficial fix. It's not like fixing the problem. It's just like paying you off type of thing. I get it. But sometimes people can be like, okay, if you want to apologize, that's how people always apologize. Like, you know, here's some money, here's some gifts as a step towards somebody. I mean, I don't know that that's a fix it. Because you can't just do that and then nothing else after that. It has to be like, incorporated into, like, I just want to apologize. Because the truth is she is making more money than everybody else. Yeah, that's a fact. But it's kind of like having a job and being able to deal with a lot more if you're getting paid more rather than, you know, I don't know, it was just a suggestion that Angel McCaughtry had. I don't know if that's a fix because it feels like it's a lot deeper than that. All right, Speaking of fixing things, Keith Lee is a resident of Texas now, and he shared that he and his family had been sick for several weeks. They didn't know what was going on. You know him as a very famous food critic. A former MMA fighter, He has over 15 million followers on on TikTok and over 2.6 million on Instagram. Well, they moved to Dallas after living in Vegas for 10 years, and now they are having some issues. Apparently, even though the home was inspected three to four times, they didn't Realize there were some issues in the bathroom. Here's what he said. When we moved in, we got an inspection. We got like, three or four different inspections. Not once was there anything wrong with our bathroom. Right. Since we've been in here, we saw a crack that went from our shower over to the wall. And when we had our cleaning ladies come, she noticed it was mold inside that crack. So we had somebody come and dig up where our tub was to see what's under there. And look what's under here. All that black stuff, mold. We've been getting sick for the last three weeks. That is so annoying. And I want to say, when people are doing their bathrooms over, if anybody's renovating, you have to get the proper materials that are waterproof, because if not, you are definitely a thousand percent gonna get mold. That's also on the inspectors, though. Sometimes you have to cut open things, though, to see, because a lot of times people who are renovating homes, when they're trying to do these quick flips, they do things that can be hidden. And if your inspector's not gonna cut a hole or see that there was a crack and then that crack was, you know, getting bigger, if there was no crack, they would have never seen the mold. And so people can hide things like that. So unfortunately for him, you know, that's going to be expensive. I saw the pictures of them, but it's something you have to fix because people can get really sick from that. And I think it's just deceitful that people try to flip these houses and sell them and not take care of these root issues. Because black mold can cause things like eczema, asthma, infections, respiratory issues, all kinds of things. All right, well, that is your yeeti. When we come back, we have Ask Ye 800-292-5150. Call us up. Any question you have, I'm here to help you out. Again, that's 800-292-5150. Call us up. Ask Yee is next. Whether it's relationship or career advice, Angela's dropping facts. This is Ask Yee. What's up? It's way up with Angela Yee. And it's time for ask yee. 800-292-5150 is a number any question you have. We are here to help you out. And today we have Sam on the line. What's up, Sam? Hi. How are you? I'm doing good. How about you? I just need some advice. Okay, I'm listening. So I was at the grocery store, and the guy in front of me paid for my groceries and nothing happened. I gave him a number, nothing like that. But, you know, just went home and I was talking to my boyfriend about my day and I brought it up to him and now he's mad. Now, how would you feel if a woman paid for his groceries? I wouldn't be to able. Like, as long as he doesn't talk to her or get her number, he's like, I'm fine with that. More money for me. I don't always think that people have intentions, but that doesn't mean that they don't. And so while you might innocently have looked at it that way, as I would have too, I think that you have to take into consideration that he feels away about it. And just because, you know, it was innocent doesn't mean that he doesn't feel away. So sometimes I think you have to acknowledge, okay, I had no idea. I wasn't even looking at it the way that you're looking at it. And I understand where you're coming from, but do you understand where he's coming from? I think it's being immature, but I kind of do too. I don't think he's being unreasonable. It's just a difference in how we view things. And I do think that men and women look at things differently. You're just looking at it like somebody did something nice. I'm not interested. I got a man who cares. Save myself some money. He's looking at it like, man, somebody feels like they could just come up to my woman and buy her groceries. Which means that it looks like he could just take her on a date now. Now, you know, moving forward, if this were to happen again, what would you do? I won't tell him. I'm joking. Yeah, maybe you shouldn't have. And listen, and you can tell him, I did not have no malice. There was no bad intentions. I wasn't thinking nothing of it. But I understand where you're coming from. And in the future, I will for sure take your feelings into consideration and make sure that this doesn't happen again or just won't tell you. Yeah. And if you don't tell him it didn't happen. No, I'm kidding. I feel like you with a lot of groceries, like, extra expensive, looks expensive. So I was like, okay, I'll take it. Right, you. Like, I should have got more. Yeah, no, I feel you. Right. For real. I would have known. He's probably insecure. Does he normally give you. Because to me, it is a little bit of a sign of insecurity. It's a thing about respect, though. So it's like all of those different things mixed in and sometimes it could be indicative of something else going on in the relationship. I don't know if you'll have other issues. We don't. And that's why I was so surprised. I'm just like, you don't trust me. Like, I thought we can laugh about this. Well, I think it's not that he don't trust you, it's he don't trust that guy. But I do think, you know, relationships are about compromise. And while you may be like, it ain't nothing, it's no big deal. You're not about to beef with your man over some groceries. They're right. I'll apologize and cook dinner and we can with those groceries that that man paid for. Free groceries. Free dinner. All right. Well, thank you for calling and good luck. Thank you. Yee. All right. Well, that was ask ye 800-292-5150 just in case you couldn't get through. You could leave a message and ask a question that way. And when we come back. Oh, man. But are you sure I'm not the dad? I'm not Mr. Bennett. Here, listen to Earsay the Audible and iHeart Audio Book Club on the iHeartradio app or wherever you get your podcasts. We about to do this. One of the most famous women in radio. We're talking about Angela Yee. You're way up with Angela Yee. Please believe that. What's up? It's way up with Angela Yee. I'm here with my guy, Maino. And of course, New York Times best selling author Shaka Sangar is here with us. You have a new book, how to be Free. So congratulations on that. Thank you. Thank you. I'm super excited. Thank you. All right, so this book is a proven guide to escaping life's hidden prisons. First of all, I want to say this. You did Joe Rogan's podcast. Yeah. And I saw that there were some people that, of course, there was some backlash because I think about different audiences. Right. Hearing your story for the first time, because I feel like we know from when Oprah had you on. Yeah. I feel like, you know, Joe Rogan's fans may not have all been privy to hearing that. Yeah, I mean, you know, the people in the comment section think I wrote this new book for them because they're trapped in their own hidden prisons of being haters and. And judgmental. Like the snap judgment. Right. Why would they be coming at somebody like you? I think a lot of people get stuck in my old story. Right. So I went to prison for 19 years, seven years of solitary confinement. And over the last 15 years, I've had an incredible amount of success. And so people don't think that when you've made a poor decision that you're actually deserving of any type of success. Right. When I talk to young people, what I always say is just like, you know, you have to own your own narrative, otherwise the world will try to tell you who you are. The reason so many don't own their own narrative, they don't even recognize the way that these hidden prisons show up in their lives like trauma. So when I was writing about my brother, my brother was murdered in 2021. And I was sitting there and I was watching my mother go through this grieving process, and I started feeling this overwhelming sense of guilt. And so I couldn't even fully grieve for my brother. Because what I realized in that moment, I made somebody else's mother feel like that. And so that was my hidden prison, was that I couldn't really grieve. And what I ended up doing is I ended up writing a letter to the person responsible for murdering my brother. And through that process of just exercising that emotion, I started to kind of free myself up and develop this deep sense of gratitude for the experience I had with my brother. So the unlock for me was gratitude is how I navigated grief. Right now, I'm talking to New York Times best selling author, Shaka Senghor. You know, people talk about forgiveness a lot because you wrote that letter, right? And sometimes people are like, how could you forgive somebody who did something like that? But you. I listened to you on Oprah, and you talked about the forgiveness that you received. And a lot of times we want forgiveness from people, and we appreciate that. But then when it's time for us to turn around and forgive somebody, that's a hard thing to do. Absolutely. In the book, one of the things that I talk about is I received a letter from the guy who shot me. You know, I got shot when I was 17 years old. This is three decades later. He's in prison now. He's actually been in prison, but we never was at the same prison. And my initial reaction wasn't the thoughtful person that believes in redemption. I'm really respected in prison. It don't take much for me to just be like, Grandma, put $1,000 on your book. Take care, dude. Right. And what I realized in that moment was like, this is the universe saying, what do you really believe about second chances? What do you really believe about forgiveness? And so I started actually to write him a letter back. And then I decided to actually write my mother, who I was in the process of healing our relationship with. And I realized I didn't owe him a letter. I accepted the apology. I accepted that. And for me, it's really like forgiveness was, for me, it wasn't really about him. Right. You know what I mean? And then so with my mom, that became more important. Forgiveness is very complex because I thought I had forgave my mother, and then what I realized, I forgave her with conditions. Cause sometimes we think that, oh, I forgave you, but then you do one thing that I dislike. And now I take 15 steps back. Shaka Sengora is here with us. How to be Free is his new book. He's a New York Times bestselling author. You also know his amazing book, Righting My Wrongs. You've seen him on with Oprah With Joe Rogan. Now he's here. We got more with him when we come back. It's a proven guide to escaping life's hidden prisons. It's Way Up More Way up with Angela Yee on now. You know who it is. You know who it is. What's up? It's Way up with Angela Yee. I'm here with my guy Maino and we're talking to Shaka Senghor, New York Times best selling author. He's a resilience expert. He has a new book out right now called how to Be Free. Managing your anger is a large part of what you talk about in this book. So what are some tips that you have for how to handle that? I started journaling and it's what I call active journaling. You write it down so you can be clear about it it. But then what are the action steps you're going to take to heal from it? And for me, I would write when I was in solitary, whenever I would like find myself like really, really angry. Like my neighbor blew the power out one time. I'm literally writing my journal like yo, when I get out I'm a shank dog, blah blah, you know what I mean? But then I would go back and read it because that was the active part. And I was reading it one day and I was like, this sounds like a madman. This is not how I see myself. But this is really who I've become, right? And so I knew like if I wanted to be a different person, I had to heal that person. You talk about the keys to releasing anger, right? Yeah. Write down your anger, identify primary emotion, create a counter mantra and then meditate to release anger. So no, just thinking about working through that because what I love is at the end of each chapter you are giving people just really the tools to dig deeper. You call it digging deeper? Absolutely. Yeah. And what I love about the digging deeper chapters is you notice there's like bit a little, little door at the top. And the door is because I wanted people to know that you can access this anytime you can come in and out because that's life, right? Sometimes you're going to get it right and sometimes you're going to take a little step back. And it's like once you take that step back, just know that you can go back to these tools and it'll help release you from that, that hidden prison. Right now I'm talking to New York Times best selling author Shaka Senghor. Now another thing that was really impactful in your life Was marriage. We see Liz in here too. Now, one thing you were gifted was mirrors. The elder who gifted the mirror said to you, in marriage you become a mirror to your partner. What you reflect is what you will receive in return. If you reflect love, patience or understanding, you will get that back. But if you reflect anger, resentment or indifference, that too will come back to you. A happy marriage is built not just on love, but on the reflections you choose to create every day. And you talk about love being an active choice. Yeah, absolutely. And this. And it's marital love, but it's also self love and it's also relational love and friendship and all those things are like really the primary drivers in life to me. And it all comes back to self love because that's what eradicates self doubt, negative self talk. And when you're, when you're in relation with anybody, like you're only going to get out of it what you put into it, right? And it doesn't mean it's like perfect. Like sometimes that mirror is dirty and dusty and scraped up and you gotta clean it off and you gotta get back to like, okay, why did we show up in each other's life in the first place? And I'm fortunate and lucky to have a brilliant, beautiful wife and that makes me happy. Lastly, I want to end with this part. You said the one thing I refuse to do was get stuck in a loop of negativity. The moment a negative thought surfaced, I counted it with positive affirmations. These are like real things, you know, that we can do. You said, I meditated on gratitude, grounding myself in the blessings I already had rather than the challenges I faced. It's all about a commitment to shifting my mindset. It wasn't just about pushing through. It was about creating a foundation of self belief that allowed me to see possibilities instead of obstacles and to keep moving forward with hope and purpose. And I think that's impactful. Well, Shaka, thank you so much for joining us. I really appreciate you having me. And I know you're all over on tour so people can check you out, right? Pull up on me. You know, they're looking for this person of interest. The alleged shooter had political messages, allegedly on the equipment that was brought to the murder scene. So, you know, it's too early for me to say what's really happening, so I don't want to, but I'm just taking a look at what's being reported right now. But anyway, I want to thank you guys.
