#007 Go Big In Your Business MPLS Edition

Cheryl argues entrepreneurs fail because they try to please everyone instead of taking a clear stance. She challenges you to post something today that takes a stand on a topic relevant to your tribe, even if it attracts haters, because bold positioning attracts raving fans and cuts through the noise.

Cheryl here today, and I am at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota. So I am here for an event. I'm also going to be fulfilling a lifelong ambition of mine to visit Paisley Park, Prince's recording studio, once and for all in my life since I've been a fan since I was 12. So I am going to be taking a bit of a sojourn to do that. But what I wanted to do was jump on here and do this quick video for you today, not live, because I'm gonna be at the event at the time that I would normally go live, so I just wanted to jump on here real quick. I'm inspired by the Mall of America, and here's why: because this is a gigantic mall that knows how to go big, okay? There's an amusement park in the middle, it's got a roller coaster, it's got a Ferris wheel, it's just enormous. It's got these huge rotundas and these atriums, and people are walking around the mall and getting their exercise and what have you. So I'm inspired as I'm walking around the Mall of America— I'm just here kind of getting a coffee— that this is a mall that knows how to go big. How do we learn something from the Mall of America? How do we go big in our businesses? And I wanted to share with you just something real quick that you could do today that would help you to go big. If you feel like you're struggling to attract more clients, you're struggling to make a name for yourself, you're struggling to rise above the noise of everything that's going on online, what may be missing is that you're not going big enough. And by going big, what I mean by that is You know, say something that takes a stand. You know, take a stance on a topic. Say something controversial. Have a point of view. Do something bold. Do something out of the ordinary. That would be my challenge for you. Even today, that's something that you could do is do something that's out of the ordinary. I'm doing something out of the ordinary by traveling here, right? What is something that you can do? I'm not saying you have to travel to Minnesota, but what is it that you can do where you live today to do something a little bit different kind of work outside of your comfort zone, not sort of take the same path and pattern that you do every single day. How do you mix it up? What is something that you could do to maybe do something that seems a little scary to you? I was actually talking to a client the other day about video, about content. We were working through some strategy, and I said, you know, one of the things that I'm noticing is that you're you're worried about being liked by everyone. And she goes, oh my God, that is exactly what it is. And I said, the problem with that is you're not going to— everyone's not going to like you. And, and we don't want everyone to like us. What we're trying to do as we create content and put ourselves out there and go big, um, it, you know, is to take— we really want people who are our ideal audience to be attracted to us, to follow us, and to become raving fans. But conversely, We also want to, we want all the people who are not our tribe, the people who will never buy from us, to be repelled by us. We want them to be repelled by us. I know it sounds weird. We're not here to make friends. Business is about, again, putting out a service or a product that can help people achieve a specific, you know, change or transformation and getting paid what we deserve to be paid to do it. It's not really about making friends, but I think so many of us are maybe a little bit insecure. And we want so badly for everyone to like us. And because we want everyone to like us, we don't take a bold stand on anything. And we try to say the right things to everyone. And what that does is it just makes you— it doesn't make you stand out. It doesn't make you bold and big and different and unique. Right. Which are the very characteristics that you need in order to build your personal brand, to build your business. And to be able to really be profitable, right? You do have to take a stand. So my challenge to you today is to take a stand on something. Maybe the challenge is, you know, you want to do some videos and maybe you could go on video today and do a Facebook Live. Maybe you could do a recorded video like I'm doing today and post it on your Facebook page with a particular stand that you have on a particular topic in your industry. Maybe it is a little bit controversial. That's okay. It's gonna be pushing you outside of your comfort zone. And I— trust me, you're gonna— and you may get some people, you might get some haters, you might get some people who say, no way, you're off your rocker. But you're gonna get a subset of people who are like, good for you, I love how you're standing up for that particular thing. You know, for me as an example, as a video marketing strategist, I really believe wholeheartedly that we, you know, we have experience We have excuses that we want to hang on to because we're afraid of putting ourselves out there, because we all know that we can do videos with just our smartphones. It's not about the equipment. We like to hang on to those excuses, but the truth is that there are no excuses. We can all do videos. There's something much, much deeper at play, and it's usually in our hearts, in our heads, psychological, and these limiting beliefs around our ability to say stuff that people, you know, care about. Again, it's, it's, it's about confidence, it's about technology, it's about the time, all of that. And so my stand for entrepreneurs is that in order to build a profitable business today, if you want to scale social media, you've got to do video. And so I take a stand for entrepreneurs to do video in a simple and efficient way that is from the heart, that is again speaking you know, from a place of authenticity. What's your stand for your people, for your tribe? What is the stand that you're taking for your ideal audience? Go on video today or write a blog post or write a status update on Facebook about that. Do something bold today that helps you to stand out from all of the rest of the people who are doing the same thing that you're doing. Trust me, that is going to go a long, long way. Going big in your business is is going to go a long way to helping you to differentiate and to stand out and really rise above the noise of the online community, which is becoming very saturated. Okay? So take a cue from the Mall of America and go big today. That's my challenge to you. Let me know in the comments below if you're watching this on the— well, if you're watching the replay, type replay, and also let me know where you're watching from. I always like to go back and take a look at where everyone is you're watching from, and let me know in the comments what you did today that was bold, that was different, that was outside of your comfort zone. Go and do it. Okay, have a great day, you guys, and I'll see you in the next episode of Personal Brand Breakthrough. Go out there and be bold. Go big.
