#017 Getting Started With Instagram Video Chat

Sheryl Plouffe shows how to use Instagram's video chat feature, which lets up to four people join a split-screen call. She walks through finding the paper-airplane icon, selecting a contact, and tapping the video-camera icon to start. Video builds rapport and trust with your audience faster than email or text.

Welcome to Personal Brand Breakthrough. It's Sheryl here. And yeah, I'm just finishing up a video. Actually, I just finished a video about Instagram that was inspired by one of my mastermind students. So I just finished publishing that not too long ago. So today we're going to still talk about Instagram. There's so much to talk about. Let's get started. So every Thursday at 2 PM Eastern time, I go live right here on my Facebook page, and then later in the day, I publish this same broadcast to my YouTube channel. So I hope that you'll go there and subscribe as well. Today we're talking Instagram video chat. Last week, you may have seen the video that I did about Instagram's love of IGTV, or Instagram TV. I did it from a school bus. True. So today we're continuing the theme with Instagram. Instagram video chat. And actually, just not too long ago, I tested the function with a friend of mine, a friend of mine's daughter, actually, and it worked beautifully. So what I really want to do is just give you a real quick tutorial to walk you through how you would utilize Instagram video chat. And what's exciting about this is that you can have up to 4 people chatting at the same time. So I'm going to take you through that in a moment. My name is Sheryl Plouffe. I am a video marketing strategist. And if you're new to me, I am really all about video. I'm all about how do we utilize video to build our brands and build our businesses. So I'm particularly interested in social media, obviously video production and just simplification, like making systems and strategies that work. So let's dive in. If you are on Instagram, which again, not everyone's niche or industry needs to be on it. Like, you don't need necessarily need to be on Instagram. I think the most important thing to consider is, is your audience on Instagram? If the answer to that is yes, then you know you have to be going all in on Instagram. There are so many people using Instagram. The feed, which is the feed of Instagram, is where you post your regular posts on Instagram. Then there's Instagram stories, and now Instagram video chat that we're talking about. Last week we talked about IG, uh, Instagram TV. So let's, um, take you through a brief tutorial on how you would utilize this. So what I've done is I've taken some snapshots here to walk you through this process. In the top right-hand side of this screenshot, you see where I've circled in green, there's like a little, it looks like a paper airplane icon. When you are on Instagram, what you'll do is you'll go up to that top right-hand side and look for the little airplane. You're going to click that, and once you click that, it's going to bring you to the people that you can chat with on Instagram. But, and in this case, what I'm going to do is I'm just going to show you an example with Alex Beaton, because Alex Beaton is the Instagram Stories queen. And, um, so we're going to use her as an example. So choose whoever it is that you want to video chat with. You can see I video chatted with Caitlin not too long ago. So choose whoever that is, and then what you'll do is, in this case I'm choosing Alex, you'll go to the top where the little video icon is next to the star, and I've circled it in green here. You click that, and then what will happen is that it will start to call that person for you, a video chat. When that person— now that person obviously has to be on Instagram to be able to see that you're video calling them, but let's presume that they answer. So what will happen is in that case with 2 people, you'll see a split screen. So you'll be on the top and then your, your person that you're calling will be on the bottom. But what you can do is you can call and add more people to the chat. So you can have up to 4 people on the screen at the same time. Video chatting. So that's pretty exciting. And I think this is a great function. I'm all about video and utilizing it in as many ways as possible personally, but from my standpoint, professionally, from a business standpoint for entrepreneurs, this can be really powerful where you can really be talking about a variety of different things. Anytime, anything that you would really seek cause to email someone about or or text message someone about, you can now do with video chat. So the reason why this is so powerful is because video is the closest thing we have to being there in person with someone. And there's nothing that really compares to the impact of video in terms of connection and building rapport and building that, that sense of camaraderie and likability and all of those wonderful qualities that using video can allow you to still have without being there in person. So I don't know if that I need to belabor the benefits of video. The whole world is going to video. There are statistics that show that by 2019, it's not that far away, they're saying 80% of all consumer internet traffic is going to be video. So you can— and you see that with the big platforms, you know, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, LinkedIn now doing video, Instagram going full wholeheartedly into it, right? All of these platforms are doing that for a reason. It's because that's how people want to now consume content and communication. So I would highly encourage you to give it a shot and let me know how it went. Just let me know in the comments, did you try the Instagram video chat and what was your experience? So I hope that's helpful for you today. Personal Brand Breakthrough every Thursday at 2 PM here on my Facebook page and also on my YouTube channel.
