Sheryl Plouffe shows how to save Facebook group threads to Collections for video ideas. She uses a real estate group example, explains why keeping the full comment chain matters, and compares it to manual copy-pasting into spreadsheets.
Facebook groups are a very rich place to find topics for your business and marketing videos. Sheryl Plouffe here, Video Strategist.
I help entrepreneurs and small business owners build their brand and business with video.
And in this video, I'm going to show you how to save Facebook group threads and why you would want to do that. If you know someone who uses Facebook groups or should be using Facebook groups more effectively, be sure to share this video out with them. I'm sure they'd appreciate it. Okay, let's get into it.
Let me set the premise for this demonstration. I'm using a public group here called Raise the Bar in Real Estate. What you'll probably find is that private groups tend to have more conversations, longer threads, more meaty questions, so to speak, but I didn't want to reveal the innards of a private group, so I'm using a public group. And I just chose real estate as the topic for this particular video. But the point is that when you are going through and you're part of a Facebook group and it's active, people are asking questions, it's very rich with ideas. And that's really what I call it. It's a video topic goldmine because people are asking questions like, how about this? What about that? How do I do this? If you are someone who can answer those questions, well, number one, you should likely be commenting on the thread and actually helping people within the group. But second to that, is there a way that you could use that as a video topic idea to create an actual video for social media? Let's say YouTube and Facebook and LinkedIn and Instagram and so on and so forth. And likely the question is yes. So what I'm encouraging you to do is to think about these threads, like look at this one, for example, from Marguerite. She says, have you ever lost your temper with a client? What was the reason and what was the outcome? Well, there are 32 comments on this thread, so if we expand this out, we can see there are a lot of different conversations and replies going on and ideas. You want to inject yourself in this conversation, but you also want to find a way to capture this entire thread so that you have the context to the conversation. When it comes time for you to create the video. That might be tomorrow. It might be a month from now, might be 6 months from now. But what I'm suggesting is that there's a way here that you can keep tabs on these rich gold mines of activity and questions and really inspiration. So if you go over to the 3 dots here on the right-hand side, the top right, you can see that it says save post. So we're going to save this post. And add it to a collection. I have a bunch of different collections here, but you'll create a collection and you can call this, you know, YouTube video ideas, right? Or Facebook video ideas or whichever is your core platform. Create. And now it says your item has been saved to your collection. Great. So now if I go over here to Click on the Facebook, bring yourself back to your main navigation menu. And if I go back to Saved, you will see that this particular post now has been saved to your YouTube video ideas collection. You'll see that up here on the top. So if I click on YouTube video ideas, you'll see that this is the collection for your ideas. And if I click on it once more, Brings me back to that entire thread. So this is how you would be able to keep track of ideas for videos without having to copy and paste each little, each little piece of conversation. And while you could do that, it's just a longer way to go about that, you know, to keep it in a document or to keep it in a spreadsheet. Or like, I personally use spreadsheets in my course and I provide that to clients. But you can create a document, whatever is going to be for you to keep track of these, this inspiration for video topics. You'll want to do that again. You could copy and paste certain pieces of it. However, you're losing the context of the entire conversation, and chances are there are some things in here that you could utilize, perhaps even in the video from a video elements point of view. Let's say you in 2 months from now create this video and you want to mention, you know, the inspiration for this particular topic. You could Command+Shift+4 on your keyboard. I'm using an Apple, I'm using a Mac, and I can screenshot this particular question like this. And I could use that as an element in the production of the video. I might want to mark out the name. Um, if it's a private group— this is a public group, so perhaps it's a little different— but if it's a private group, I would certainly mask out the name so that it's not visible. But what you can do is now utilize this actual screen capture as the inspiration for the video. Not only that, if you've got access to the entire thread, You could come down and do the same thing for a comment that someone made, and you can say, well, Ryan responded blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Or maybe you change the name, you know, you screen capture this, and now this becomes an element in the video production. Again, if it's a private group, I would change— I would either mask out the name. I would mask out both the name as well as the profile picture. I just think it's just a better way to do it, and that's really not the point. The point isn't to mention Ryan necessarily by name. The point is to get to the meat of the matter in terms of the text that he's written here in his response to this thread. So I want you to really start thinking about that. This is how to get organized. It's also a little bit about how to be thinking ahead to the production of your videos long-term. So I hope that's something that can be beneficial to you. I think if you start to create maybe one collection to start, you might find that it's really a great way to keep organized with all of your different video topics.
And that's what it's really all about, is the strategy behind making your business and marketing videos actually work for you. Hope you enjoyed this tip.
