Trim iPhone Video Directly In Camera Roll

Sheryl Plouffe shows how to trim videos in your iPhone Camera Roll by dragging the trim handles to set new start and end points, then saving as a new clip. She recommends pausing briefly at the start and end of each take to create clean trim points.

Sheryl Plouffe here, Video Strategist. I was speaking with a client this morning and she asked me, "How do I trim a video clip on my phone?" And I figured if she had this question, maybe you do too. So let me show you the easiest way to do this. This is for a video clip that you've recorded on your phone that the middle part's good, it's just that there may be something at the beginning and/or the end that you want out of the final version of your video. It could be clearing your throat, grabbing that water, stretching, you know, I'm always talking about get loose, you know, that kind of thing. You don't want to have that in the final version of your video. So I've mirrored my phone onto the screen so that you can see. I'm using an iPhone, admittedly, so if you have an Android, this may be slightly different, but the principle should be the same. You want to find the clip in question from your camera roll and hit the edit button. On the screen will be an edit button. You're not seeing it on my screen right now because I'm mirroring but there will be an edit button. So you click the edit button. Once you do that, you will see your timeline at the bottom, which is basically all the frames of your video, and you click on the black and white arrow on the left and it will turn yellow. Once it turns yellow, once this turns yellow, you can then take that to whichever part of the video you'd like. So you take it to the very beginning and you take it to the very end, and once you're complete— you've completed that, you hit done. And it will ask you, do you want to save it as a new clip? And you say yes. That's the safest way so that you don't lose your original file. One tip I can give you when you're recording your videos, make sure that you're giving yourself a pause at the beginning and at the end of your video so that there's an obvious place when you begin and when you end. It makes for a cleaner and more easy in and out point. In other words, an easier way to identify what where that little yellow bar will begin and where that little bar will end.
