4 Functions of Amygdala

Dr. Shiny Unsal breaks down the amygdala's four survival responses: fight, flight, freeze, and fall (fainting). She uses the analogy of a soldier guarding a castle to show how these automatic reactions show up in anger, avoidance, speechlessness, and feeling faint. Recognizing them helps you respond differently.
Hello everyone, my name is Shiny Unsal. I am the proud creator of Neuroshine Technology, The Shiny Minds Show, and I am your Neuroshine Coach. Are you ready to shine?
Come on, it's the shiny one, you got this! If you wanna go, can let you know what a Neuroshine Technology Coach does.
That person creates Neuroshine Moments for you so that combining those Neuroshine Moments, you can have more awareness and create a shiny mind for yourself. And that happens only when you know more about your mind and how it works. A big part of your mental world has something to do with your organ, brain, right? So you're thinking, what do you mean? Like I told my mind and brain are the same. They are not the same. Your mind is the energy and information flow. Your brain is the organ that allows you to have that. So when you— let me just show you. When you look at your brain, you will understand that this organ actually has some departments, and its departments together, they form your intelligence, your mental health, your functioning in life, and anything that you do, your mindset, your language, your behaviors, your relationships, and your quality of your life. When you look at your brain and divide the brain into 3 levels, you see primitive level, emotional level, and cognitive level. Today we're gonna talk about the primitive level. We're gonna talk about amygdala, and I'm going to teach you 4 functions of amygdala. Ready? Let's go. First function is fight. Your amygdala is your soldier. You know how you have a big castle and you need to have soldiers in front of your castle to protect the castle? That is your amygdala. Your amygdala is a soldier right there asking everybody for their identity, for their safety, and your amygdala is checking everyone's bags for any weapons if they are carrying. Okay, you get the idea. So amygdala is scanning the environment 6 times a second because it knows that it can be a threat. 6 times a second. Think about it. Your amygdala is ready to fight when there is a threat, when when there is danger, your amygdala, your soldier, is ready to fight. What does it mean and how does it show up in your everyday activities? Well, you're gonna find yourself reacting, defending, and offending, right? That's how it shows up. When you look at your relationships, your language and behaviors, if you find yourself reacting, getting angry, getting emotional, and not being able to control your behaviors, That's amygdala, and that's primitive part of your brain. Number 2 function of amygdala is flight. When amygdala looks at the danger and when it decides that it is too big, or it denies it, or it doesn't want to deal with it, do you know what it does? Runs away. When you find yourself not ready to deal with your problems, not ready to to have those confrontational conversations, that's amygdala at function again. You're running away from your problems. It doesn't mean that you are creating a solution for your problems. You're just not ready to face it, basically. That happens a lot in relationships when you have a miscommunication or misunderstanding What ends up happening is that you just want to go, right? You just want to leave. You just want to fly away. And that's amygdala. Third function of your amygdala is freeze. Literally, you know, something shocking happens and you definitely lose control and you don't know what to do. That's exactly amygdalate function. Again, it stops you from doing anything because it blocks your ability to function because it thinks that there is threat, there is some sort of danger out there, and it just blocks you from functioning because it can create worse outcomes. When you find yourself not able to speak up, not able to say what you want to say, instead you just freeze and don't say anything, because you're under a bit shock, that's amygdala. And the fourth function of amygdala is fall. Literally, I'm talking about fainting. When you lose control, when amygdala thinks that that kind of danger and threat is just too big for your system, it literally shuts it down and you completely fall and you faint. That's an amygdala function. And why is it important? Because it protects you from, again, far worse outcomes. And in order for you to have a better quality of life, you need to become aware of these 4 functions of amygdala so that you understand that this is real. You need to learn and adopt a new way of thinking and speaking, and you can become a healthier and happier version of yourself. So there you have it, 4 functions of amygdala. I hope it helped you. I know it is definitely going to serve you if you really apply all the things that you learned over here.
