5 Mental Blocks You Don't Even Know You Have

Dr. Shiny Unsal identifies five automatic mental processes that block growth: comparison, deletion, distortion, generalization, and assumption. She explains how the brain's limited capacity creates these barriers and shows how to catch them by pausing and labeling what's happening, like saying "I'm assuming" to reframe and make clearer decisions.

5 mental blocks you don't even know you have. Combines the power of the mind with the wisdom of your heart, and it just helps you to unlock your potential. Hey everyone, welcome to my Shiny Minds Show. Hello everyone, my name is Shiny Unsal. I am the proud creator of Neuroshine Technology, ICF-certified NLP and coach trainer, ICF-certified coach, and a leadership professor at UCLA Extension. Today I would love to talk to you about your mind. Your mind is a meaning-making machine. Even though you are not aware, it is still creating meaning. It is still making judgments, and they're all automatic. And there are actually basically 5 processes that happen so fast. Even when you are watching and listening to me right now, those 5 processes are happening. And I do want you to become aware of all these 5 processes because I'm telling you, they're going to literally change your life. When you become aware of how your mind works, what are the mechanics behind your thoughts and language and behaviors, you're going to be a much more conscious, much more aware human being, and you're going to catch yourself when you need to, and you're going to create much more effective, meaningful, and powerful decisions. If you're ready, let's go. Number 1 is comparison. As an NLP trainer, I have been teaching how the mind works and the mechanics of the brain to thousands of people since 2011. And what I created with my Neuroshine technology was that I expanded the idea of mechanics of the brain, and comparison is actually one of the things that I edit. So So if you ever want to learn more about NLP, you can always search for it. You may not see this one as part of NLP. That's why I'm making the distinction. Comparison as a mental mechanic is a part of my Neuroshine Technology content. And comparison is something that you do all the time. Why? Because your brain has already some information that you gathered throughout your life. You have your experiences, you have your values, your beliefs, and you have your own childhood understanding map of the world that you compare everything to. So everything that makes you, you, they become a filter and you compare everything what you already have inside your mind. I call them mental files. Does that make sense? If you know what is good, you also need to know what is bad. In order to make a decision if something is beautiful, you also need to know what is ugly. There is always this comparison, and it's also one of the laws of the universe. Number 2 is deletion. So this is definitely a part of neuro-linguistic programming. We delete information because we don't have enough capacity right here in the brain. Okay, so your brain has about 100 billion neurons inside, and they can process information 7 plus or minus 2 bits of information, which is 5 to 9 bits of information every given time. Almost like a fish, right? So it's like having a fish memory. So if you have a fish memory, you will remember things at that short memory at that, at that given time, but it'll be your short memory. You'll forget it later on. So if you want to contain information that is important for you, you need to remember that you have a capacity and your brain automatically deletes information. So what do you need to do? You need to focus. You need to take notes. You need to repeat listening or watching that information over and over again, because repetition is the queen of every skill. Number 3 is distortion. This is where your mind creates all the stories. If you're good at creating excuses, complaining, blaming, and shaming yourself, that's what distortion is. Distortion is where you create a story either to make something work or to convince yourself that it will not work. And here's the math behind it. If your desire to make something done is bigger than your excuses, complaints, fears, and obstacles, then you're gonna get it done. If you want it bad enough, you're gonna find a way to make it happen. Or you're going to find an excuse for it. Number 4 is generalization. Remember how I told you that your brain is a meaning-making machine? Where you make a meaning, this brain needs to collect all the information, get all the pieces here, there, all the patterns, and then it needs to generalize. It needs to make a conclusion. That's why you automatically go into that. And you need to watch out because if you find yourself making all these generalizations, you're also creating limiting beliefs for yourself. If you keep saying, oh, all the people are like that, or, oh, I cannot trust man. If you are making this type of generalizations all the time, please watch out and catch yourself and ask yourself, is it really every time? Is it really all the time? Is it really everyone? Because you will find out it isn't. It's probably one person said something and you made a whole generalization out of it and you're limiting yourself and your worldview just because of that. And that's how it becomes a mental block for you. Number 5 is assumption. So this is also just like comparison. Assumption is also a part of my Neuroshine technology. When you compare, delete, distort, and generalize information, Now your brain goes into this assumption creation and your brain is like, okay, if this is all the information that I have, then I am assuming this must be the situation. When you share your belief, your assumption with others, then it becomes something that you put on others and you now are sharing your own map of reality and you're making conclusions based on that. And guess what? It only belongs to your head. And that's why when you share your opinions, when you share your assumptions, you always want to start by saying, well, I'm assuming you've done it because of that. Am I right? Remember, that's your assumption. That's why it can block you. It can become a mental block and it can show up in your conversations and people can feel like, Why are you thinking that way? That's not the truth. That's not why I did it. That's your assumption. They're thinking it, but they may not even say that to you. And that's why it may become a mental block. And that's why I'm telling you, whenever you are ready to share your opinion, share your thoughts and beliefs and perspectives with people, please remember that you have already compared, deleted, distorted, generalized, and created an assumption out of it. And please start by saying, well, I'm assuming, is that right? Okay, there you go. There you have it. Those 5 mental blocks that you don't even know you have and how to reverse engineer them and how to become free of them. I hope you liked this video because I'm telling you, it's one of the most powerful information that you can ever know about yourself. This is life-changing. If you go deep in it, it is definitely going to change everything that you know about yourself. And of course, if you want to learn more about it, I'm going to put a link right over here.
