How Not To Behave On Zoom

Dr. Shiny Unsal lays out three Zoom rules: keep your camera on unless you have a real reason not to, stay actively engaged with unmute and chat, and treat the meeting like it matters. Virtual meetings deserve the same respect as in-person ones.

Let's talk about how not to behave on Zoom. Combines the power of the mind with the wisdom of your heart, and it just helps you to unlock your potential. Hey everyone, welcome to my Shiny Minds Show. My name is Shiny Unsal. I am the proud creator of Neuroshine technology and your Neuroshine coach. Today I would love to talk to you about Zoom meetings. Because come on, face it, now we are living in a different world and this world is kind of a digital virtual world. And I don't know about you, but most of my business and my profession is happening online. And because I'm using Zoom, that's why, you know, I named this video, how not to behave on Zoom, because based on my own personal experience, I am having difficulty, and I wanted to express my concerns about how we are behaving on Zoom and how we are not supposed to be behaving. First of all, I have been teaching leadership communication strategies and emotional intelligence at UCLA Extension since 2012, and yes, I actually am the the only person, the first person in UCLA's history to create an online leadership course, but it was back in 2014. And this year when everything went online, it's all happening online, it's all happening digitally, and then we are using Zoom. And because my business, my training business, because I'm a licensed trainer of Neuro Linguistic Programming and I'm also an ICF approved coach trainer, all my hands-on, in-person, face-to-face trainings are now happening online too. And what am I using? Zoom. I am speaking, I'm a speaker, right? So all the speaking engagements that I am being invited to are happening on Zoom again. And here is what I have been personally experiencing. When I go to a speaking engagement, ladies, gentlemen, whoever is in the Zoom meeting, They are forgetting that it is a real meeting. And I have been wanting to do this video. And before I share too much, I'm going to go one by one because I just broke it down to 3 things that we are not supposed to be doing. So let me start with number 1. Do not keep your camera off. Why is that important? And there's the context around it, right? This is a meeting. This is no different than you going to a hotel room and going into that meeting room and then sitting in front of a speaker, right? There is a speaker and you are listening to that speaker. And by just showing respect, you just want to create an eye contact. You want to show up and you want to be present, right? Because that speaker is there to add some value to your life. So if you are keeping your camera off, here's how it feels like, because I am that speaker, and to me it feels like, hmm, this person actually might be doing something else and may not really pay attention to what I'm saying, and I want to make a difference. I want to share something valuable with that person, and still yet they're not even willing to listen to me. So that doesn't feel good. From this perspective. I understand though, if you are in a situation within a context that keeping your camera off would be much better, then I understand. Maybe you have dogs all over you and maybe you have your little baby on your lap. I get that. If those are your conditions, you can keep your camera off. And if you're just going to be coming and going and coming and leaving, That I understand. But if you don't have these conditions, if it is not your context, please keep your camera on, everyone. Let's have a conversation. Let's create eye contact. Let me see your body language. Let me smile to you, right? This is how we interact. This is how we keep engaged. And that's why number 1 is, again, do not keep your camera off. Number 2, do not stay unengaged. What do I mean by that? Maybe you have your camera on and maybe you also are there physically, you're just present, but you're definitely not engaging. You're definitely not showing any signs that you are enjoying the conversation. Maybe you're not really unmuting yourself when the speaker is asking you to ask a question. You're just like staying there and you're not getting engaged. You're not interacting with anyone. You're not even taking a time to write something on the chat. You're just like on your corner. Why do you show up there then, right? You want to get engaged because this is the world we live in and we want to create more engagement. We want to create more interaction. We want to grow together. We want to learn from each other. And that's why when you stay unengaged, that cannot happen. And you cannot build that network. You cannot build that relationship and you cannot learn as much. So number 2, do not stay unengaged. Number 3, do not minimize the importance of those virtual meetings. It doesn't even have to be Zoom, whatever the technology that you're using, they might be recorded. Okay, if they are being recorded, whatever you say is also being recorded. And so you don't want to be dropping big names and revealing some confidential information, and you don't want to be really out there too much. You want to ask people's permission if you're going to share something, so you really need to be careful, especially if you are in an environment where that environment is not that quiet, of course, keep yourself muted. And if you want to ask a question, you can unmute yourself. So just because it is happening virtually, it doesn't mean that the topic is not important. Just because it is available to you at the comfort of your home, it doesn't mean that it is not important. Guess what? It's just a trick of the brain. If you paid thousands of dollars to go to a hotel and maybe drive 1 hour to be there and to be among those people and to really learn that information, maybe you would give the importance that it deserves. But right now it's maybe like, it's just like 1 click away. Maybe mentally you, without realizing though, you're just minimizing the importance of what's going on. So I just want to remind you that they are still important. They are still there to improve you, to help you grow, especially those topics, those speakers, those opportunities that you get. Every opportunity that you get, ask your question, get involved, and if you can, Also use the buttons available to interact even more. Whatever the version that you're using virtually, that is up to you and the technology that you use, but there are ways to get the most out of technology and interact and grow with the world that we live in today. So that was what I wanted to share with you. I hope this video helps you. If it did, please like this video and share it with others so that everybody knows how not to behave on Zoom, right? So that we can improve ourselves and respect each other. And of course, become more and achieve more for a better world. This channel is all about growth.
