I continue to be inspired by people who give back to their communities in such a rough climate. This time I asked my lovely wife Ayesha to help me surprise a very special mom. Let's see how it goes.
My name's Lisa Truong, and I'm the founder and executive director of Help a Mother Out. We are an Oakland-based nonprofit that gets diapers to homeless and low-income families in the Bay Area. I nominated Kai'i for a gift of joy. She's one of the unsung heroes of this pandemic. She started with the organization 2 weeks before shelter-in-place orders. She's been We've been able to distribute over 1 million diapers a month to Bay Area families. The gift of joy is going to make a big impact with Kai'i and her family because they don't really have extended family in the area. With those resources, they'll be able to get a little bit of respite from the childcare duties and work duties and hopefully just have a little self-care time.
She thinks she's interviewing for a documentary, and I'm gonna completely surprise her with a video call. Let's do this.
Oh my gosh, hi.
Hi, Kai'i. You are such an amazing mom, and I've heard about everything that you do, You're so inspiring. I really just wanted to bring you down here to give you personal thanks. Also, I know how challenging it is to have kids at home right now and maintain work and helping other mothers at your job. So Stephen and I teamed up with Rakuten to provide you with $10,000 for childcare services.
Crazy! Thank you so much!
Absolutely.
It's so nice seeing you and meeting you. I love your restaurant.
Thank you. That's what we try to do. We try to bring the heat. You're bringing the heat everywhere else when it comes to helping moms, and we wanted to give you a signed copy of my cookbook., a gift certificate to have a night out at International Smoke, and a signed jersey from Stephen. Please know that everything you're doing is making such a huge impact in your community, and we see you. So thank you.
Oh my goodness. Thank you to you and your family too. That's so great. Bye. Bye, Ms. Curry. Okay, bye. Talk soon. I feel really, really blessed right now. I feel like I worked really hard, and I feel like this is the result of working really hard and just being appreciative of the universe in general. And I just can't believe that people like that are in the world that are giving back with like everything that's going on right now, that people just are just being good people. This is gonna help like a lot. And I just really feel thankful right now.
I really hope that this gift from Stephen and I and Rakuten helps go a long way by helping her with her childcare services. A little bit goes a long way, and there's things that you can do in your community as well. Until next time, spread a little joy.
Oh man, that was amazing. Big shout out to Rakuten for helping make this happen, for stepping up and bringing some joy to these special people's lives. This is what we need right now. We need to encourage and love each other, help each other out, and continue to be positive through this crazy time.
