Day In The Life Of Stephen Curry: Welcome To The Curry Cup!

Stephen Curry hosts the Curry Cup at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey, a junior golf tournament run by the Underrated Golf Tour. The tour has grown to include its first UK event in three years and focuses on access and equity for underrepresented young players. Jordan Brown wins a dramatic three-way playoff against Lucas Jimenez and Jayden Soong.

Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
Two feet. Two feet. Oh, it's going left. Down the hill, watch. It's spicy time right now. Ah, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
Oh, wait, wait, wait.
Go back.
Go back.
That was the wrong way. Wait till you see this picture I just took. All right, here we go.
1, 2, 3.
Underrated.
The Underrated Tour has made it to the Curry Cup, literally in the shadows of the Stephen Curry We're on the skyline of New York City at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. This one's personal for me. When I was the age of these kids, I walked these fairways. I was lucky enough to grow up and fall in love with the game of golf here. And why? This A.W. Tillinghast golf course spread over 27 holes and 250 acres. This is an amazing piece of land. The tilt to the land, the strategy associated with playing this composite golf course. And if you look through the history of golf in America, a Ryder Cup, a United States Amateur Championship, 4 FedExCup playoff events, a U.S. Senior Open, a Senior PGA Championship, a U.S. Girls' Junior. History lives at Ridgewood Country Club. Who will win the Curry Cup at Ridgewood Country Club?
Go down a little bit more.
They pick their walkout songs?
Yeah.
So he had us moving over there. Oh, hey! The course was great yesterday. Yeah, it's hard.
It's like— like we said, it was like hard but easy. This is like completely hard. Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Woo!
Steph, a year ago, we're in the bay.
Yes, sir.
We're in your home. And here we are a year later, and we are literally walking in the direction toward Midtown Manhattan. Because in that— right there, just over that horizon, you can see Midtown Manhattan. So we're in the shadows of New York City. New York City because the Underrated Tour has come here to Ridgewood Country Club. In the last year, when you think about where we were and where we currently are, what stands out?
Just the wide net that we've been able to cast in junior golf. You know, this season being able to plant our flag in the UK, going across the pond and having our first Underrated Golf Tour event there. The 2 winners being able to get access to the Curry Cup this year. So, and like you said, having the Curry Cup here on the East Coast, new market for us. Obviously a lot of great energy around the tour, a lot of great talent, a lot of great support from, you know, our partners who believe in our vision, our leadership, being in a space where we can continue to service these kids at a very high level and give them the experience that they deserve. I'm just super excited and just the momentum that we have. And we had a big vision for this tour. 3 years in, I don't think I would've imagined— I think I said it last year and I still can't imagine believe that we're in this space where, you know, we have kids in college who have been a part of our tour, and we have, again, so much talent that you come out here and watch them play. Not only did they handle themselves the right way, not only do they represent the best of junior golf, but we're hopefully a small part of their journey. Where am I? Where are you standing at?
I'm right here. All right.
All right, y'all ready? I'll wait till the end.
Y'all ready?
Set, go.
Good shot. You ain't lying. But man, we can't thank you enough.
Ah, man.
It really is next level. These kids, they don't always get a chance to be around you, but They would all hug you to death. It's really good seeing you and your family. Is Pops here? Absolutely. He over here somewhere. He was just behind us. Yeah, he's on his way too. They're all over here hanging out somewhere. It's all love, man. Hope you had a good time. I appreciate it.
Yes, sir.
Past 3 years have been— enjoyed it, man. This is Morgan. Yes, sir. Good luck, man. Going back to school? Yes, sir. Good work, good work. Absolutely. Appreciate it. I know I'm gonna see y'all a little later too. We hanging out tonight. You go back— when you go back tomorrow? Uh, yeah, I'm driving back, uh, tomorrow. How far is it?
6. Okay.
Yeah, it's gonna be, uh, it's gonna be an early morning. Yeah.
Gotta make it.
You got class? Oh, let's go. All right, all right. You know, he misses money, so he gotta stay on. Absolutely. You got the right mentality. I ain't gonna lie, this really feels like a US Amateur type event with the turnout we got. Look, they go all the way back down the fairway. Hole set 16, 17. The hardest shot in golf is what this lady right here is. She gotta try to hit it 2 hops in the rough and hope it almost comes to a complete stop right when it gets to the— the fringe and then let gravity do its work. If she gets this anywhere inside of 20 feet, it is a miracle. Mm-mm-mm. That's as good as she could— you had to try it. By the way, you had the most impossible shot of all time. Oh my God, thank you.
And then I had that one putt and I'm like, all right, like if I putt this in, it doesn't even make it past the rough, like—
Yeah, I was giving commentary and play-by-play on your first chip, and I'm like, there's not much. There's just not much you can do.
It's either like you play it to hit the fringe, and that can possibly go on the green.
Yeah, 100%. I said it, if you keep it on the green, it's a win. That's a B+.
I was just like, I'm just gonna take it and leave it. And then that last putt was like, I like was like low-key was like trying to make it in.
Oh, 100%. At this rate on 18, absolutely. But it's okay.
Absolutely.
I had fun though, so.
I believe that access is inspirational. I was lucky enough to grow up here. Mm-hmm. And to walk these fairways with these giant cascading oak trees and to come back here and to be a part of something that you have created, it's remarkable to me because I know what it felt like to be here as a kid. You talk about access, which is one of the pillars of Underrated.
Absolutely.
To see the inspiration of these kids and to see 'em now projecting toward college golf Did you think that that would be achievable as quickly as it's been?
Not as quickly. I know you want to give kids an opportunity. You talked about the access and then obviously the equity across both the men's and women's game. I feel privileged to know that, again, there are kids that are waving the Underrated Golf Tour flag that have, you know, college scholarships playing this game and can then take it to the next level where not only do we have, okay, They played the best of the courses in our country. The kids that got to go were representing underrated golf across the pond. But the network of mentors and people that can come speak life into these kids in spaces that are of leadership out of the golf world. And I think we all know the doors that golf opens, the people that it brings together. And to be able to pass the baton to these kids at such a young age and let them see the world in a different way, for us, that was always a part of the mission. And obviously, I want to get more Black and brown kids on the professional tour. Sure. I know some of these— C-suites are probably hoping they don't choose golf because there's some really capable kids, you know, who are intelligent and hardworking off the course as well. So golf can be a vehicle for accomplishment and achievement in that vein as well.
Nice, you hold it.
I was gonna touch it on the tee ball.
I was like, no, I don't wanna. No, go ahead. It's beautiful.
Wait, hold it, hold it, Maya. This thing is heavy, bro.
I know. Absolutely. There we go.
Thank you.
Yeah! She is the winner right there. It's heavy, huh? It is heavy. Great job. Great job. It's awesome. You're always putting on for the tour. We appreciate you. Great job.
Thank you.
Great job. Way to grind it out. Congratulations, champ. Great work. Way to play all week. Hope you had a great time too.
Thank you. The champ.
Yeah, go ahead and get ready for it. Go ahead and get ready for it. Just embrace it.
Yeah!
Yeah, I gotta go see what club that was. What club was that, you think?
56, 52.
9-iron. He went with the—
I would have taken the 52.
And just one hop it into it. Yeah, so this is This is the thing you were just talking about, knowing this course. You would come over here and you say if the pin is past halfway, you're literally cutting off the back half of the green.
You're in the shoulder.
100%.
You can't go back there for sure.
I'm looking at front number and if it rolls up to pin high, cool.
If I got a chip up, good.
Yeah. There's a big X on the back of the green.
Big X. I wonder if he got a free drop back there.
I think he did. It was on the— down some of the carpet, but that's as good as you could do. I mean, it's a good chip from there.
That's about as good as you could do. Yeah.
I love that stuff though. I love watching y'all figure out a course. These greens are so pure. Oh my God.
Ah! Good putt.
Good putt. Made it a little harder than you wanted it to. I love it. Don't matter, you make it. Good job. Good job.
As somebody who loves golf, you don't just love it to play it, you love it to watch it, to learn about it, to be on properties like this and take in this design and this architecture. What have you learned about yourself and your relationship with the game of golf in the last year?
Well, to compete at a level where it brings the best out of you. Winning that Tahoe event was cool, but it did more for, I think, everything else I'm doing in this space to kind of validate, you know, how much this game means to me. Been playing since I was 10. You know, obviously my basketball career has taken me places, but to be in a situation where, you know, you're known for some golf swings and you're known for the spaces that you're trying to take up in the golf world, I don't even know how to put it into words. And when I picked up a club when I was 10, I knew I loved the game. I knew it, you know, It taught me so much about myself, even, you know, at that age and even now. It's the greatest walk being able to be around people that, you know, you can connect with out on the golf course and just continue to allow that access to then trickle down to the next generation. So for me, I'm gonna still scratch the competitive itch for sure, but that's only, again, hopefully, you know, increasing the platform that I have in this world.
[FOREIGN LANGUAGE] So we got a 3-way playoff.
3-way playoff for the Curry, first Curry Cup playoff?
First Curry Cup playoff.
Yes.
'Cause last year we missed by a couple strokes.
Yes, we did.
Nail-biter. So I got Lucas Jimenez, Jayden Soong, and Jordan Brown. So you also got the US Open qualifier, almost qualifier, sectional, Jayden Soong, young fella, heart of the line, maybe US Am.
Baller.
You got Jordan Brown who sneakily got in through San Antonio. We had no mention of saying his name until he won. Yeah. And you got the sleeper, uh, Lucas Jimenez.
So who you going with? I mean, I already picked Jayden, so I'm sticking with my pick.
I'm going Jordan Brown.
All right.
I'm going Jordan Brown.
Let's see how this plays out.
I mean, because I know how these kids move and I know how they work, you know. Jordan Brown's gonna be victorious and all his teeth gonna be shown.
2024 Curry Cup, let's get it. Oh yeah, hello, hello.
I mean, you got a little slight downhill, and I know he know how to manage his speeds right now because, uh, we saw a couple get away from him. But you guys, you got an uphill battle.
You got an uphill, uphill putt. I don't know who goes first. It looked like Jay ain't going. It looked like Jordan going first. Uphill putt, put the pressure on. I don't mind That's Van Ness Jordan. Yes.
Yes, sir. Yes!
Yeah. Thank you, sir. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Dear Lucas, happy birthday to you. Yeah!
Good job.
I know. All right, let's do it again. It went from 3 to 2, and our 2 is still alive, so we're running 18 back. We're running 18 back, right?
18 back, yeah.
Running 18 back. Another sudden death. Our 2 boys are showing up right now. They both stuck it to within, what, within 10 feet, 12 feet?
I think easy.
Nerves and 14 got 'em. This is where they say, "I've seen this putt all day." I've seen this putt all day. I've seen this putt all day, and nobody's left it short of the hole. If you get it inside of 4 foot, you got to be happy with that.
Right. And by that time in the telecast, the analyst's breath is kicking very hot. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Jordan's got a relatively straightforward putt, but depending on how much break he plays will depend the speed. If he plays a lot more break, it's going to be faster. I love the speed at which Jordan plays.
Ooh, that didn't come off.
It did not. Oh, it's bugged. As we said, the right to left picked up speed as it got by the hole. He did not play enough break, therefore it is still his honor. He is USA, you're still away. You're still away. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
Woo! Yes, sir!
We have a winner. Great job. Way to battle, man. Way to battle. Hope you had a great time.
Yes, sir.
Champ!
Thank you.
Congratulations, man. Way to grind it out.
Thank you.
That's how it goes. Yes, sir. Ah, got it! Got it! Yeah!
Last thing, the mile marker 4, which we will hit next year, what do you want for this tour in 2025?
Continue to raise the bar on, you know, the on-course and the tour stop experience for kids. Obviously, it's all-access or all-expenses-paid for for them and their families to come be a part of our tour. You know, hopefully we have some great courses lined up, hopefully 2 events across the pond and continue to spread internationally. So, you know, the more I do great things on the basketball court, I get complimented for that, but the— my biggest compliment now in the world of golf is, "Hey, you know, one of the kids I know, he or she played on your golf tour and they loved the experience." Hey. They got to meet such and such person that gave them a glimpse on, hey, I could be, you know, interested in whatever industry or profession outside of golf and just continue to create that momentum for kids that way down the line, they'll be like, I got my start or I built my confidence or I allowed myself to, you know, believe that I can be whatever I can be through golf, through the Underrated Golf Tour. And that's the mission.
Well, I said that access is inspirational, and it is. People are inspirational, and I don't know if you ever thought you were gonna inspire people outside of your field, but you are in the game of golf.
Thanks, Gary.
Congratulations.
Thanks to guys like you, Jason Richards, Rob Roxbury, Will Lowery.
You got a great team.
We got a great team, and only getting better from here.
Thank you.
Yes, sir, Gary. Thank you.
