In this bonus episode of the YouTube series '5 Minutes from Home Overtime', host Stephen Curry interviews rapper E-40 about the creation and evolution of his signature Sluricane/Hurricane beverage. E-40 recounts how, while attending Grambling State University in Louisiana, he would buy a Hurricane Slurpee from a local liquor store, an experience that later inspired him to develop a cocktail version for his touring crew. He describes the process of turning the Slurpee into a mixed drink, the resulting song and remix that referenced the track 'I Got 5 On It', and how the drink became a staple on the road. E-40 lists several variants he has crafted, including the original New Orleans Hurricane, the Blue Lagoon, the Yellowbird, a Sweet Tea (an Arnold Palmer with vodka), and mentions the types of tequila he uses (añejo, blanco, reposado). The conversation is informal and enthusiastic, ending with a call to action for viewers to subscribe to the channel.
Hey, this is Stephen Curry. You're watching 5 Minutes from Home Overtime. Hope you enjoy this bonus episode we got for you. [MUSIC] So you can cook, and then you're in the beverage game.
You got— Yeah. You start with— what do you start with, sourdough? Actually, I started off with wine. OK. When I went to Grambling State University, I used to go to this liquor store, 'cause at that time, time you could be 18 and drink in Louisiana. And so I go to the liquor store early in the morning. And I ain't gonna lie, I don't want all the kids to do it, but I buy me a Hurricane. And it came in a Slurpee form. So years later, I did a show, me and the clique. We was on the road. And we had been drinking gin and juice through the whole time, right? And we got tired of it. So anyway, to make a long story short and a short story long, I was like, bartender, we need something to get us right in there. We need to get to perking right away. We need to be warped. So she did it. Guess what it was? It was Slurpee, but it wasn't in a— in daiquiri form. I said, "Can I get the recipe for that?" Gave me the recipe. We made a song about it. Everywhere we went, like, you know that song, "I Got 5 On It"? Yeah. <LYRICS>I got 5 on it.</LYRICS> Man, dude. <LYRICS>Oh, thank you.</LYRICS> Come on, man. That song right there was already a hit, but when we did the remix, it was more than a hit. If you ever listen to the remix to "I Got 5 On It," all we talked about was Hurricane through the whole time, 'cause that's what we was on. I made a big old batch of Hurricane. Years later, I went after the wine. Once you in it, you in it. And I've messed around and made Slurricane, E-40 Slurricane Hurricane. I got the Blue Lagoon. I got the Yellowbird. I got the original Hurricane from New Orleans. And I have the Sweet Tea now. Oh, I ain't had the Sweet Tea. It's pretty much an Arnold Palmer— Yeah. —with vodka in it. That's what it is, bro.
I'm from the South. I know all about that. But I need to have your spin on it.
I'll hook you up, man. I'll bring a case through. You know what I mean? And then you got the E-40. Yes. I love that name, by the way. Thank you, brother. I love it. I got the anejo, the blanco, and the repo. Reposado. Yep, exactly. So I'm just keeping it pushing.
