I played Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo 64.
That was like my first game, man. Classic.
Classic. I played Smash too.
Yeah?
But every time I would win against my older brother, he would whoop my ass.
Oh, they beat you down?
Yeah, so I stopped playing Smash.
I'm like, "I'm done with this." I thought esports wasn't a contact sport. That's the— What's up, fellas?
What's up, baby?
Hey, man. Sorry to keep y'all in the cold so long.
That's all good. So good.
Nice to see you, man. How you doing, boss? Nice to meet you, man. Nice to meet you too. You have a good time at the game?
Yeah, man. It was amazing.
I'm glad you didn't slip this time.
I know. They were asking me, "Why aren't you dunking?" I was like, "I gotta stay in my lane for a little bit. I'm still recovering." Appreciate y'all coming through.
Yeah, man.
About to talk about what y'all got going on.
Yeah.
We'll go get some food too.
All right, awesome.
One of my favorite spots in the Bay, so—
Let's get it, man. Let's do it. Let's go.
We got TSM Myth and Hammers in the back. We're very excited to talk about their background in the esports world, how they're pioneering a new industry and creating their brands and creating their legacy from the jump.
So Steph, what are some of your favorite games?
So, I'm terrible at Fortnite. God awful. God awful. But I love any golf game. When it comes to 2K Madden, Tiger Woods had his own game that I loved to play. But Call of Duty was one. I had a lot of spare time before I got married, before I had kids.
Yeah.
Which Call of Duty? Modern Warfare, the first one.
OK. Oh, heck yeah.
Yeah.
You got to get into that new game, Apex, man.
I'm telling you.
Apex is—
It's free.
And we're going to get you a Twitch account.
That's right.
I have never met someone who's played a golf video game.
I'm here. I'm here. If you want some of that action, you let me know. I'll see you. That's the one thing I get made fun of the most.
When you hit them with that, "Yo, you wanna play PGA Tour?" Yeah.
[LAUGHTER] You know, everybody sees you now, the polished product.
Mm-hmm.
But obviously everybody has a journey where it starts.
Yeah.
Can you guys kinda talk about when you realized that this could be a profession almost in terms of, like, you know, what you guys are doing now? Yeah.
At a young age, I sort of knew that it was becoming a thing. A thing that you could do. I remember in middle school, like, I watched Twitch streamers, like, every morning, like, with my cereal before I went to school. So I was part of, like, the youngins that seen it evolve into something you could literally do.
Right.
And then—
And change your perspective.
Yeah, and try to, like, chase it, basically.
What about you, Ambush?
Halo was, like, the first game I realized that I was actually good at shooting games.
Yeah.
I was just like, "Okay. Obviously, I have some type of talent," you know? And then it just went from there. Every game I played, I was always good at it. And then eventually, TSM found me. You mean Myth found me? Myth was actually the one who found me.
Yeah.
That's the man right there.
So he's the player, coach, GM, scout?
Oh, yeah.
He's finding talent?
So basically, the way I found Hamlin is actually is I whooped his ass in a match in a Fortnite, in like a random match once. And then he whooped my ass, and I was like, "Okay, who's this dude? Who's this guy? He knows how to play." So I went to his stream one day, talked with him a little bit. You remember the first time I came to your stream? Yeah, yeah.
And you were like, "Are you interested in esports?" And I was like, "Okay, what do you mean?" What's the divine attributes that makes a—
A competitive— Amazing—
Yeah, e-gamer?
Yeah.
I think a lot of it stems from the way you practice. It's easy to go into practice, especially in esports, and being like, "I want to play to win in the formula that I know." But it's hard to sort of take that equation, flip it on its head, try different things that necessarily won't get you victory, but will teach you valuable lessons.
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
So, for example, you know, in Fortnite, I might do a practice session where, like, our objective isn't to win, but our objective is, "Okay, could we get a consistent 7?" 6 kills every single game. That, and then, I mean, attitude.
I got you.
And then I think the third most important thing to me is synergy and communication with your teammates.
How has that team-building experience been?
It's been good, like, overall. I mean, so TSM moved us into our house in LA, and, like, overall, I mean, I think we all, like, personally, like, enjoy each other. Yeah. Like, so—
That was one of the best parts. We all get along so well.
There's never been, like, a "You're stepping on my toes," like, in the house ever from any— like, side.
So that's me. Somebody steal y'all snacks or something in the pantry.
I've done that a few.
Huh?
You know your Lemonheads in the closet? Are those yours?
Are you ready? Oh no, those are Daquan's. Those are Day's? Those are Day's.
But it's OK, buddy, because I go through a lot of oatmeal. You took my—
which one?
Look at this.
The brown sugar.
OK, you can have those. This is—
nah, nah.
Do y'all have off days where you got to get away from the game?
I have a short day. So what's that? So my short, so typically I wake up at 4:30 in the morning. Goddamn. And then I start streaming from 5 till about 8:00 PM. Yeah. And my short days, I will sleep in. I'll start streaming at around 2 or 3 and do like a 6, 8-hour stream.
Okay. The duras, like you're 7 days a week?
Typically, yeah.
Got it.
Preferably.
You're the same?
Yeah.
That's crazy.
That's crazy, man. A lot of people don't realize how tiring streaming can actually be in general.
Oh, yeah.
'Cause the best way I explain it to people, 'cause you know, they just think you're just sitting down for 10, 15 hours.
Playing video games.
The best way I think about it, man, is just imagine driving a car for 15 hours and then on top of that, you have to be entertaining and funny.
Right.
You know, and then you're fully concentrated the whole time, you know.
I had one streaming experience. I was in Houston and Hunter Pence, who plays for the San Francisco Giants.
Yeah.
He has, he was building his own little studio and he's like, "Yo, you wanna come over? We'll play Mario Kart. We're gonna stream it, yada yada." I'm like, "Yeah, sure, I'll come do it." Yeah.
Mm-hmm. I played for like 3 hours.
And I was exhausted. I'm trying to figure out where everybody's at, and he's asking me a question. I'm trying to make a joke. Then I fall off the board. I'm like, damn. What am I doing? But that was a wild experience. So I have obviously newfound respect for what you guys had to do. Have you guys played against anybody in the NBA that I can put on blast in terms of what their skill set's like on the 4-man?
Yeah. Oh, Mith has.
I played against Josh Hart in a kill race. Josh Hart. Elimination round.
Yeah. You killed him?
Yeah, I won. Yes, sir.
Got another—
oh, I got sniped. Oh, no.
Oh.
But I mean, in the video, we also had to hoop a little bit.
Oh, yeah?
Oh, yeah. Let's not roast him too hard.
That's way off. Oh.
Ooh, touchdown. Let's just say that my arm was moving directly out from my chest when I switched to the ball.
That man got a jumper like my grandma Peggy.
That's insane.
Kojakitchen, the food truck showing up here. It is unreal. I'm an avid customer, as you know. But these guys are first-timers, so I want to treat them real nice.
All right, all right.
It's like these Korean short rib sandwiches, but the buns are crispy rice.
Ooh. So it's no bread.
No bread. The bread is rice.
Rice.
With Korean short rib and sauce dripping. You have the kamikazes too? Thank you.
OK.
Everything for you.
Bro, it smells so good.
Cheers, boys.
Cheers, man.
Cheers.
Boom.
Appreciate y'all being on the "5 Minutes from Home." This is the first bite.
Is it happening?
Oh, yeah. This is the first bite. This is the new ASMR show. They're gonna listen to us eat for— Mm. You like ASMR? I hate it. My family loves it. Same. Oh my God. I can't get into it. My sister and my wife, they are addicted. And I'm like, yo, I don't get it. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't understand it. I feel real way too connected to this person. I don't even know you like that, but— Good.
