When I drop my daughter off every day, I drill her. We have a little convo we have before she gets out the car. She gets sick of running the script to me, but I pound it in her head. Like, you know, what is integrity? Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody's looking, all right? Are you a leader or a follower? I'm a leader. What's the difference? Think for myself, all right? Do you have confidence? Yes. It was confidence, believe in myself. That's our script every morning. The message I give my daughter, my son's really young, he 18 months, so he's picking it up by osmosis just by watching right now.
What's crazy is that what you instilled in your daughter is gonna spill right over, not just from your voice too, but she gonna be able to see somebody that was raised in the same household, same values, same morals, and be able to be like, "All right, that's how you do it. That's how you carry yourself. That's what you stand for." Like, that's a beautiful thing. You have superpowers as a parent that you never knew you had of being able to to have a perspective and make sure your priorities straight. You know, making sure your kids are taken care of and they feel that connection and they feel that bond with you as parents while you manage the craziness of life outside of the house.
When I was running for my first office, when I was running for city council, my son had the stomach flu. I had to stay home with him. And I had a phone interview, but it was for an endorsement.
Oh, yeah.
Really important endorsement, right? Stephen Curry, yeah. I'm like literally holding a bucket under him while I'm on the phone, like trying to answer the questions.
But you did it, right?
I got the endorsement. See, there you go.
I did. There you go. That's just all a part of the legend.
You know, I got a great— I just was blessed with a great big brother. You know, somebody that never drank, never smoked, would challenge me on bad decisions, always like— I always had, like, a great example of, you know, somebody that just had ultimate integrity.
I have 2 younger sisters that look up to me very strongly and, like, everybody in my family because I tried to keep myself on the right track, not zone off, like, and do something introduced other stuff last month. My mom and my dad have broke up, and that kind of hurt my little sister, so I had to step up to be the bigger role, and now I'm taking care of my sisters.
That's big time. And you found people that encourage you and keeping you straight, man. That's powerful right there, bro. Appreciate you. I don't know about you, but like, until you have a daughter too, and it—
Game changer. Game changer, bro. I ain't gonna lie.
For the better. Like, most people say, "Oh, I'm scared of having a daughter," this and that. Like, that might be a natural thing, emotion, but once you have that daughter, that's Daddy's little girl.
Yeah.
And you are able to shape her perspective on what's important in life and what she should see and how she should value herself.
Even when she's not around, I'm her little girl's father. You know what I mean? And so everything is on record regardless.
They give you a reason to wake up if you don't have a bad day, really.
Or when you have a bad day, it's what kind of recharges your batteries. Both my kids still like to be cuddled with. So I rarely make it home for dinner, but I often make it home to just tuck them in. And sometimes I crawl into bed and they fall asleep.
Nothing like that. There's nothing like that.
That's the best.
I'm sure they know and they're proud when they see you on TV, they see you giving a speech or doing something in the community or whatnot, that, "Hey, that's Mom," right?
I hope so.
I'm sure they have that vibe.
You know, actually, they're at the age where they're like, "Oh, God, it's Mom." Nah, deep down, deep down, they know.
They know what time it is.
It's kind of crazy because I came into a community, you know, West Oakland, McClimans that welcomed me and like really didn't care, you know, where I come from or how I am. They just, you know, accept me as a family and they got me like so far, you know, got me to meet you, you know, Stephen Curry.
Stephen Curry.
You know, he got me to play on a great basketball team with, you know, amazing people, amazing coaches. I'm talking about the staff. Everybody there doesn't just want you to succeed, but they also like want to help you in your personal life, you know, make sure that you're okay, you know. They're not just, "Oh, I'm just doing a job." You know, they're like, it's a family. That's why we call it a Mac family.
True care. Being in an environment like that you really can trust people around you and you know it's not just about what you can do on the court or whatever. It's like, you connect on a human level too. That's big 'cause it's hard to find too. That's it, man. Appreciate that. Thank you.
