Steph Curry's opening monologue at the 2022 ESPYS

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the 2022 ESPY Awards.

That's right. [APPLAUSE] We are here in beautiful Los Angeles. I am your host, Stephen Curry. [APPLAUSE] I appreciate that applause. It is amazing to be on this stage. I am the second NBA player to host this award show, which is kind of crazy to think about. LeBron James, he hosted this award show back in 2007 after losing in the NBA Finals. [LAUGHTER] So yes, you guessed it. This feels better. This feels better. [APPLAUSE] I'm not gonna lie though, I was a little nervous before coming out here on stage. You know, being from the Bay Area, you're not really— Bay Area in the house? Dub Nation, some Warrior fans. Yeah, you're never sure coming down here how an LA crowd would feel about you, right? But then I remembered, yo, we just beat the Celtics. And there is nothing more, or there's nothing that LA loves more than beating the Celtics.

So we all in this together. We all in this together. Speaking of the Celtics, Grant Williams, I see you in the building. It's great to see you again, my man. Hey, I know you like this color. I'll let you borrow it after I'm done, but. I might even let you wear a ring. Eh, we might. We'll see, we'll see. Speaking of, what an amazing crowd in the building. Give it up for yourselves. Thank y'all for coming out. [APPLAUSE] I see down here there's so many special people, so many amazing talents, so many teammates, so many Olympians. So many champions, so many potential Dancing with the Stars contestants. Hey, Andre, I know they're calling you, but just give me one more year. Just one more year on the court. Just—

Give it up for the Los Angeles Rams. They're in the building tonight. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Super Bowl champions. I know that sounds great. I know that sounds great. Stephen Curry. It was so inspiring watching y'all play, watching y'all win a Super Bowl, watching y'all celebrate. And it's just inspiring to see that strategy of, you know, buying old superstars pay off for a local team around here. You know? Hey, Mutombo, where Mutombo at? I heard you looking for a tenday.

Or no, no, no, no. Hit up Rob Palenka, let him know. All right. Hey, it's been an amazing year. You know, I don't get the opportunity to brag very often, so y'all just allow me to do that for a second. You know, Warriors, we won our 4th championship in 7 years.

I got that little trophy everybody said I needed. I can't remember what it's called. Got to break the NBA all-time career 3-point record, which is special. [SPEAKING SPANISH] So an amazing year, but somehow, you know, I'm still getting overshadowed by Draymond Green's podcast. I can't even be mad at it. It's a great show. It's a great show. Make sure y'all like and subscribe, you know? Like and subscribe, it's great. When the announcement came out that I'm hosting the ESPY Awards, there was a lot of questions. You just came off a grueling year, unbelievable finals. Why don't you wanna go on vacation? Kick your feet up, relax. Why you keep filling up the schedule? But after celebrating 3 kids' birthdays in 2 weeks, I finally understand why Tom Brady keeps coming back to work. Relaxation sometimes is exhausting, so. Tom Brady, speaking of, he's the only guy I know on Earth who'd rather get hit by Aaron Donald than hang out with a supermodel. We all make choices. Sometimes you don't understand some of them, so. You know, we've got an amazing show for y'all tonight, so I hope y'all are ready for it. And there's so many people that have worked hard to make this thing work. But a special shout out to the team that put Dell Curry's outfit together. 'Cause is that a suit with a bunny rabbit t-shirt on it? Psycho. Well, you're not coming on stage.
