Chapters
I launched A Gift of Joy to highlight some amazing volunteers who, despite the state of the world, are still taking time to give back. In this episode, my girl Storm Reid is gonna help me and Rakuten bring some joy to Corey Miller. Storm is the perfect person to help with this.
Hi, loves. I was so happy when Stephen asked me to help him give a gift of joy to Corey Miller. Steph told me his story, and he is nothing short of a superhero in his own community.
My name is Shirley Raines. I'm founder of Beauty to the Streets, and we take care of the homeless community of Skid Row. Fighters for the World is their own nonprofit, but they come out and assist Beauty to the Streets. They've been with us for about 2 years. They come out and provide security. They control the line. I nominated Corey Miller, AKA Whispers, from Fighters for the World for the gift of joy. He was on his way to feed the homeless. He was hit by a drunk driver, and he was alone in the hospital. He couldn't have his wife or friends or family with him due to COVID-19. And I just wanted to nominate him and give him something special for all that he does for the community.
His motorcycle club is going to be helping me, and I see them right now. Let's go. Hi, guys. How's it going?
He's one of the founding members of the club, been with us since we started from the very, very beginning. We've been 2 years helping with Skid Row and Beauty to the Streets.
Him going through these unfortunate things is heartbreaking. Hopefully, we can give him some joy today.
What up, homie?
Hahaha.
Yay, yay. What's up, Vegas?
Hey, how are you?
I'm doing good.
Is that your birthday? We're here on the wrong day? We thought it was your birthday.
Hi.
Hi.
How are you? Are you Corey?
I am.
I'm Storm. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you too.
All right.
Stephen Curry has heard about all the amazing stuff that you're doing in your community. And that you do for people who are down and out right now. So Rakuten and Steph wanted to give you this signed jersey.
Oh, dope.
By him.
What's going on?
What's going on? I also heard about your unfortunate accident. So I just wanna say that you are an inspiration to a lot of people. For you to bounce back and recover and to still be able to want to do the stuff that you're doing is incredible. I know that times are hard right now. We wanted to give you $10,000 towards your hospital bills.
[FOREIGN LANGUAGE] Right on.
Congratulations, Whisper.
Shirley called me and asked me to come help her move some stuff and get ready for tomorrow, 'cause tomorrow we'll go down to Skid Row to help feed the homeless. I heard the bikes and I was like, "What's going on?" So we went to go investigate, and then all you guys were out there. It was kind of crazy. It's gonna be huge. You know, it's just like a level of comfort, stability for me and my family. Being in the middle of this pandemic where to have that comfort is huge right now. It's gonna go a long way. It's pretty cool that people notice the impact that we're doing and the things that we do to help others. Why I do it, I do it just 'cause I like to do it, you know, but it was just, it's kind of cool to be appreciated.
It brought a lot of joy to me to see my brother, just reaching out for us, you know, here to help him and care for him in his time of need. It was really a beautiful, joyful thing that, you know, went down and yeah, it was great.
Being selfless, never selfish, giving back, giving gifts, of joy. That's what life is about. Thank you, Rakuten and Steph, for this opportunity. I cannot wait to see the gifts of joy we give next. See you soon. Thank you.
