Steven Burch compares building skills to learning to swim: once you can swim, depth doesn't matter. He applies this to residential real estate's chaos over the past two years—lawsuits, inventory problems, interest rates—and argues professionals need to strengthen their core skills to survive the crisis.

Yeah. I read this the other day that building skills and developing skills and getting really good at something is like swimming. And I thought, that's interesting. What the the hell does that even mean? And as I read deeper, it made total sense. See, you can swim in 5ft of water just as well as you can swim in a hundred feet of water once you know how to swim. What a perfect analogy for building and developing skills. This has been as tumultuous a 24 months as there has been in residential real estate. Between lawsuits, inventory, interest rates, sellers locked out, buyers freaked out. What do we do? Well, we lean on our skills. Because while we might be in a hundred feet of water right now and we can't touch the bottom, it doesn't matter so long as you're a great swimmer. Level up your skills and watch what happens.
