How to Make Better Videos Without Relying on Your Scripts... Do this instead

Matt from 1% Digital argues that reading scripts kills authority. Instead, internalize your material through rehearsal so you speak with confidence and conviction. His framework: clear idea, define the goal, surface the problem, propose solutions, rehearse, recap, call-to-action.

If you're a content creator and you want to be a better speaker and you think that scripts are going to make you be a better speaker, you're completely wrong. Now, there's a lot of attributes that go into making a successful video, and I'm pretty sure you've heard them all. But in today's video, I'm not gonna talk about any of those cliché ones. In fact, this very variable that you can have inside of your videos will make you exponentially better than everyone else. And this is the exact same variable that all of the clients inside of my content creation agency exploit to make sure that all of their videos have the best potential at persuading an audience on the points that they have. Robert Greene wrote a book called The 33 Strategies of War. One of the most important strategies is to shape their perspective. As a content creator, how do you actually shape your viewers' perspective? Because that is one of the most important things you can do. And if you're a content creator, then you know that's 100% true. But how do you actually do that? And no, it's not better scripts. In fact, you need to stop relying on scripts to make good content. What you need to rely on is rehearsing, because rehearsing is going to be the very thing that will take a good script to a great video, or take a bad video to a good video. If you rehearse your content, you will speak with way more authority, and authority breeds competence in the viewer's eyes. So if you're able to speak from a place of authority rather than assumption— because when you read a script, you're speaking from assumption because it's not information that you've actually gathered on your own to make a compelling video— so you actually you lose the connection and the authority in your delivery when you're speaking. Everyone that uses ChatGPT, Claude, and all these other AI tools to help them write scripts are not doing the wrong thing, but it's not doing the best thing. And if you want to be a better speaker for better content, this is the exact thing you need to be doing because having AI create you scripts is the equivalent of someone giving you a workout plan. Yeah, you could have the best workouts and you could go and do those workouts, but that's just enough to get the job done. But not get the job done good enough. You see, to have a good workout, you need mind-to-muscle connection and you need to really feel the workout. The intention behind the workout is what makes the workouts good. In fact, you can have somebody that only has one workout on their workout plan, but if they treat it with the utmost intention, that workout alone will be vastly better than the person that has all the fancy workouts that you could ever imagine inside the workout plan. This analogy is 100% applicable to your content creation. If you are relying on scripts to make better videos, you have failed immensely and you will actually never find the success that you deserve by doing that. If you want to make better videos, it goes into rehearsing and it also goes into ideation. Being able to segment those two things will make you vastly better than majority of the competition. Now, in today's video, I'm going to show you an exact blueprint of how my clients structure their videos, have 1 to 5 million views a month on their YouTube channels. If you don't know who I am, my name is Matt. I own 1% Digital, and it is a content creation agency that manages large YouTube accounts, and I've been doing it for the last 7 years. Everything that I'm talking about in this video and all my other videos is 100% derived from all of my experience inside of this place. So don't use my subscriber count or the amount of videos I have up as some inkling on whether what I'm saying holds valid, because if you're here, you're here early. This channel will be big one day, and everything I'm saying is from channels that are very big. So this is professional advice. Side note, what's the difference between a hobbyist and a professional? And I bring I bring this up because if you actually understand the difference, you're going to start operating like a professional. And what do professionals get? Results. And how do they get results? Because they prepare. Now, the difference between a hobbyist and a professional is the professional is paid to do the thing. The hobbyist just does it because they want to be a professional one day. With that being said, if you implement this blueprint, you'll start acting like a professional. So now let me illustrate exactly how this process works to make the most compelling videos without having to rely on scripts, because we know we don't want to rely on scripts. And in fact, This blueprint is going to be the basis of this video. So you're going to be able to watch it live because I actually haven't gone through the mechanisms to make this video successful because I wanted to do it live with you guys. Now, the big idea is the thing we always want to start with. And let's just go ahead and draw this box out and put idea in here. Now, I got my inspiration on making this video through seeing the disconnect in people using AI scripts, even including myself, to how you speak when you are speaking from a place of competence and authority. And those two attributes actually only come from a place of conviction. And conviction can only happen when a person is confident. And confident can only happen when you're speaking from the know rather than the assumption. So the big idea was I was looking at YouTube videos from myself and from clients, and when we used scripts verbatim, they lost the authority in the translation. So I got a big inspiration and I said, I'm going to make a video about making your scripts better without having to use scripts. And this is the video. So that's my idea is basically no scripts. Now, of course, we're using scripts to a degree because you always want a place to isolate it. So once you have the idea, you need to pull it from your finite mind or else you will lose the connection with that idea and the inspiration behind it. Once you remove it from your mind, put it on a place where you can revert to later. After that, you move on to the next piece, which is the goal. Now, once you understand the goal of the video, then you can actually start going in that direction. Imagine a soccer field where you don't know where the goal is. You have no idea in which direction to actually run. So with every single video you do, one of the most important things you can do inside of your script or your, your outline is what is the goal? What is somebody actually going to take from this video and how are you getting them there? The only way to do that is to isolate the goal. So my goal in this video is to make content creators understand how to make more effective videos. That's my goal. Let me just abbreviate that so I'm not writing forever. Better videos. So now once we have the idea, we moved on to the goal. The next thing we need to do is invoke some emotion into the mind. And how do you invoke emotion into the mind? Well, You need to start introducing problems. Next, we will move on to the big problem. Now, with the big problem, typically you can stem off into other segments of a video that are systemic problems from the main one. Now, the main problem here in this video is people losing authority when making videos, which ultimately has a cascading effect, which would be the symptoms. And then I would go into Problem 1, problem 2, problem 3, and however many problems I want. Ideally, I don't want to make the video too long, so I'll only do a couple of the best problems. But if anyone has any kind of awareness, they would be able to understand that the big problem has a lot of other problems beyond just what you're speaking about. Now, my big problem in this video is becoming inauthentic because you believe scripts will help you make better videos. So just for the sake of making this fit, let's just put inauthentic. Now, what are the symptoms of being inauthentic in your videos? Well, you have less conversions, and that is a big one because if you have less conversions, then you are actually not getting the most rewards for your efforts. In fact, the whole purpose of making good videos is to have some type of conversion, whether that conversion be a checkout on your website for whatever digital offering you have or info product or even just a simple thing like a like or subscribe, you're going to lack getting actual conversion. And that's the most important thing. Secondly, if you're inauthentic, you're going to start speaking from a place of assumption, which is going to start making your audience think that you're not trustworthy. So you're going to actually lose trust in your audience. And when you lose trust in your audience, it's going to be vastly harder to climb this mountain of becoming a successful content creator. Trust me, I've been in the space for a very long time, and to actually build a very profitable online presence is extremely hard and takes loads of consistency and effort. And the last problem I wanted to talk about today is intelligence. All three of these have massive implications on how successful your videos are. And when you're going through a video and you start listing off the problems, you also have to attach on the back end the solutions to all of them. Now, in this video, let's go through it. So in order to increase your conversion, you need to increase your conviction. Because why? One of the most influential attributes that someone can have is confidence. And the only way to increase your confidence is to increase your knowledge or your competence around the subject matter. So if you want more conversion, increase your confidence. And how do you do that? By rehearsing the content. Let's put rehearse. Now, if you rehearse your content, even if you're unfamiliar with the information, the more times that you do that, you're actually increasing how much you know about this topic. Even if it's a ChatGPT-written script, if you read it several times over, eventually you're going to learn it. Because one of the biggest things about knowing something is actually remembering. In fact, 40% of knowing comes from remembering. So if you can just actually rehearse your content, you're going to increase your competence on that subject matter by 40%, bare minimum, just by the remembering mechanism in your brain. Now, if you want to increase your trust, the only way to do that is by articulating yourself well enough, bringing the viewer from point A to point Z without that many drop-off points, because one of the biggest implications that someone is trusting you is how long they're actually sticking along, right? If you have a client and they're sticking along with you for a long time, chances are they trust you. So the longer someone is there, AKA your viewer, the more they're actually trusting you. And the way that we can actually quantify that is by looking at our retention charts. Typically with the channels I work with, we always shoot for at least 35% or greater. Now the 35% for us, is on the lower end of good. Ideally, we like to be a little bit higher, of course. But the more you increase your retention, the more people are trusting you because the very thing that they can do on YouTube is give up their time. And time is essentially the online currency. So if somebody's watching a video long enough, they're basically paying you with their most valuable online currency, which is time. So if you want to increase trust, make sure that you increase your structure around the subject. Kind of like exactly what we're doing right now. From idea to goal, from goal to problems, from problems to solutions. So on the opposite end of trust, let's put structure. Now, the last problem I wanted to cover on this video is intelligence. And what I did earlier was I referenced to how you can actually become more intelligent just is by rehearsing. In fact, this video took me 7 tries just to get it done. And while I rehearsed it a bunch, each time, of course, felt frustrating because I'm really trying to actually get it done and I'm treating it as if each attempt is the final upload. While they didn't make it to the upload, they still increased my intelligence around this subject matter because I tried to speak through it several times. And if I lose myself, then I'm of course losing my audience. And if you use scripts from ChatGPT or any of these AI tools, you're going to feel that you don't really actually understand the material and you're only reading rather than speaking, and you want to be in a place from speaking. So using AI is actually making you dumber if you're not rehearsing. And it's actually robbing you from the intelligence that you could actually have around the subject matter. Now, the highest ROI in increasing intelligence is inspiration. So that goes back to the idea section of something. Where are you actually getting your inspiration from? Because inspiration often leads to desire. When you're inspired, you have a desire to do something. When you use ChatGPT, you don't actually get inspired. It just spits out a bunch of ideas for you and then you think, one sounds better than the other and make a decision based off of how something sounds. And if you're doing that, you're losing one of the most key critical moments in finding a good idea, which is desire behind it. If you have desire behind the idea, you're going to make the video because you want to make the video as best as you can. So to increase intelligence, increase your inspo. Now the way that I do that is by two things. I go outside for a walk listening to something that is in informative, whether that be a YouTube video or an Audible book, doesn't matter. The other way that I do that is I substitute the media on my phone that's entertainment-based and just move it to inspirational or educational-based. Because when I see things that spark me, that means that's inspiration coming into me. So if you want to increase your intelligence, find better things to be inspired by, because when you're inspired, you're gonna take action out of desire, and that action will looks something like trying to make a good video around the subject matter. Now, the last thing that you have to do after all of this is done, you need to recap because this is one of the most important things. Again, I said earlier in this video more than once, one of the most important things from learning is actually remembering. And if you can increase the amount your audience remembers, then you're going to make them actually learn more. So in this video, the main objective was to understand scripting is not enough. You need to understand your content. That's the overall premise. Now from there, I gave you a blueprint of how to actually isolate a good idea and start pulling it apart to understand how to speak about it well. And what I did was give you my blueprint mental model that my clients use, and the way that they use it is they have a researcher Give them ideas in which they're interested on. You see, when you are a professional YouTuber, you're actually very dedicated to your niche and you're very in the know of what's happening. For instance, I work a lot in the financial space with people that have large channels that speak on economic releases. So let's say the Federal Reserve cuts rates or there's any big economic news coming out. These guys are well-informed at the moment it happens. They spit it out to their researcher. The researcher does research and they come back with either an outline or some copy or script, whatever it may be. And then the content creator will take that and pull it apart into their own way of speaking in their own idea. But the key thing here is they had the idea from the news that came out and they gave it to their people. In fact, a lot of the times these clients fire their copywriters and researchers, not because the researcher or copywriters are doing a bad job, but because they are actually losing the intimacy by speaking on the subject from their own narrative. Because when you use a script or somebody else to speak for you, you lose the whole intimacy, you lose the whole point of the content itself. And we need to get back to a place of relying on our own competence to speak for ourselves. And the only way to do that is to actually do that. A lot of people are trying to outsource their intelligence. They're trying to outsource the creativity. And when you do that, you lose the connectivity. I'll say that again. If you outsource the creativity, you lose the connectivity, which is the most important thing of doing anything online. That's the whole point. And then once, of course, you finish up your recap, you need to understand that you want a conclusion or CTA. Now, the CTA in this video is if you want to be a professional and you want to take content serious and you want to be better than where you're at now, you would subscribe to this channel because everything I'm telling you is from the most successful people online, true and tested. Inside of their own YouTube models. And everything I'm showing you is exactly the process that they have taught me, that they have gone through to find success on these platforms.
