Suresh, a product manager at Oracle, walks through four steps to validate features before launch: define use cases and target users, whiteboard the UI/UX, build a proof-of-concept for select customers, then formally release. Each step reduces risk and clarifies who benefits.

I'm Suresh. I'm product manager at Oracle. I do a lot of hiking, and this is how I PM. Before you introduce any feature into the product, start with use cases, wireframe, proof of concept, and then finally introduce feature. The reason to follow through some of these steps is to increase the success of this feature in the market. By defining these use cases, we are thinking through Who is the user? What are they going to gain? Who is that market we're going to introduce this particular feature or the module? And then once we define these use cases, it becomes clear on who is going to use it and how users are going to benefit. And then by doing the whiteboarding, it becomes evident on how the UI paradigms, the user experience is going to look like. And then go to the customers with small proof of concepts that help them to visualize and understand how the business flow is. It gives them an opportunity to play with it before it comes into the feature. Once the POC is successful and you get a lot of demand from the customers, that is the point of time you introduce the feature. into the product line, that brings in a great opportunity for product managers to think through these IP laws. What is needed? Why is it needed? Who is going to use it? And then finally introduce that into the market.
