So because I got B5 in the motherfucking half wine cellar, we ain't got no wine bottles behind us all the way in Fort Lauderdale. I need y'all to hit me with some a cappella just to remind the fans.
What the fuck? With that, tell them, Dustin. Well, we would love to, but the fact that Carnell and I's in Florida all the time, Patrick's in Cali, and Brian's in Georgia, we haven't had time to do our a cappella arrangement yet.
Well, say something like church stuff, but it's coming.
The thing is, the real— the thing is with me about that is like everyone's always asking us to do that, but every other interviewer for groups, I never hear them sing, harmonize, do anything.
I make all the groups come.
So I'm just like, so I'm like, let them do that and then we see it, then we'll come back and we'll do something special for you, right? But we're just tired of like being the ones to do it and no one else gets to ask.
Now I saw y'all on another podcast and he played a background vocal for y'all.
I was like, nah. Yeah, yeah, because y'all can really sing though.
Yeah, of course.
Like, that's easy, but it's like, yeah, yeah, but like, I would say anything.
It ain't even got to be one of y'all songs.
Well, Patrick's thing was, uh, I don't know, he just—
he's not in the mood. He's like, look, I'm a singer, but I'm not— let me go ahead and get y'all.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, maybe might hit you a little later or something, and then we'll see.
We'll get them to sing and shit, you know what I'm saying? Now y'all want a drink? Yeah, yeah, ain't no Diddy in this now.
Y'all know y'all his babies now.
Come on now, who want wine?
I'll take some.
You say okay, you'll take some wine? Matter of fact, see if that's a good bottle.
Go ahead, make sure it is. Yeah, smell ain't no—
ain't no too cheap.
Hold on, hold on. No, we're good, we're good.
All right, go ahead, go ahead. Let me pour some more for you. All right, there we go.
I know I like to have fun.
Listen, life too damn I'm sure, because I'm being careful. Y'all came up in here with your mama and your manager.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Now here's the thing, it's not too often, because I run into groups all the time, I interview people all the time, they only like 18th manager. Oh, how do y'all keep the same manager for so long? Like, how did that happen?
We believe in, uh, we started with him. Yeah, we started with him.
Okay.
And we were like, you know, thank you. Like, shit, that— Brian was like, uh, no, I was 7 years old. 7, 8, 9. So like, we were actually literal kids when we started with our manager.
In general.
So it's not even just like some business, it's like, it's a real— like, he literally— like, there's times where we had Christmases where like we would go to his house and he has the bikes and presents and everything laid out for us and stuff like that. So yeah, we go, we go way back.
So he's like a— he's family.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Before Bad Boy, before anything, like, he was the one that would, uh, you know, load us up in his RV would pay for the speakers, you know what I mean? Pay for the stage, you know, designs.
And he making sure he get that on camera.
He wants the receipt.
The manager is behind the scenes on camera making sure he get the receipts and photos.
Say what you got to say.
Say what you got to say.
So he's the one that would like take us around like the schools, like elementary schools, like, hey, can we perform for you guys? Can we just, you know, use the auditorium? And that's kind of really how it started. So salute to—
Salute, cheers! Good management!
Team strong!
Keeping y'all out the lawsuit.
Hey, hey, that part. I'm say you got the real— you got the right ones today. I'mma say that right now.
No, cuz I was— I said I'm so glad I got y'all after the shit happened, right?
Right.
You know, because y'all are very professional. Like I said, it's no controversy. I know a lot of people think when they come on my platform, oh, she gonna say that's not what it is. And then when they see me, they— I'm like, no, I go as far as you let me to go.
You let me— you know what I'm saying?
Half the people tell me what the hell they gonna talk about before before, and I'm like, all right, let's go. I'll just swing it, you know?
Yeah, right.
Y'all ain't got no damn controversy out there that we know of.
Yeah, we just, uh, like good music. We like to do good music, stay out of the way, keep our heads down, and just keep our nose clean, you know? We just— it's about the music. It's really, really for us, like, it's really all about the music, to be honest.
So you never ever, like, find yourself behind the scenes at industry parties and you saw some shit and you like, you know what, let me just mind my business and just sing?
Yeah, I mean, we went to a few parties, but, um, yeah, we would be in and out, you know what I mean? Like, there was a, uh, um, what was the fragrance? Sean John. It was Sean John Unforgivable. Yeah, Unforgivable. When he had the first party, we had a, we had something in a launch thing in New York he was doing. Yeah, and I went to that, um, and everybody was there. Everybody was there. And like, in every section of the room, it was like, um It was like themed out.
Yeah.
And then in the middle of the room, it was like, um, like models, and some of them were a little, you know, they're kind of— it was basically beard, almost, almost nude, you know what I mean? So like, y'all hit any of them? No, no, no. We were so— we were young. We were like on our— it was like on a like one-track mind, like we want to get our music out, we want to, you know, tour the world. Like, we're not really here for all the extra shit, you know what I mean?
Because very rare, because normally in some, whether they're boy band groups or their adult, like, men groups, somebody gonna take the wrong path. Yeah, you notice that, right? And you have these, these stories that they do, they, they do movies on them, Lifetime stories, and you come back and you're like, that's what happened to the group. Like David Ruffin, you know, like, you think about shit like that.
Well, the good thing with us is, like, from the very beginning, are we, like, our mother, you know, like, and, and my aunt Anne and my aunt Trisha, like, we was, you know, basically raised by my mom and my aunties. And they, you know, they didn't want, um, like that. That's really how we got started. Stay out of trouble, basically. Yeah, they didn't want that lifestyle for us. So like, they really instilled like, you know, real values in us. Like, don't, don't be crazy, be respectful, you know what I mean? Like, say yes, sir. Like, we did that. We was raised old school. Okay.
Yeah, I'm from Florida.
Yeah, St. Petersburg.
I'm from Panama City originally.
Okay. Yeah, it's crazy.
I know, but I wasn't allowed to party though.
The spring break? Yes.
Did y'all ever perform out there?
No, never.
Because, you know, MTV used to have the spring break out there and we used to do shows.
No, we never performed in Panama. Okay. Damn. Yeah, that's actually— yeah, yeah. I feel like what's weird is that, like, we performed in Florida, but we didn't perform that much once we left Florida, right? Yeah, it's like we come every now and then. Even the Scream tour, the Miami show, we supposed to be there. We couldn't be there. We had to go in, uh, oh, we was doing a Team Rocket show. Team Rocket show.
Oh damn, we was on two tours at the same time. So y'all, have y'all had a show in Florida since though?
No, no.
I keep telling, like, yo, we need to come back.
String to that.
We got to come back to Florida.
We got Yeah, we'll get one in Florida. Coming back to Florida.
Full circle. Yes, yes, yes, yes. So we got to get y'all— like, y'all are Florida natives.
We'll get one over here.
Yeah, please do, please do. So, all right, so I know you guys have heard everything that's been going on with your former boss.
Yeah, that's the way to put it.
And speaking of Sean John, I spoke to Columbus Short a couple weeks ago.
You asked me to come up short.
We're on the phone and we're trying to get him out here to do an interview, but I think he got some probation issues, something like that. He don't want to tell.
I heard he be knocking people out.
I'm sorry, I don't think he's allowed to leave the state. Like, oh, he's like, he can come here.
And I'm like, I don't like that. He might be short, but boy, he is a real one.
He said to me that Diddy groomed him. Oh. His, of course, his parents weren't as involved. Yeah, he said that Diddy won't tell. Now he did put out a video because I, you know, when you said Sean John, it just had me click to go to ask y'all, you know what I'm saying? But, um, he said that he remembered when he did Stop the Yard, he was one of the hottest actors out there, and Diddy called him right when he was about to do 106 Park, okay? And said, he's like, you got some clothes to wear? He was like, no. He was like, well, go to the Sean John store, get whatever you want, I'll send a car for you, you know, and then take him to 106. And then you know, he just felt like he was just showering him with gifts. Yeah, until he was able to like—
he loved bowling. He felt like when 50 Cent was like, let me take you shopping. Yeah, one of us— fashion— one thing I can remember, this is not like, you know, not one of us or anything, but one thing I do remember is that every time we was at Bad Boy or at the Sean John place, what's his name, Terrence? Was always there. He would be in the Sean John room, be sitting there getting something. Really? Whatever. I remember all this stuff because I was really quiet when I was young. Somebody else— it's not tea, I'm just saying he was always around. Yeah, like always around. So I always found that kind of weird. Why is Terrence here? He's supposed to be— I never even— But it was back in the day. I was quiet. I used to always pay attention to everything. I wouldn't say much, but I was paying attention to everything around me.
Stop being fucking right here. What you doing here?
I don't know what you're talking about. But you just said grooming and clothes and stuff.
Yeah, because you know, when you come from nothing and then you see somebody as big as he is, I mean, he's a fucking mogul.
Yeah.
You know what I'm saying? And then he's got all this money and then y'all small town from Florida. Thank God you had your manager and your mama. You know what I'm saying? Because if your mama from Florida, I know motherfuckers Well, Florida people don't play.
Like, no, my aunt, she was Joe Jackson. She really don't play. Oh yeah, she's like, she's really— she's super loving, but she's no games with her.
Where's your dad?
Texas.
Texas.
Okay.
Yeah, I don't hear y'all talk much about him.
Yeah, yeah, it wasn't much to say. I mean, him and my mom, you know, they just split up a while back, you know what I'm saying? So he wasn't even— he wasn't really involved in like group stuff. So we talked to him periodically. Yeah, which— nothing bad, but personally, it wasn't really involved.
Like, you have a different dad? You don't look like it though.
Yeah, I know we all look alike, but yeah, yeah, we've been, you know, we're all real family. But yeah, I was gonna say, like, I was gonna say non-existent because he wasn't there.
So I mean, yeah, yeah. So did he— did your dads ever like show up once y'all got famous trying to claim some money or some shit?
Oh yeah.
No, she in the back.
No, I actually specifically remember one time, uh, we was at the house in Bridgemill or whatever in Georgia, Canton, and Dad came up there trying to do some dad thing. And I— we just got off the tour, I'm chilling, I'm like, you know, he's like, he's like, so you need to do this or do something. I'm like, I hate that, man. They tell you how to manage it. It's like, you can't really tell me nothing at this point. I mean, yeah, I believe in honoring our parents, but it wasn't a part of that chapter. And then they come in later on to kind of tell you how to run a business or your career. It's like there's no base. Yeah, yeah, I met, talk to him to this day, but it's just, it's, that's separate from this. Yeah, exactly. You know what I mean?
I can relate to that. I got 4 dads.
Oh, how you got—
yeah, you know how most people have like, you know, your dad got 4 wives. My mama was really about that. She made sure we had a daddy to replace a daddy with a daddy.
So you got like half sisters?
They all show up. Yeah, they all show up to all my shows and stuff.
They're all still supportive of you though. So basically he had the best daddy? Is that what you're—
uh, no, I don't think that's my mama. She'd be like, that nigga ain't shit. I'm telling my sis.
That reminds me of our family a little bit.
We're from Florida. Nationality though, because I know like y'all got, you know, good hair and shit. You know, I know I'm gonna get dragged for saying that, but your features, black and white.
My mom, she's— she has Indian in her too, a lot of Crow, they're from Texas, so it's Blackfoot, Cherokee, Crow, you know, on the back side. And on the white side, it's like German, Russian, Irish. So it's like a— yeah, we gotta—
yeah, have y'all done like your blood test? And stuff?
No, um, no, we just, we just kind of looked at like family. Like, uh, our grandpa on our dad's side had, had like a family tree thing that he was building in. He had a lot of information. They speak German at the table. Yeah, so yeah, I mean, we knew.
So honestly, how do you feel about everything that's transpired with your former boss? Are you surprised?
Yeah, you are. Um, yeah, well, yeah, growing up back, uh, in the day when we were around Bad Boy offices and around Puff all the time, like we didn't see a lot of that crazy, crazy shit that they got going on now, you know, like all the stuff that they're doing. Like, we were, we were focused on— we were in studio. Well, anytime we saw him, it was in a work environment.
Yeah.
So, because again, people aren't keeping in mind, or people should keep in mind, like, when we was in Baton Rouge, we were very young. So even if that stuff, type of shit was going on, it's like, we wouldn't know. We were too— we wouldn't know anyway. We were so young, you know what I mean? Usher and Yes, but I don't think they had— the thing is, yeah, we had our mom, our manager, we had, we had daughters. Yeah, but at the same time, we don't play either, right? Okay, we don't play. We were so open on tour. On tour, like, mom would, you know, have dudes like try to get at her. We all 5, hey, what you doing? You ain't going to my mom, bro. Get your ass whooped if you do that. Like, so we, we were We don't play. But on that thought alone, if you notice the track people that were signed to him, none of that. We don't have none of those type of— he didn't seem like he was messing with his artists. You know, they have all those stories and I pay attention to that, like, you know, because they might have gotten the different thing. Puff was like, okay, this is boss business for us. Yeah, yeah, it's like the way other artists got in. Yeah. Other way other artists got in was different how we got into that. Yeah, it's like we were really protected, you know, if that was the case. We were so protected and we were so business back then. Like, like Kelly said, like, our schedule were grown men ass schedules. Like, wake up early at 4:30 in the morning, go, go to the radio station, do a drop, do an interview, do that 5 times, and then fly to 106 and then fly to Scream Tour while we're doing the Teen People Rock 'n' Shop Tour. At the same time. Then we're shooting a video, we're making up our own choreography. So like, we were just constantly on the move. Yeah. So there was no room for like no playing around like that unless we're on our tour bus. Then, you know, I have— you can decompress a little bit. But we were constantly moving, right? All the time, right? Like, we were cool with his kids, you know. We were cool with Christian and Quincy. And yeah, we were close with Quincy. So, you know, every once in a while, like, we would go kick with them at their spot or something. Sometimes we would see him, but he was popping in and out. I was there a lot, I ain't gonna lie. Yeah, I was there a lot as a child, so I experienced a lot because me, we just hung out. And, um, you know, everything was cool though. Ain't nothing there, nothing ever happened. But I will say this, for some tea, I'll give you a little wine over here. This could be like, I'm thirsty. But I remember, um, we didn't even talk about this, I'm gonna say anyway, but I remember we were in the car with Quincy, um, in LA. Oh yeah, was it you? Yeah, all of us. We were all going to the club, another friend. We were driving down, um, uh, the highway in LA. It was The One, I think. And for some weird reason, like, we're driving— well, he's driving and we're just, you know, just chopping it up. Who is driving? Quincy was driving and like, bro, he just got this car and like the entire— such a weird— rolled off on the freeway. On the freeway, we're going and I'm saying it's making a weird noise. I'm like, Quincy, what's up with your car? Like, and he was like, yeah, I took it to the mechanic, he said something's just rubbing against something, everything's fine though. 5 minutes later, the whole wheel just— wow, we're just arguing. The whole Jeep just It was crooked. We're at sparks flying in the back. Yeah, they started like, Quincy, like, I don't know how the dude did it, but like, we managed to like get over to the side. Yeah, but I'm talking about sparks was like flashing past the window. Yeah, and the tire was just like, damn, bro. But I always thought that was like— keep in mind, he told me those wheels were custom-made wheels with custom-made bolts, so you couldn't just take that thing off. It ain't just gonna unravel, you know what I mean? Funny thing about it was when the tire came off it went over to the other side of the highway. It didn't hit nobody. And then there was a big-ass mountain with a cross right there. You know that highway with that cross, like, on that hill?
Yeah. Okay.
So, like, it was, it was just, it was weird. It was like, it could be nothing, but it was just—
somebody set his ass up or something?
I don't know. I don't know. We can't say. We can't say.
But it was just too—
but I don't think they were trying to say— I don't think they were trying to get Quincy, of course. Like, Quincy's a cool dude.
You thought Diddy was supposed to be in that car or something?
I don't— you know, we don't know. We don't know what— all we have is a story. That was actually our story. That was really actually happened. All the speculations beyond that is beyond us. Yeah, like the internet can connect dots.
Did you guys ever meet Kim?
Yes, of course. Me and Kim, we were around each other all the time. I was around Kim all the time. She's a Sagittarius, I'm a Sagittarius. She was healthy, perfectly fine, loved because he loved her. Obviously they all loved her. She adored her very much. Yeah, yeah, it was really cool.
Yeah, pneumonia at 40.
I do not know. I know that's one thing, right? We're like everyone else, we're like— and one thing I can tell you is that like I have a friend, uh, she was, she, she was a babysitter for the girls and all that stuff, but also family friend and all that. Oh, I know he's on my— and she went up there, you know, and she was gonna contemplate on if she was gonna stay in Atlanta or go over there and take care of the girls. And she did. And it was just— I don't know, she was the one that found, you know, apparently found her. So it's kind of— it's kind of— it's kind of like, you know, up there. I don't want to get— I just don't want to be the one saying all this stuff.
It's just like, why everybody else?
We're here now. Yeah, you know, it was just kind of crazy that that happened though. I'm not speculating either, I'm just saying, you know. Yeah. And it's kind of— it's just like, you know, it's a wild, you know, rest in peace Kim, you know. She was a great person though, you know. So yeah, I heard that she's trying to, uh, I think she actually got a separate lawsuit or something. Oh yeah.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Well, there's a lead.
Is it already popped? Is the lawsuit already popped? See, that's why I'm not in this.
Don't know. We've been far removed from Bad Boy like a while ago, you know what I mean? We left at like 2009. It took a year for us to get a release. We've been gone.
You ain't no guest no more.
First one was small. All right, all right.
What is the lawsuit for that? The— I guess the nanny is—
that part I really don't know, to be honest.
Um, wait a minute, I think I know who you're talking about. She does have a lawsuit. She's a nanny. She was talking about unpaid wages and, and yeah, something like that.
Yeah. Yes. Oh damn, you gonna say all that stuff?
Yeah.
All right, Mom, why don't you come sit right here? Hey, Mom pays attention to that. Let her respond. Florida now. Florida, don't forget.
I'm gonna have to interview her when she's done with that lawsuit because I need to know. That's crazy. Like, because everybody was like in shock because she was so young and healthy and it's like pneumonia?
Yeah, it's very unfortunate. Yeah, no, we read everything else you guys are reading. We're just like Yeah, you know, yeah, like honestly, I've seen all this stuff now, it's just like, damn, it's like we heard, we heard stuff throughout the years like everybody else has, you know what I mean? But yeah, to actually like see what's going on now, it's like we're kind of taken aback a little bit in shock somewhat, you know what I mean? Because it's like, because we was there, like there's, there's things you hear, but to see it actually like confirmed and like this whole thing with Cassie coming out, it's just like, wow. But if all that stuff is true, to me person, I feel like we dodged a bullet. It's like, it's like I kind of see how, or I could see how Bad Boy itself would like drop the ball as far as like B5's career because he never came to one show. Yeah, never. Like from the Scream tour to the Teen People, like, but when he came to the 106 Park, uh, he promised us screening. When he came to 106 Park screening for the first time, he saw the fans like how they were reacting and he lost his mind. Like that was a real reaction. Like, bro, you're like 2 albums late. Yeah, that was like a real reaction, like a genuine reaction from him. Like, he— it was his first time like just seeing, experiencing, experience a B5 like fandom, you know what I mean? Crazy, because our fans used to pick it outside of Bad Boy office. Yeah, in the cold in New York in the winter, which you know how New York is. It is freezing out there, you know what I mean? So the fans knew and everyone kind of, yeah, knew he was doing like the group like business justice on the business side. Yeah.
Yeah, because I was saying, like, it was like, y'all, y'all seem like y'all had like a promising career.
Yeah, we were, we were bust. We were literally blowing up BET's servers. Yeah, their servers are getting blown. Breaking for 106 Park, breaking them. But we never made number one. It's because we had it.
We didn't have that.
We didn't have that 60K. They didn't want to throw us some more clothes. That on top of some other stuff, right? Like what? You know, I'm just saying, 106 Park is a teen show and we were the only teens on 106 Park and we're busting servers. There's no way we should not— where were we? I just got like number— oh, we were number 2. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You made it to like number 6 Cardinal. Yeah, number 2 once. Give me that. It wasn't number 1 is my point.
What was the money like for y'all doing all that work though?
I mean, we would make money off the tour, we'll make money off our merch.
He's ready to talk.
We never got paid for one record sale, none of that. We never got paid for the writing that we did on, uh, the second album, Don't Talk —this list. We know our math, we did our math, we know what's owed, you know what I mean? Like, people could talk about, oh, recoup this, recoup that. Y'all niggas don't know what the hell was in our contracts and what we got going on on our bills and things like that. So y'all don't know how much we had to recoup, and you also don't know how much was made. So exactly, also, like, to stand down on that, I'm sick and tired of everybody online saying that we only have one Hit Records. We had two, uh, we all know that's the thing was is that the second album wasn't even promoted properly, properly, because they lost. We, we bet, we begged them to tell them not to put out our album. Kanye's and 50 Cent, uh, beat me when they had to do their place on 9/11. It was like, dude, let's like, dude, why, why would y'all do that? It's Kanye and 50 Cent, they're battling against each other, like who's gonna be the biggest. Like, yo, we don't need 5 in there. Some kids who aren't hip-hop at all, right? So it's just like, so they put our release date on the same day as that, that album. Yeah, it made no sense to do that. And there was some shit going on for sure. Yeah, dumb decisions being made. And now, and not even including our alternative career path, which had all the Disney catalogs that we've been a part of.
Yeah, I was gonna say, y'all, y'all really made some money with Disney.
Disney was crazy. Like, everything we did with Disney was number one. Everything. Like, I think we're the only group— I think we were the only group on— and correct me if I'm wrong, Jim— I think we're the only group that had like 6 singles like on Radio Disney, all number 1, going at the same time. Not number 1, but we were the first one. Not, not a part of Disney as well. We're the first group to do that. Yeah, especially not being a part of— and we weren't even records or anything. Like, keep in mind, we're bad at really like this time. We were bad with artists, and Disney actually wanted to sign us. Like, Hollywood wanted us. They're like, we got a TV show for y'all. We got a whole setup that we can actually do for y'all. And what did Bad Boy say? No, no. But why? The real question is why they do. Yeah, they take that because, you know, they're a company, they got to keep moving. They give it to the Jonas Brothers. That's how the Jonas Brothers, you know, got that show, that merch, all that shit. Yeah, basically, basically the whole, the whole game, the whole rollout that Jonas Brothers has was for us. You know what I mean? Yeah, we don't blame them. It's like, shout out to Jonas Brothers. Yeah, yeah, shout out to them, you know. But Bad Boy, But once again, like, those moments where like you're supposed to press the button and do the right thing, we've had multiple moments of that and they just dropped the ball. But you know what's crazy now? And back then I used to, I used to like rack my brain trying to figure out what the hell is going on. But now after what's transpired and we all see, it's clearly, we see it's like, we see that Pub is like, um, spread thin. Oh, not just spread thin, but like, you know what, as far as his label, his ass cheeks look spread thin.
I knew he was using the wrong word for that.
Listen, right? You made me lose my train of thought. Oh, my bad, my bad. Sabotage, or like— well, I just made me realize, like, from all that's going on, from thinking about it, every Bad Boy artist didn't really get their, their, their full— no, just do, you know. So it just showed me that, like, that was on purpose. Somebody was suppressing every group, every artist on Bad Boy, and little did we know, I never knew it would be like Puff himself doing You know what I mean? And that's what it felt like. And that's what it felt like. You could be big but not bigger than me, just big enough to help me go, right? Just big enough to me to make money off of you. That's big enough to wear.
That's really deep what y'all saying. Yeah, it's the truth.
If you look back at it, look at the history. 112 should be popping right now. They were amazing. They had hit after hit. Them dudes can sing. They had hit after hit, you know what I'm saying? Album after album. Who else? We can go down the line. So Puff had great eye. He had a great eye for talent, you know what I mean? Like, killed it every time. Yeah, but it's just as far as like the business and making sure that artist was successful to the peak of that they could be, like, that's— well, think about it, like, think about it, like, Bad Boy itself is different from all these other labels because Tommy Mottola is not trying to be in the video and talk and be an artist himself. Like, his success is way back in the day. Yeah, like, like, their, their success is their artists Puff's success is like Puff's success. Puff's success, like, I'm the mogul, I'm also the artist, I'm also this. So it's like, Bad Boy was different from them. Like, it was—
and that's why Suge was in his ass. Why you always got to be in the video?
Yeah, and I get it. I never used to understand that, even back then when I used to see that. I used to think Suge was just hating on him, but now I'm like, it all makes sense.
Suge actually feels sorry for him right now.
He said, listen, I don't feel sorry for nobody that does anything bad, anything like— I don't feel sorry for nobody. Reap what you sow, you know what I mean? Yeah, that's how I feel.
Yeah, he was like, I guess it's a shot to the culture of music because he had so many acts up under him and nobody prospered. And his biggest artist today ain't even here. And they're, you know, rumors are swirling that he has something to do with that.
Yeah, he was gonna leave the label label. Yeah, and that's something we never knew. Yeah, I heard Biggie had an album that they released on a different label, right? Biggie? Well, I heard— I don't know if it's true— that like, I don't know if it was Suge or somebody, they were trying to give Biggie like $40 million or something, I heard, to like—
yeah, way more money.
Yeah, way more than what Puff was getting. And then all of a sudden all that stuff happened, you know. It's just, it's just weird, man. It's just weird. Um, I just feel like I'm just glad like We are the way we are, and we stuck to our guns. And, you know, when we came to Bad Boy, we was already a group. And that's another thing that's different about us. A lot of artists like Hennessy King, uh, Making a Band, which, you know, we— they're cool. Yeah, no, I don't have nothing bad to say about it. Yeah, yeah, Day 26, none of them. But the difference with us is we came to Bad Boy already who we were, a group. We were already— we was already creating our fan base. Yeah. And versus them, like, they kind of got put together by Puff, you know what I mean? So here we are. Here we are. Yeah, which is why I feel like we can like always take our brand, whether it's from Bad Boy to Disney or Motown, like we can always be like, well, at the end of the day, we're B5. We have our own family. We got our own family.
Y'all still have a very— a fairly like young look. Like, yeah, how old are you guys, if you don't mind me asking?
Like, how old are you? We're in the early 30s now. Yeah, early 30s. I'm the youngest and I'm Yeah, but again, we started so young. We got two decades. I got signed to Bad Boy at like 7 or 8 years old. I was like 10 when we got signed.
Yeah, we were 10. Wasn't your hair red back then? Yeah, it was.
It was dyed red with a part. I didn't—
I thought you were like a real ginger.
Yes, I never even thought about that. That was the reason This is why I did it. And I found out that he's not my brother at all, like 24 hours before the video shoot. So you should do that.
Oh, like, you know what, the video—
all I do videos. Yeah. So if you notice, just, just a random fact. Oh, you want to get this off your chest? Oh yeah, I want to get this off my chest. Well, it's just about hair. Oh, okay. My point is Yeah, because what's his name flamed me for it. Oh yeah, yeah, Tyler, Tyler the Creator. Yeah, and now that I'm hearing about it, maybe he was just trying to flirt with me back then, you know what I mean? Now that's a problem. Whatever. So look, I thought you was cute.
No, you want, you want 8-1-8 or you want wine?
Yeah, let me get a little more wine. But my point is, um, you want some more wine?
You're here.
I know y'all. Oh yeah, so back here saying no shit that's going go viral.
Right.
So, all right, take the gloves off. So to my point with the whole hair, I'm telling— explaining to all the fans out there a reason. If you see all I do, my hairstyle was literally like Dumb and Dumber, straight down Caesar cut. Yeah, you know what I mean? That was Puff's idea in the beginning of the video where I'm in the brown talking and I got my hair spiked up cool how I wanted it at the time, you know. That was me. I changed it after he, after he left. He left the video shoot. So when he left the video shoot, I'm in there spiking my shit back up. And that's why my hair is like that. But then when I'm walking off the bus, you see it straight down. That was Puff's idea. He's like, nah, playboy, put your— he was trying to make it like more just, you know, I guess urban at the time. Yeah, but like Dustin, out of all of our hair, Dustin's got those straight Indian jet black.
Like like, you know, like a true pop band, but I think he was trying to keep y'all.
Yeah, so R&B. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But really more so like urban R&B more than pop. We had the pop splash. Also like R&B pop, honestly. When we came to Bad Boy, we came influenced by like NSYNC, Backstreet Boys. It was a blend of all of it, and we are a blend to this day. We're still a blend. Yeah, but when when you try to box us into one image. Yeah. And then our career is pushing us out of that box, you know. You just gotta let that naturally happen. Yeah, exactly. I think you get like the roots is that core urban, and then everything else sprouted up is like, you know, I can trickle and pop, trickle into this or whatever, but I always got to maintain that core. Yeah, because that's the realness, and that's our— that's the, that's the vibe, that's that's cool, that's swag, you know, you got to keep that. Otherwise, absolutely, even like, you know, you need corny boy being like, yeah, oh, you know, that's the reason why like most boy bands in America don't work, you know. I went on TikTok the other day and typed in boy group, nothing but K-pop artists come up, you know.
So it's just like, it's crazy because y'all tried to tap into the K-pop market?
No, as far as like trying to do this, as far as trying to do that music, no. No, yeah, no, it's, it's not because honestly there, if you think about it, that's exactly— yeah, but you got Freddie Mertens and people like that, they're all going over there to produce for them. There's a lot of American artists who produce soulful music, R&B music, and they go to Korea and write for them because look, they're not dumb, they know what the hot shit is. So they're like, we need, you know, they need the American producers, you know what I mean? I know I, I'm personally friends Few of them who work over there, like right now, so. I know. So are y' all saying we need to stop letting our people. No, I'm not saying. Help that culture out. Do we need to? No, cuz it's cool. Like, the whole. The whole K pop culture is great. The whole K pop culture. We're not trying to take out K Pop. They gotta have their money. But that's. Honestly, I think. I think some of the K pop is cool because I'm. We grew up on, like, You know, we hear like you got to be a triple threat, you got to bust your ass. Like, we would hear like certain groups would be in the warehouses working their ass off. So singing, dancing, and performing at the same time is hard as fuck to do. Yeah. So anyone who can pull it off, I always tip my hat to them, whether you're American, K-pop. Yeah, anything, you know what I mean? Even if it was— even if a Numa Noodle came out there doing— I'm like, hey man, y'all tapping into that real shit. So I would respect that. Yeah. That's always—
I think it's amazing that you guys are all still on the same path, because normally you'll say, you know, you'll see one, but I'm gonna go be Beyoncé. Yeah. Have you had that?
I mean, no, we haven't had a point to where like, I'm just gonna leave the group and do my own, do my own thing. Like, everyone definitely has plans for solo projects. Patrick's got a whole album done. Dustin's got a whole album done. Like, I'm working on stuff. Carnell has already released the, like, a fire EP. Like, but it was never with us.
It's like where you're not coming back.
We feel like brothers. He said it, he said something one time that I thought was funny, but I feel like it kind of made sense with us. But it's like we're kind of like the Avengers in a sense. Like, we can off— go off and do our own shit if we want to, but really the love is like, yeah, and it comes together in the group. Yeah, yeah. We want to take something over, you know what I mean? And we're not in it like whoever wants to do something solo, like they got support from everyone. Like, no one's looking at someone like like, well, you trying to go— it's like, no, bro, do your thing. What do you need me to do to help it? Yeah, like, you— like, Patrick, he shot a video all night, you know, like, I'm posting it, I'm gonna promote it, you know what I mean? He was there, I was there. So we respect each other's diversity, and everyone has different strengths in so many different fields. So even if it is solo, why not add that to that person?
What if we do, like, you got a tour coming up, right? You're going to be planning your tour, and then on the tour, like, when y'all have, like, you know, It's like y'all do group songs and then you do a song from your album. Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
All of that. All that's a conversation. I've been asked that already.
Yeah, because y'all fans are really pissed at y'all right now. I'll be watching the comments because y'all are dry, especially when y'all drop a song and then they'll be like, okay, how many comments we got? Because y'all really like impacted a lot of people. So, and they're like, well, y'all drop a single and then disappear.
Yeah, yeah, that's the team. We needed a team. Well, and what it really is, for the past 10 years it's literally just been us 5. Yeah, working it. So like the last song, Do That, that was literally us like pulling together our resources, writing it, doing it ourselves, getting the video guy. Like we did that ourselves. So like, it's like, I— we get frustrated too with this start, but it was just— it's awful. We were— in a perfect world, we would love to drop a video every 4 weeks, a new song every 4 weeks. But with us being independent, and like Patrick said, we didn't have a— like, even the management wasn't in place at the time. We just got our manager Jim back in the fold and all that, along with other guys. So with that being said, like, in order— in order for us to keep up this, uh, demand independently was hard. Like, the videos cost like $10,000 each time, you know what I mean?
Like, shoot, I know they show videos on the hood. Wait, don't get my boys—
but you can't do that. But we can't do that because we got this mainstream image already. You know what I'm saying? And our quality, our quality is only at certain levels.
But if you storytell, everybody will watch it. If you tell a story, y'all fans are all— y'all music is about relationships and stuff like that. So you don't necessarily have to dance all the time and put together those big productions. You break it down, you tell a story, a love story, because you guys put out love songs. And tell it in a story, people will watch it because they're connecting with the story. And those are like $1,000 a shoot.
I mean, if it can— well, look, the thing is, to do that video, we shot for under $5,000. So we do try to like do that, but it's, you know, we're very— it's just to continue it, to continue a project independently, like you, you need a bag.
Like NBA, you need some kind of bag.
Our fans deserve like the best of what we can get right now.
But they want y'all though. They would rather have y'all or have nothing. And when I think of independent, I'm gonna be honest with you, I cannot stand this man. I think his lyrics are trash. Oh boy. He has a great personality though, and he sells. NBA YoungBoy, he shoots videos with his iPhone in his kitchen just for his fans. Y'all put out a song a cappella, or just, you know, get in, you know, just record, throw a storytelling video together, one of y'all sitting to the side leaning on the wall. You ain't got to do it. Just giving your fans that music to stream.
No, I agree with you 100%, but I think, I think with us like coming from like a major going into— Yeah, spoiled. Yeah, yeah, a lot. Yeah, I won't even say that. I actually just agree with you. It's not spoiled, we're just like used to a certain, certain caliber, and then when you switch it, it's just like, like we still have a place that we're trying to go to. Yeah, you know what I mean? And we just want everything. I'm a Virgo, man. I could never do like something like something that I feel like we could have done better, it will bug the shit out of me. Same. That's why we don't need all the money in the world to do something, but we just wanted to look and feel a certain way because our fans deserve that, because we know it's a stop and start and we hate that as well. Yeah, you know what I mean? So wait, but to hear that in this interview, let's let this be known, that's never going to happen.
I'm getting on their ass.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But with that being said, I don't think the stopping stops were— you're not finished? No, I wasn't. But no, no, no, finish. I was just saying, moving forward, moving forward, like now that we got the new team locked in and all that, like new shows out, uh, New York, June 27th at the harbor. Y'all come out. But you know what I'm saying? So with that being said, like we just got— we're able to move, move in a more efficient way again, you know what I mean? Literally. Also I don't want to keep saying that, we back, we back, because it's not that. It's we've been here, we've been, we've been doing stuff. It's just like, you know, team is consistent because the we back and then boom, what's going on?
You guys supposed to be back?
And then, you know, we don't want this time. This time we made sure, we made sure that we got that stop and start. It's not gonna happen. We have a new team now with, you know, our manager who's been here from the beginning. Okay, so that shit ain't happening. Got it no more. Yeah. And what else? I just wanted that to be known to all our fans out there, that all the ones that would be like, oh, when's it gonna be? How long till the next single? Trust me, we got so many singles and songs right now, it's crazy. Make it his fans. And just to give everybody, um, like insight of how that industry looks like, like we're independent. The industry has changed so much from CDs to streams, and of course the artists that are assigned to major labels can survive those transitions. But when you're independent and the whole industry is changing its system for like the third time, that does take some time for us to calibrate and be adaptive to that system. So now that we have the team, we understand the system, now we're just able to move and provide that consistency. Yeah, because I didn't want to give the impression that we're not putting out stuff because it's not— because we're perfectionists and not good enough. It wasn't just that factor, right?
You know, right? So I was damn sure gonna ask because I was like, ooh, they I made shit.
That's our main thing that we hated. Like, damn, we wish we could just drop this, drop this, drop this, but they couldn't— we couldn't explain that to them.
But let me get in y'all business a little bit. Dating. Yes. I ain't see nobody on scene with y'all. Like, y'all didn't date no other, like, celebrities and stuff on tour? You didn't have a Sierra Bow Wow moment?
Nobody? I feel like Brian had a little bit. Oh God, sorry to call you out, but like, yeah, yeah, there was a few— what's going on, Jess? A few girls he would talk to, but it never got any serious. Yeah, it was, it was teen. We're big on like, on any, like, other type of celebrities. Like, we're— we don't like— there's little Disney girls, you know, we're around the Disney team. So, um, you know, Ryan had Miley, um, after him for a little while. Yeah, I did. Oh shit. Yeah, I had Kiki Palmer. So you would have been Cyrus, or she would have been breeding or something.
So it was Hannah Montana, right?
Who's actually a really dope person. Oh yeah, well, we kind of— we kind of were— me and Des were friends with Ali and AJ. Hold on one second. We were cool with Ali and AJ. I was kind of cool with Kiki Palmer first. He was talking with Kiki and Is she your type too? Oh yeah. Yeah, so you liked Kiki a lot? Yeah, I think, I think Kiki's beautiful. Yeah, but, um, Kiki is cool. Back then, honestly, like, she kind of reminded me, like, not too long ago, like, she was trying to talk to me, but back then we were doing so much, like, I just just kind of went over my head. Yeah, but we, you know, we're cool. She got somebody just like him. Y'all pray for her baby daddy.
We want to see the baby.
Yes, can you see the baby?
Listen, see the baby. But Molly's tired.
She never gave her a chance?
No, I mean, you never kissed him.
He actually never even told us that much about it. So, yeah, it was short-lived. That's why I don't talk about it. Short-lived. The girl bouncing Nick and all other— Brian and Nick Jonas. She was, she was like, well, she was going with Nick, but she had— she just saw Brian. Oh my God, he's so much fun. Because we just killed this dinner. It was just a quiet person, like, oh my God. Yeah, yeah, I know. So he was super quiet. and Brian was like, oh hey, you know. And so she's a Sagittarius girl, so she's like, oh shit, she's breaking the whole shit. So she's just telling everybody, hey, I'm going out with— everyone was like, hey, is Brian going out with Miley Cyrus? Because I had friends telling me, I'm like, I don't know. This was like Sidekick AIM days. Oh yeah, yeah, all those days.
That would have been a good lick right there. Listen, anybody else? Any celebrity? Me?
I was too young and quiet, man. I was a lame. I ain't going to lie. I was a lame.
Who is a lame man? I was really quiet.
You was lame, bro. You just very— it took me forever to hit puberty. I hit puberty. What you mean? That's the normal age, bro. I hate the puberty when he hit puberty.
What does that mean? What do you— what happens when a guy officially eventually hits puberty.
I don't know. I feel like it gets a little more active when you start— you should be like 13, 14 years old when you hit— as a man, it hit puberty. It's not 16 and a half. Yeah, I think it's awesome. That's what I'm saying. I was a little— you know, I look like I was 12 years old, but I was 18. Yeah, late bloomer. I was super late bloomer.
So when did you guys start dating? Okay. Yeah, so you guys were having groupies on the tour? You were hitting groupies?
We have always— that's crazy. You know, it's crazy, we weren't, we weren't hitting groupies.
Oh dang, Mommy!
I mean, look, I'll say, I'll say, I'll say, I'll say we weren't hitting any groupies on tour. I was a little older at the time. Dustin should talk, you know, Dustin's got something. He got a story. No, but, but I'll say this, he was close, but you know, with all their homeboys, Pretty Ricky, and you know, so they—
oh shit, I just ran into Pleasure P last week.
Yeah, Pleasure's the homie. Pleasure's the homie. Pleasure's the homie. Yeah, he's gonna come to the show.
I love Pretty Ricky, bro. I didn't even recognize him because, you know, he's always had like this, you know, he keeps himself shaped. He had a full beard. I said, who the fuck is that? He was like, it's Pleasure P. I'm like, oh shit.
Yeah. That's my little a little older, so he had a little more fun on the tours.
Oh, okay.
Well, yeah, I was like 17. Yes, 18 at the time. So I was actually like on the bus with Pretty Ricky, like I'm freestyling with Spectacular and Slick, and you know, we're, we're smoking on the bus and all that type of shit. So those are the most wild Florida boys. Yeah, you can ever meet. They're probably reserved now, but back in the day, wow, seeing them on tour Crazy. Everybody just be like, that's why I love you. Oh yeah. Wow. If any fans are listening, they went to that Miami show, you know, I remember like the cops would tell Pretty Ricky, don't flash the fans your dicks. And they would do it. Like, like they would do it. They didn't care. I feel like that was part of like why that appeal with them, like they just didn't give a fuck, you know what I mean? But they were wild and they got— then the cops show up on stage, they were trying to take them off that night. They were definitely— I'm not gonna say it too much, but yeah, they were definitely all dangerous. Okay, sorry, sorry guys.
No, they're gonna be like, tell more, listen.
But the reason it worked, because they were literally like so opposite of us. Yeah, okay.
They were so opposite. I was gonna say, you guys are so well mannered and reserved. Like, it's— I don't run into this type of energy ever.
Really? You know what's crazy? We used to get that all the time. We run around, people like, there's something different about y'all. Y'all got a weird— y'all got some aura, like crazy aura about y'all. Like, we can't put our finger on it. Like, we used to— I literally used to hear this all the time on tour, and I'll be like, what the fuck are they talking about?
It's not weird, it's just y'all are like— when you're lit, you're living a rock star lifestyle. And you guys are like, like nuns.
Like, like, oh, we're definitely not nuns.
But when you see what spills over, you don't have a—
it's not 12 o'clock in the morning. We just know how to— we just know how to be. I think we got a vision. Yeah, I think that's what it is. I think our mom gave us, you know, they instilled some good values, good morals, and, you know, like, even like when we— if we got big, they're like, don't get big beheaded though. You're still just, you're still just a human. Everyone shits, eats, sleeps, gets depressed. It's all just normal parts of human beings. But yeah, there's some people that just want— they take that and like, yeah, yeah, they let it get taken away. Yeah. And they get surrounded by yes men, and then their sound gets diluted. They actually start sucking, but they don't understand why they're sucking because their team around them was like, oh, you're doing great, yeah, everything is good. And that's how you get lost and start killing yourself. You know, which— go ahead— which brings me back to the point: when you get that influence, what are you going to do with it? In this whole conversation, why we're here today, watching somebody fall from that, you know, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. That's because you didn't— somewhere along the line, you compromised. Very true. And we don't want to compromise. And that's what I say, it's about a vision. We know where we want to go. We know the impact we want to make on our fan base. We've always had a really authentic relationship with our fan base. And that's something I don't think we're ever going to let go or compromise anything for. Exactly. Yes. That was good. That was good bringing it back. Yeah. Nice, Brian. I like that. I like that. This might be the most podcast that all these cheers going on.
He's like sitting in the center. He's really calm. He's like, I got something.
I just enjoying the moment. Yeah, I can tell he's just walking the earth, right? You want to go here?
Is he the rock? Is he—
oh, he's Nature Boy.
That's Nature Boy right there. He's Nature Boy.
I could see. Oh yeah, I was in a Nature Boy. I was passive-aggressive boy, so I'll just be like super— you're always in between. So, but like, it's a little different now, obviously, right, getting older. But, but I'm still in that in-between. Like, I see— I can see both sides. Because I was—
no, what I was gonna ask was— no, that was gonna be my next question. Like, your first Personality, like, since you guys seem to mesh really good, right? But you're— but you all look like, even though like you guys have very different like personas and faces and stuff, but like, what is your personality? Not like your hobbies or something, like what if somebody were to meet you, get close to you?
Patrick's silly as hell. Patrick's silly as hell. Go ahead, go ahead. Better explain. I'm a Virgo, so like I'm very silly at times, but at other times I'm very serious. Yeah, and that's true. Say that. Okay, okay. Yeah, as much as goofy as you can be, you can definitely be just as much very— yeah, yeah. Okay, me, it all depends on who I'm around. I'm very outgoing and, and a goofy person, but it all depends. Then I have my days where I'm just late, and I was— yeah, and I would say I have my days My days where I'm like chill, I may not say that much. Go with the flow. Yeah, you know, it all depends on where I'm— what I'm feeling like at that moment, you know. So yeah. Okay, Brian, I'm changing every day. I cannot describe myself. Sometimes I'm looser, that's something a little more reserved for you. Okay, but, um, lately I've noticed I've been more task-driven, maybe because I'm taking this project seriously. But I think I'm gonna kind of like decompress. He's also, he's also goofy a little bit as well. Like, don't, don't let this right here just fool you. Like, he's just like, you know, you know, I got my notebook out and I'm like, you know, no, he's a goofball sometimes. Okay, what about you? Uh, shit, uh, for me, I would just say I'm pretty chill for the most part. Um, down to earth, if I can say that. Yes. You know, um, I try to keep my cool as much as I can, you know, when I can. Until he doesn't. Until I don't. Until I don't. And it's hard to calm me down. Between him and them, they keep their cool super long. Until they don't. And then when they don't, it's like, okay, back up. It takes a lot. Yeah, it takes a lot for them, but when they do, it's like a fucking tornado.
What about you? What's your personality like?
Um, that's big bro. Yeah, that's big bro. I'm making sure everything is— I'm on top of everybody, making sure everybody in line, basically. But other than outside of that, I think I'm just pretty— I don't know, I think I'm a pretty balanced person. Goofball. I'm definitely goofy. Goofy as hell. I'm goofy as hell. Um, like, very— likes to have fun. Like to have fun. I like getting people out the house. Yeah, he's the most bougie, I'd say, out of everybody. And not a strong poker face. Why do I— very easy to read. Very easy to read. That's what he likes. All right, I guess.
Yeah, I'm gonna go a little deeper. What are your— like, what pisses you off?
Uh, what pisses me off is personally is not being heard or taken seriously on certain, um, subjects. That's what pisses me off. And also laziness. I hate when people are lazy and then they try to come in at the end and try to like assert some type of authority. Like your dad? I'm like, back off. You don't even know shit. I'm sorry. I'm here now. Well, that pisses me off. What about you? I'm work-oriented. Yeah, it pisses me off, um, not being respected, not being realized of what I, what I bring. Um, yeah. And, um, ignorance, for one, for one. And people that think they're educated and ain't really, like, when it comes to just like certain—
like Amanda Seales. I wasn't talking about Amanda Seales. She overly educated.
It's just like, you know, like And I like realness. I can't like— like that fake shit. I can't stand— I can't do fake. Yeah, yeah. If you know me, if you know a Sagittarius, I can't do nothing fake. You gotta be real, you gotta be authentic. It can't be— it gotta be— gotta be cool. It can't be lame, you know. I just don't like— okay, you know, it's just what I like. And yeah, that's it, that's it. What about you? Injustice pisses me off. Oh shit, you should have been a cop. A lawyer or something. You're about to turn into Batman? Like, I just— but I'm kind of the same. What it is, I have a big heart for people in the world, and I really feel what different groups of people go through, and I can see why that is, and I just be wanting to fix it or hold the accountability for that. And so that really pisses me off because, yeah, we're all family, we're all sharing this world together, and I feel like like we should all be enjoying it together. So I would say injustice. And, uh, well, you can't really do much about that. You can't control that. It's kind of the way of the world, man. So it's like, you know, do what you can, you know, and then let's do what you can where you can. Yeah. What about you? For me, I would say, um, I don't know, dishonesty is a big thing. Like, I'm big on honesty. So when people aren't being real about a situation, that's It really aggravates me, for real. Um, and also, uh, selfishness is another big thing. Who are you talking about? No one in particular. She asked me what makes me mad. It's not aimed at nobody. Nah, nah, nah, it's just, um, yeah, it's just things that I would say because, because I, I like, I like to look out for people, you know, as much as I can. So when And I feel like if I'm giving you that, like if I'm not getting that back, I can't fuck with you.
Right. Okay. For you? Big brother? What pisses you off deep?
I would say back in the day, I'm pretty chill and reserved now, but I used to be very mad, angry teen back in the day. And that's because I would see things that's going on like with the industry, like with Bad Boy and all these things at the time that they necessarily necessarily didn't see it. And I was the older brother, and I'm sitting there trying to explain to them, and they didn't necessarily get it, like, you know what I mean? So I, I would see these things, and it would— that would be very frustrating for me, being an older brother, seeing things that to me I have to literally wait a year or two for them to catch up to see it, you know what I mean? So that— other than that, that was, that was frustrating for me. But, um, I don't really get it. You were frustrated from, like, basically not being heard. Yeah. And just, and just your point of view wasn't being like, yeah, respected or actually— right, right. And it was just a weird time for me being a teenager going through like the business of it with Bad Boy and all that.
So did you feel like you were like a, you were like a dad to your brothers or something?
You were expected to, to lead them in that way for like not so much dad because, you know, we had my mom, we had Jim, so it's like I didn't really have to play that role. And honestly, I was wild. I was wild. So he was— I was wild. How wild? Pretty Ricky wild. He's always the last one downstairs. Now I'm the first. He would make us— No, he's not. You are literally the last one walking in the thing today, bro. I literally just ran. He would always be He'd always bring like a hockey bag full of clothes everywhere we went.
Even if it was like a day job or something. He gotta have a million outfits. Oh my God.
It took him forever to look. He always made us late back in the day. Like, that's what he did. Making us late forever. All right.
Okay. Okay.
I get it. All right. All right. All right now. But yeah. You ready for this one? I'll say I'm in a much better place now. You going crazy right now.
Yeah, he said, he said he the most laid-back one. Now this is strong. Now I'm sipping it. This Kendall Jenner's tequila. Oh really?
I'm more so like a Mi Familia. Yeah, you ever heard of that?
No, I've heard of it. I haven't.
It's good. It's real agave. Yeah, so like it teases different. Like, you can drink it and you won't even be in a mess.
Okay, I'm gonna have to try it. I'm trying. I don't know about Kendall Jenner's, but hey. Now let me get in your little love life. There we go. Are you in relationships? Not right now.
I've been single for— I am married and two kids.
Married and two kids? Where your ring at?
This is this right here. It—
what? I don't see. I need my glasses.
Tattoo. The tattoo. That's small. But my wife, she, she got the— she got all— she got hers. Yeah, she got a good ring and Okay, yeah, that's a good question though. Why ain't you got a ring on? Yeah, you look single. Yeah, I'm a wife.
Hell no. Let me say this, actually, hold on.
What are you gonna do?
Your wife gonna call me like, thank you, girl. My email be like, thank you, girl.
You need to put on a damn ring. Oh, you can even get one of them workout rings. Y'all gotta have a conversation.
You know them black rubber rings? They look real nice. You can get one of them too.
It's like $30. No, that's crazy that you actually pointed that out. I never noticed that. Get a $30 rubber ring, man. I'm sorry. No one said that. Everything has to be a certain caliber. So you have kids? Do you have kids? No.
Okay. How you dodge that bullet?
What the hell? I'm very picky. I've always been like, I want like, um, my kid with one woman.
So you don't want your baby mama sitting on my show, right?
She goes, she goes, selling out. And guess what? He didn't pay for it. What about you? Are you talking to me right now? Uh, I'm single right now. Okay. But I do have a child.
Yes. How old? 5. You're a baby daddy?
Yes, he's like a clone. I love him. Oh man, he's amazing. I mean, even— well, I mean, you know, yeah, yeah, he has two daughters. He has two daughters. They're beautiful.
Everything you did on the tour, huh?
I didn't do nothing on tour.
You got two girls.
I didn't even get to do nothing on tour. Part of me wants to go back.
What are you— okay, since both of you guys are to say before I get to you guys. What are you looking for in a partner?
Um, I'm looking for a woman who can understand me and my journey. That's what I'm looking for. I'm not looking for a chick who's trying to meet me at the finish line. You gotta meet me in the middle.
So you don't want no high-value woman?
I don't want a woman who's there just trying to profit or benefit. I want a real, real woman. Yeah, who loves me first. And then respects the stuff that I do second. What's your type? A big booty. That's your problem. Big booty.
You know, when they got a big booty, they ain't got to do nothing else.
But the booty does do something. It does.
I have to sit up, I have to get the chance without this.
It's not just that. That, but it looks like— I like your teeth. Yeah, booty and teeth. Booty and a nice smile.
Okay. And what does your wife look like? I've never seen her, so I don't know.
She's, uh, what? I'm just joking. Whoa, whoa, whoa. It's turn. Hold on. Look, I'm just joking. I'm just joking. She's black, white, and Thai. Okay. So it's like a super Asian looking, you know. Okay. Super. But don't just— I don't— yeah, we love the other race. I love all females. Okay, so, but, um, yeah, I've been with her for a while, for almost 15 years now. Oh wow. Yeah, you met while we were doing B5. So yeah, see, like, my background is different, and what my, uh, what happened to me as a kid made me like kind of like made my, my decisions as a young, you know, Young Buck. I was really heavily religious, you know, and I was like, man, I wanted to be a wife because I didn't have this background because mom was dead, dad was gone. So it's just kind of like, you know, I had— I wanted that validation, stability, apparently internally, you know. So like, I don't go through no midlife crisis.
He got, he got full of Darnell Jones.
50 years old, started trying to get like the newest, youngest, hottest, you know, for no reason.
Like, okay, it don't even fit you. So you with your wife? You married? You're gonna be married forever?
Yeah, that's what I plan on. I plan on that because I don't want to jump around. I'm one and done. Like, yeah, I'm not doing it. His wife, I'm not getting married again. She's cool. Desiree's been here from the beginning. Like, she's seen it all. She's not a stage wife. Like, she's like She plays— she knows exactly her role, and like, she's a joy to be around. I've known her since I was 15 and a half or 16.
Dang, so you haven't been with any other women but your wife?
Uh, no, that's not true. I mean, we weren't dating. We weren't dating at first. He tried to get— he tried to make sure y'all was getting it in. I know, I know. We're on careful now. Trust me, I'm having her all on the show. But like, no, we were all like, it was like, she was my friend. Is that A1? Tequila. She was your friend? She was my friend. Okay. We weren't it. She had a person.
I was able to grow up with her. Okay, and y'all came together.
Yeah, we came together. Okay. Yeah. Moving on to good friends. Yeah. I'm busy. She honed in on you so hard. But he brought out the me as well. Good job.
Look, he brought that back and sat back.
He was like, oh my God, I was just as entertained as you were watching that.
He had to get it. He was like, oh, she got me.
So many vacations and stuff after this. Man, this girl, she spoiled. I do so much for her. And he has a beautiful family. His two daughters. Beautiful. What are their ages? I got a 10-year-old. 10? And a 3-year-old. She just turned 3 May 2nd. You really a daddy. So my 10-year-old, she'll be 11 in June 17th, so next month.
Okay, okay. And what about you? What you, what you looking for? Uh, I'm looking for a partner.
Okay. I'm looking for someone who understands I'm a dad and actually has that nurturing nature, cuz that's going to be a a big part. Um, but honestly, when I look at the dating scene, um, it's kind of concerning because we've been going through like this gender war.
Have you noticed? Yeah, people ain't gotta say who they are.
It's like we don't understand the boundaries no more, and it's just been really fucking up culture in my opinion. But, um, I do believe in finding the woman that represents like those feminine qualities I want to hold and represent those masculine qualities and bring that together. So really, of course I want somebody beautiful and with a great heart, but, um, it's simple. That's one of the good parts. What's your preference though, as far as like women? Like, what you like, the way they look? I mean, the person— the person I'm interested in is Brazilian, so— which I'm trying to get us a Black— it's my big brother. No, I mean, yeah, this is ongoing. Give me else. Listen, this dude ain't date a black woman. He ain't date at all. We like all women. We don't discriminate. It's not like, as light-skinned men, we don't like all women. You out of this conversation.
You like your wife.
That's it. Let us talk about My first girlfriend was a Black— was a Black girl. Okay, okay. It was Skylar Townsend, Robert Townsend's daughter. Oh yeah, that's right.
Yeah, she's dope. That's like multi— you think so?
No, no, no, he was, um—
I know, I know.
Robert was really cool, man. He's great. Shout out to Skylar. I haven't talked to you since, but that's cool.
Oh, but if she spun the block, would you spin the block with Skylar? Or she—
so I'ma backtrack that. That's gonna be a path that's gonna give me in a different position. What I'm saying is the person I've been interested is Brazilian, so that's kind of where my mind is. Why Brazilian? Because that's who I'm interested in at the moment. I think he just— she just happens to be Brazilian. I wasn't— I'm not looking for Brazil. I'm not looking for nothing. But you just want to make sure she knows when she watches this interview, I'm Brazilian. Currently talking to a Brazilian until, you know, That's— yeah, until the if or when or whatever. But my husband jealous, he's like, but what I'm really trying to say is the looks really don't matter. It's really about the character and how that fits into my life.
That's cool. What about you?
I mean, I'm kind of the same way. I'm more so based on personality, uh, when it comes down to looks and stuff like that. Like, I don't care about race, you know. I've dated Updated everyone. Every, every, he said every main culture at this point. Yeah, um, so for me it's all about personality. Uh, I'm kind of with Patrick on the booty thing, but not always on the booty. Like, she gotta have a whole lot of ass if she got some up top, you know what I mean? She gotta have one or the other.
She gotta have ass.
Right. But for me, it's more so on like, it's a friendship thing, you know? I'm looking for somebody— because Brian was talking about the culture, the gender war thing, and I kind of understand him on that. But he's like an energy guy too. I'm big on energy. Like, if I feel like you're my— like, we can be actual friends, like for real, for real, then like that's the person I'm going to go for. Because I feel like if you're gonna spend your partner with some, like, you know, the rest of your life with your partner, they got to be your best friend. So yeah, if you don't have that part locked down, it's like, it's around. Yeah, I know we've dated— I know I've dated girls where like they just— it's like you realize they're trying to get an opportunity off of you, you know what I mean? It's like, girl, I already do this music stuff. Please don't come in here trying to capitalize, get one off my back, because I'm gonna see that shit a mile away. And So many exes have done that, so it's easy to spot out at this point. So it's just like, yeah.
Dustin? Yeah, your turn. What's your type? Uh, we know big booty.
I've dated all kinds of girls, honestly. Are you single now? No, I'm not.
Oh, he didn't sound very excited.
Just like, no, I'm not. What you want to know? She asked the question. She's great. My girlfriend's great. Um, I don't know if you know that I have a trans girlfriend. I didn't know that. Her name is Dee Smith. She was on Love and Hip Hop, but she's trans. Okay. She moved into, uh, like film, and she's a director now. So she's got a, uh— oh, so she working?
She's not here being—
oh yeah, well, if I'm gonna be a trans woman, she's gonna be the flyest trans trans women, you know what I mean?
Like, you know what's so funny? You're bringing my mind back. Yeah, you were the first to do a pro— I don't know if it was a promo video, but it was like a video coming out to state like, hey, I'm going to state for the record that I think a lot— because I'll be— let me tell you something, I get into it with the trans women a lot because I pick at them. I'm like, y'all always talking shit about women, and I'm like, tell that motherfucker to take you to Applebee's. And then you make a video stating like, look, I'm in a whole relationship with a trans woman and you wanted to come out and just tell the world that, like, you, you were proud of it.
Yeah, I don't believe in people like being hiding or this or that. Like, if honestly I'm not into trans women, I love women originally. Like, all my girlfriends have been girls, you know, I mean, women. But with this, the situation with these girls now, because they're gonna start— well, she's a, she's a trans woman. So, so, no, we're like, I guess I'll just with women, right? Real women. So with the— you have women, then you got trans women, right? You know what I mean? So just for that record. But, um, with her, um, like I said, I've dated all kind of other girls. And where we get— one thing about me, I like peace. I like peace, and I like being able to be friends with my partner. And, you know, I've had models and all the baddest bitches and all that stuff, but arguments and all this stuff come around, you know what I mean, rise up. So Just to keep it simple and short, we have a great, great, um, energy and connection with us. And it's not even so much— people might think it's so sexual. It's not even so much sexual, it's more so just like, uh, spiritual, you know what I mean? And like, we get along so well, like we're like best friends. So we play and stuff like that. So, you know, that's, that's where I'm at with it. Do I love women? Hell yeah, I love women. If I was to ever— God forbid, I'm not gonna say this, but if we was to ever break up, would I go to another trans? I probably wouldn't. I would get another girl. That person just— yeah, so I say that to say, I say all that to say she's very special because of that. Because, you know what I mean, I wouldn't do that again. But with her, it was— it just worked. It ended up the way it was because I met her doing, um, I was doing music for my solo album. She was producing for Wayne, or she did records for Wayne and stuff at the time. But I met her and we just really clicked. I didn't know she was trans at the first time, you know what I mean?
So you fell for her before you knew?
Yeah, yeah, you know what I mean? Yeah, so I didn't even know at first.
You didn't get angry, you didn't question your sexuality, you didn't go through those emotions?
No, I didn't go through none of those. All right, yeah, I didn't have none of that because I feel like I'm, I'm a straight, I'm a straight guy. And this, I know there's this whole thing going out there where 'Well, if you didn't trans and you gay and all this stuff,' but I don't know, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's fickle. It's weird with that, that conversation. But I, as far as me personally, I love women. My girlfriend just happens to be a trans woman, you know what I mean? And it is what it is. It is what it is.
Because when I said I couldn't remember, because I remember you were sitting in a suit, you know, you had the chest.
Oh, you had the roses.
He was like, the camera was panning. Yeah, he was like, I want to tell the world.
Yeah, I'm in love. So yeah, the thing is about that, so many people after Dustin copied him— not copy, but came out. Yeah. And like, even with Chance the Rapper's brother, you know, I saw that as, oh yeah, he's saying— so you kind of made it— oh, you kind of— you kind of made it okay for other people. Okay, you made like a comfortable space for others. And that's what I wanted On top of that, if that's what it did, great. But on top of that, I spoke on that and did that video because, uh, the video that she— the— she did a documentary called Kokomo City that she directed, produced, and all that stuff. And in the, uh, documentary, one of the protagonists, her name was Coco the Doll, she was in Atlanta, she was a trans— uh, transgender sex worker, but she got killed, you know what I mean, after, like, during the filming and stuff like and so it just really put a light in my head, you know what I mean? Like, let me say something about this because since my girlfriend is trans, like, because I didn't want people just going around killing trans people, you know what I mean? So it was kind of— I just wanted to make it known that I care and I, and I just wanted to put up— and I support the community.
My team tried to hit you after that. I don't know what happened, but, um, I don't know if we got lost communication or whatever, who I was talking to. But yeah, I think that was pretty dope because I was getting a lot of backlash the trans community around that time.
Well, you would love Dee because— okay, yeah, you would love her, her state of mind, because we talk a lot and she's not, she's not the messy— because you got some of them that are very messy, and then you got some of those trans girls that are like, oh, well, we're more women than you and all that.
Oh my God, I'm like, please.
Yeah, exactly. You didn't call me she, you called me they. So to your point, so to your point, and all women I definitely stand with women on that where they feel like that, you know what I mean? So, but she, and she stands on that as well. So she's like, we're just different. You have your women, then we're just trans women.
You know, it is different. Have you guys had any trans experiences before?
No, I don't think so. I don't, I haven't.
Okay. Any men experiences? I have to ask you.
He said we live in a world where things are different. No, we don't like no guy. We like women. Scooby-Doo. No, we have no—
just ask. Yeah, I got— clear the record. Yeah, clear it. Okay.
Yeah, I mean, no, I'm glad you asked it though. I'm so glad you asked. Oh really?
See, people be scared to be asking.
I'm cool having a combo for sure.
You know, I think that's dope though, like how you guys— okay, last question. Okay, have you guys ever gotten into any bad fights, like physical fights? Yeah, yeah, between each other?
Oh, oh yeah, we're brothers. Yeah, of course we are. We throw hands.
Really? Yeah, like that's how y'all work it out?
No, it's rare, it's rare, it's rare. It has to be something that's like over the top in order for us to get to that level. Yeah, but it's happening. We're not going full out because— yeah, yeah, yeah, even then, like, why is— we're punching somebody, I'm like, damn, I can't punch this guy too hard because He got to do a video in like 3 days. Yeah, we still need to be— but that's honestly, you know, I can probably count on like one hand how many times.
Yeah, it's not, it's not something that happens. Last question, how do you guys get through dark times?
I'll start with you. Um, how do we get through dark times? We never smoke when you drink.
But I'm talking about like, it's something like so traumatic and you're like, damn, like it's hard. You don't think you could like go on with life.
Like, how do you get over that? I haven't really had too many of those moments, to be honest, because I think it's for me, and I probably speak for the rest of the guys, is mentally we're very— I think we're very strong. Okay. Yeah, that, that. But also like, we have a, we have a really good support system. I was about to say that, like our family at home, like we know if If anything comes down to like, if we're tapped and we just need whatever, like our family at home will definitely like make sure that we're okay. They'll get it. They'll put us back to where we need to be. Because there has been some dark times for real. I can say that personally. Yeah, for sure. Like just dealing with just this crazy roller coaster, you know, of our careers and the industry. They're gonna keep it light, but there, there have been some really, really dark times, at least for me. And I don't think I would have been able to like really pull out of like some of this, you know, like, because sometimes you get so lost in your mental, mental games, you know what I mean? But, but having like 4 other guys plus my mom plus my aunties who like have been there and understand, you know, if I didn't have them to like just talk to or have them to just like, bro, you know, just keep working and keep pushing. Like, I feel like to me, that's, that's, that's how I always got through it. Yeah, it was always them or my mother, you know what I mean, who would like help me through that. I would say turn the shit into fertilizer. You know, you can take your past, you can take all the lessons from it, and you can call it a failure, or you can turn it into a lesson and utilize it for your future.
Yeah.
And I would say, um, connection to a spirit source, always, because that's a very personal journey that's going to look different for every individual. It actually ends up opening your talents and everything about yourself. But sometimes you want something now and you need someone to, you know, like, that's great, you know what I mean? But sometimes, like, you just need to talk to somebody and let them know, like, bro, it's okay. Like, you know, it's not all bad. Yeah, yeah. The other side of the coin, bro, like I think about that. And honestly, I feel for like all the other like Bad Boy artists that were, that were on the label. Not even just Bad Boy, bro, because there's not even artists, especially, no, but especially, I mean, I think TLC, they weren't a part of Bad Boy, but look at that. Well, yeah, so they would be included in that. What's this one boy that was on, that was part of the band? Oh, Freddie. Freddie, the one that was like from New Orleans, the guy, right? One that was quiet. Oh yeah, I saw his— did you see his video? And honestly, I feel, I feel everything he said. I feel 100% everything he said. For him, I feel for Black Rob. When Black Rob was begging when he was dying, I was like, man, who's the guy who's viral right now? Is it Orlando Brown? Yeah, we did shows with him. Yeah. And I seen him in his prime. Yeah, I seen him in his prime. And now I'm watching what's happening.
But he really crazy like that though. Like, I, I, yeah, I know Orlando.
Like, he really We didn't know, we didn't know, but we didn't know that version. Yeah, he did something at a show that kind of like gave us a little— yeah, give it a little— yeah, we're doing a show and like for some reason, I don't know why, the radio station had like— so the fans were at the bottom of like this, yeah, the stage was like up on like this heels. Like, there was literally like— you're like looking down, like, like 20 feet down are the fans. That's really weird. Like, you know, you're close to the fans. Yeah, that's crazy. Don't know why, but like, he took his belt. Like, tell him what type of— back in the day, like, you remember back in the day, the big belt buckle, like, your name screening across it? And it was like, he took it off and just threw it in the crowd for a fan to catch. But if he— you know what I mean? Like, we were like, that's kind of nuts, but it's awesome.
Yeah, so besides that, you know, yeah, yeah, I did an interview with him and he was trying to tell me that, oh, like I was Oprah or something like that, or I was ready for some— I was like, what the—
yeah, we're— yeah, yeah. I was just like, okay, yeah, I don't know nothing about that. That's, yeah, that's beyond me.
So you guys are almost sold out for your New York City show.
Yes, June 27th. Yeah, June 27th in New York at— what's the name of the venue? Cheers to the New York show! July 27th, uh, at the Harbor in New York City. Yes, it's a B5 experience, AKA crazy ultimate show that we're gonna do. Full catalog, full catalog. And, um, yeah, it's— we got meet and greets, we got VIPs, we got, uh— but it's bigger than just like the show. This is like, you know, what, what makes this one so special is that we got our— we got a whole new team behind us now. And it— and I, I don't know if people have been watching on the B5 Instagram and things like that. But if you watch it, you can clearly see like it's really moving fast. Yeah, so we got a lot of great things going on, not just the— not just the show. We got— this is like the kickoff. Yeah, yeah, it's a kickoff. So we're very excited about it. And, um, the response from the fans have been great, you know what I mean? Yeah, they all give us a lot of, um, energy to keep, you know, going. Yeah, so we love you guys for that as well.
So y'all ain't gonna say nothing from your new—
