A guest describes being adopted by a Mennonite community as a Black child and forced to work from sunrise to sunset while receiving racial slurs. The community collected government checks for adopted children while exploiting their labor and taught white peers anti-Black attitudes that isolated the guest at school.
Welcome to the Wise Thelma Mocha Queen. You said you were adopted by Mennonites. According to you, you were like a child slave for the Mennonites. Is that correct?
A lot of the time, yes, I was adopted by them. It's just like everybody, you'll have some nice ones, some good ones, some bad ones. Unfortunately, in what I went through, it was actually probably one of the worst. I didn't even know that they adopt kids. And they love to adopt Black kids especially. I am wearing this dress today because this is a type of clothing they had me wear with the Mennonites. I just want to raise awareness of how they treat Black adopted kids.
You said in your initial write-in that they would make the Black kids be slaves. Tell me about that.
They collected checks from the government for us. They got paid, but we did a lot of their work from sunup to sundown. A lot— I got called the N-word a lot of times. Basically no friends at school because all the little white girls were taught that Black is bad.
