Three people claim Tyler Perry has hidden his homosexuality behind a public Christian image, describing a restaurant encounter where Perry preached about God while surrounded by openly gay associates. They argue Perry exemplifies a pattern of Black Christian men concealing their sexuality.
What made you start calling Tyler Perry out?
He had an opportunity to really change the view of Black gay men. Tyler Perry has been gay since he popped out of his mama's coochie. So what is the confusion here?
When you were around Tyler, everybody was— y'all was just gay.
He never changed. He's still a gay man now. When Tyler Perry and I sat at that restaurant at 10th and 14th Street, and he went on about God and Jesus, and Jesus did this, and God did this, and God and this, I'm sitting across from him thinking, OK. I don't want nobody to know I'm gay. You don't want nobody to know you gay. But here we are at this restaurant. Out full of gay people with this big table full of gay— what is going on here in your head? How many Christian Black men do you deal— because I deal with them all the time. The ones that claim they Christian?
The ones that are out of the closet to me, but they're usually just gay.
Tyler's walking down that same path that he's seen since he was a child. Have we as Black Americans— are we ready to accept a Black gay entertainer who's out and proud? Yes. Name me one then.
