Darrell Vesterfelt reflects on being fired from the company he started and the grief that followed. He explores what it means to mourn the person you were before parenthood changed everything.
I missed deadlines. Clients were pissed off at me. My partners were pissed off at me. At home, I was stressed out and not being a present dad and partner. And then I'm grieving really heavily. And I was asked to leave the company that I started fired, basically, and asked to leave the company that I started just so that those partners could save face with the clients that I had completely made huge mistakes on. And in the moment, it felt like these were potential, like, large, influential clients. They were large, influential partners and investors. And I had just maybe ruined my career. And it's kind of how I felt in the moment. And I was just very, very scared. And it was about a six month, very, very dark period of my life where I was having a hard time.
