Nir Eyal explains why reactive work and reflective work require different conditions. Reflective work, the kind that drives strategy and creativity, needs distraction-free time. Most people never get it.
Most people all day long when they're at work, they react, react to emails, react to phone calls, react to meetings, as opposed to, you have to have some time in your day for reflective work. Reflective work is the kind of work that can only be done without distraction. Creative work, planning, thinking, strategizing has to be done without distraction. Most people have no time to think in their day. They're always reacting. These are what the low performers do. They love being told what to do all day long, which means they're running real fast in the wrong direction. As opposed to high performers. They make at least sometime in the day in the schedule, and they keep it sacred to do this reflective work.
