Jess Ekstrom's uncle was Bernie Madoff. She shares how her family's financial devastation shaped her belief that better opportunities exist, and what she learned from living through one of history's biggest fraud schemes.
I had an experience of telling a story on stage that I actively, my whole life tried not to tell. And it's about my family, you know, losing all of our money to Bernie Madoff when we, when I was in high school. And then also Bernie Madoff is my uncle, so we are related to him. And it was like this skeleton in my closet that was like, no one can find out about this. I just want to run as far and as fast away from this experience as possible. But then when I started writing, chasing the bright side and like, truly wanting to tell the story of like, how did I start to develop this muscle of believing in better and pursuing it? It started with Bernie. And it started watching my parents, you know, be entrepreneurs and feel like they did everything right and line up for, you know, financial graduation of retirement and then only to realize that they're back in kindergarten again and watching my 80 year old grandparents be retired and start their own cab driving company because they needed to make money again.
