Terry Rice explains why copying someone else's style backfires. Sam J. taught him that pretending to be someone else might work short-term, but authentic success comes from being yourself.
Here's a surprising reason why you should never copy someone else's style. And I learned this from Sam J. She's a writer on snl. She has a TV show on hbo. And I heard her talking about the early days of her career and how she intentionally never copied anyone else's style. She was influenced, but never copied. And here's why. She said, I wasn't afraid about it not working. I was afraid about it working and me becoming very successful by pretending to be someone I wasn't. That would be exhausting, having to show up as that person every day when that wasn't really me. And that really stuck out to me because she feared the consequences of success and sustaining this, this fakeness more than she feared failure. So what does this mean to you? Just be real. And I know that sounds trite, but you have to be the best version of yourself you can be. Share your experience, your personality, your worldview. Be authentic. And yes, it may take longer to grow, but it's much more sustainable and you'll be much more fulfilled as.
