Submodalities Belief Change Script
This script provides a step‑by‑step NLP exercise for changing limiting beliefs using submodalities. The practitioner first elicits a current limiting belief and its visual submodalities, then identifies an old belief that is no longer true and its submodalities (ensuring a different location). The submodalities of the limiting belief are then swapped with those of the old belief, and the client is tested on the new perception of the old belief. Next, the practitioner anchors a universally true belief (e.g., the sun will rise) and elicits its submodalities, then defines a desired new belief opposite the original limiting belief, elicits its submodalities, and transfers the submodalities of the universal truth onto the desired belief. A final test confirms the new belief and asks the client why they now hold it. The script references a Submodalities Checklist (page 29) for precision.
Topics
Eliciting the Limiting Belief and Its Submodalities
Prompting the client to name a limiting belief and visualizing its picture to capture submodalities (size, location, brightness, etc.).
Identifying a Past Belief No Longer True and Its Submodalities
Guiding the client to recall a belief that was true in the past (e.g., being a smoker) and to visualize its picture, emphasizing a different location from the limiting belief.
Swapping Submodalities from Past Belief to Limiting Belief
Instruction to change the submodalities of the limiting belief to match those of the identified past belief, effecting a perceptual shift.
Testing the Updated Perception of the Old Belief
A quick check (“Now, what do you think about that old belief?”) to assess whether the submodalities change has altered the client’s experience.
Anchoring to an Absolutely True Belief and Its Submodalities
Eliciting a universally accepted belief (e.g., the sun will rise) and its visual submodalities to serve as a stable anchor.
Formulating the Desired New Belief Opposite the Limiting Belief
Prompting the client to state the belief they wish to adopt, opposite to the original limiting belief, and to visualize its picture.
Transferring Submodalities from Universal Truth to Desired Belief
Changing the submodalities of the desired belief to match those of the absolutely true belief, reinforcing its credibility.
Final Confirmation and Rationale for the New Belief
Testing the client’s new belief (“Now, what do you believe? Why do you believe you have this new belief?”) to solidify the change.
