The Art of Crypto narrates the case of Larry Dean Harmon, a 37‑year‑old Ohio resident who operated the Helix crypto‑mixing service. Helix was designed to obscure the origin of Bitcoin by mixing transactions, making tracing difficult. Authorities allege that Helix facilitated the laundering of over $300 million in Bitcoin for criminal enterprises involved in drug trafficking, identity theft, and other illegal activities. The IRS investigated and shut down Helix in 2017, and Harmon was arrested in 2019 for conducting unlicensed Bitcoin transactions. His trial, initially set for September 2020, was postponed due to the COVID‑19 pandemic and has not been rescheduled.
